Hardpoints, tonnage, size.
It has nothing really going for it. Mechs 15 tons lighter have more equipment+pod space, while moving the same speed. Of course, those aren't in the game yet.

Why is that? Use a DoomCrow instead. 10 tons heavier, so much more effective.
It will leave the smouldering corpse of your Ice Fridge, wherever it may fall.
Wave III should be expected June-ish, I imagine. It will have the half decent fast Clam movers, rather than the Terribad ones.

...The Arctic Cheetah? A mech with 2 less tons of podspace and 2.5 tons less armor for the same speed?
It would NEED the 6 energy variant to be considered competitive.

It does have 6 E hardpoints; or 7 if you forgo the Jesus Box.
It moves 142 with 6 JJs (3 tons) while carrying 8 tons of pod space.
It would also be smaller. Outright better.

Here's what i think happened regarding wave II mechs: (and the ones after that)

- - PGI chose the worst possible clan mechs with least amount of feedback (except the HBR)
- - Maddog and KGC were introduced to add incentive (so that people buy the top package...gargoyle had little to do with incentives)
- - better clan mechs could be saved for another package where they can be incentives themselves.
- - KGC oriented sales numbers surprised PGI so much that they introduced another pack in a very short order (for people that could not afford 120$).
- - according to community demand, urbie pack was introduced. Urbie itself has little sales incentive for non-die hard fans. Therefore, loyalty rewards are re-introduced to create more sales from people who could not afford 80$ or 120$ by giving them high incentives on the urbie packs.

You can bet your life... we are.... we are.!
i'm dying to have the shadowcat... or the viper.
(^see... that is when you know what PGI marketing dept had in mind... have fans grab every piece of garbage for the maddog and keep them thirsty for the actual clan goodies)

It's actually a decent mech, but with an unfortunately small number of options. It's not tough enough to go toe-to-toe with IS lights like the firestarter or jenner, and even a quirked raven will eat your lunch.
The stuck XL360+2DHS results in too little tonnage to do something as mundane as 2xLPL. You only have 9 tons to work with at full armor, with maybe another half ton if you start stripping the poor thing down. Don't even dream of mounting ballistics; too little tonnage.
Where it shines is 2xERLL+1DHS. It's kind of like a longer range version of the 2xERLL range, but without ECM. It is seen fairly often in CW, and isn't completely worthless in solo/group queue. I put it at marginally better than the gargoyle, and solidly better than the Mist Lynx. (Poor thing needs massive energy buffs or better hardpoints)
The new chassis, the IFR-D, adds a right arm with an additional energy hardpoint, and should help greatly with ERML builds as well. 5xERML will be a nice build when the D becomes available for c-bills in April. For now, you're stuck with only a maximum of 4 energy hardpoints. It'll be kind of like a hard hitting, silly looking Cicada.
So if you want some speed with your clans, the Ferret is the only game in town. (currently)

...
I think gargoyle is considerably better than the ferret... and the lynx is better than the ferret by far (i think).
I tend to sacrifice armor in my ferret builds... i has speed. so i manage to get 10 tons out of it. been practicing with different builds. found that i have more luck using 3xMPL+ASRM6 (prime) or 4xMPL+2DHS (others)... but that is just me.
ferret is just for when you want to have fun (in non-CW matches). It also performs good in CW. it can stay among the main battle group in initial push and break from the main group and go for a gen when conflict starts (its a lot of fun... IS guys don't expect that)
