Hey guys, I was wondering what a good Mid/Long Range Fire support Mech was, iddeally in the Medium/Heavy range, but I have no qualms leaving that happy zone if that's what necessary.

I don't want to fall into a sniper Archtype, but I don't necessarily want to be a 'brawler' either, something a little farther back from that. Any thoughts are appreciated. ^^

I'll mention I -really- like lazers even though I'm terrible at managing Heat (and keeping them centered on my target...), I'd like to think I'm better at managing Heat than managing Ammo. @.@

All advice appreciated, and thanks in advance. <3

Catapults are a good heavy, but if you look at assaults as well, pretty much any of the Stalkers are good fire support. Battlemaster 1S is a good one.

I should also add I despise using missiles, which isn't to say I won't use them, but they're not exactly my forte. <.<

Dragon 1N would come to mind. Fast, dual AC5s. Not the best hitboxes mind you

How good is the Stalker 4N? It looks like it has really good Large Lazers...

I also am enjoying using PPCs in particular.

Trebuchet 7K is a excellent midrange sniper,XL280,endo+ferro,2PPC:s and a AC5+2.5 tons of ammo,11 DHS,286 armor

Dragon 1N is really potent midrange fire support

And you cant go wrong with Jägermechs in that role.

Stalker 4N is a very good LLas 'Mech, but if you don't like missiles, you will likely not master it due to the other 'Mechs being largely Missile focused. Any of them is a great support 'Mech though and you might enjoy them regardless.

Get a Hunchback 4J. The cooldown time on the LRM10s make them fire as fast as LRM5s. It's a medium, so it's quick with a good engine, and if you mount a TAG laser in the head, you can stay really mobile while getting your own locks (and locks for your team) while staying low and avoiding return fire. I'm considering getting a second to add to my CW drop deck.

Okay, realing it in, what's some good PPC Mechs? I really enjoy the freedom PPCs seem to give, good punch, range, and decent (not great) fire rate, plus you don't have to 'track'like you do with Lazers. (Still really liking the look of Stalker 4n Though, I'm learning missiles, slowly.)

Jagermechs, preferably S or DD
Good PPC mechs are TDR-9s

Vindicators and Griffins after the 2nd Quirk pass have PPC quirks, Jump Jets and high engine Caps among the Mediums. They are flexible and the GRF 1N also has avery useful shield arm for using STD engines. The PPC(s) combined with LRMs give you a good long range mix-up as a supporter.

Good PPC Mechs that you could look into are the Thunderbolt-9S, as well as most of the Vindicatiors (Although the Vindies aren't all that good. I know, it makes me sad too.). Incedentially, the Thunderbolts are also really good laser mechs in general, with quirks that support weapon systems that usually have a ~500 meter range. From what you say, the Thunderbolt sounds like a great chassis for you.

As a side note, I love you for hating LRMs.

Yeah, I went ahead and got the thunderbolt, I'm now saving money to get it some PPCs proper instead of flamers and the medium lasers... dunno what to do with all the ballistic hardpoints but I'll figure out something, maybe see about AC5s or... iunno. Something. XP I'll muscle my way through it all the same once I get some more starter money under my belt.

EDIT: In response to Trolz below me (because I can't make a new post do to new player limit.) While yes, I don'y need every hardslot filled, I'm not gonna make ANY use of the flamethrowers the thing comes with by default, unless your referring to the Machineguns... which I could put away for more armor and heatsinks and stuff...

... oh.

I got the 9S of Thunderbolt.

Just gonna say this now. Just because I mech has open hardpoints does not mean you need to fill them.

Also, which chassis did you buy?

Warhawk Prime, with left and right groups set to chain fire, PPCs all day.

Nova is a mech I'm curious to try, but scared too as well because it seems like it's much more built for mid/close rather than mid/far.

Incidently, I'm gonna try the Large Pulse thunderbolt variant next. :U

Jagermechs are ideal candidates, but the mounts in the arms are ballistics. One of them has 4 missile hardpoints in the arms but also 2 ballistics so you can still do that. They use energy hardpoints in the torsos for backup weapons, but they are not high mounted so not great for using over hill. The Hero has an energy hardpoint in each arm and favors PPCs, but also has ballistic hardpoints so really you can use a pair of some ballistic across all Jagermechs. I know it's not popular, but I've had good success with AC10s (pre-quirk) in those mechs. It's mid range, has more punch than AC5s (though most people would probably say AC5s are better overall--you can decide that for yourself), low heat. I feel like AC10s draw less attention or maybe it's just a skewed perception of mine. UAC5s would be another good choice for more burst damage capability.
