I have had a little bit of time today to play with the bios and OC a little bit more. I am sitting at 4.8 Ghz at 1.349 volts and she is looking to be stable. I have ran the Intel tweak software, stressed tested it, and ran benchmarks with it at 4.8. I couldn't get it to run stable at anything lower then the 1.349 volts, temps floated from 41C-81C while stressing it and benchmarking with Intel's software.

From what I understand, my chip is in the top 10-20% for OC ability, given the volts I have had to give it to hit 4.8Ghz. I haven't tried higher yet, I wanted to get 4.9 with this chip, I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to the bios, and I thinks that gigabyte mother boards have some specific issues that require you to dial back some things because the boards ramp up certain settings and volts when under load from applications running. Time to jump into some MWO, and see what this puppy can do! :D

Ok... so in conclusion the New Intel rig seems to be running a bit smoother then the FX-8350 at 1440P. How much so its to soon to really tell but here are the specs of my old FX-8350 system and the in game settings.

System specs: FX-8350 @ 4.8 ghz

ATI XFX DD 7970 3gb O.C @ 1075 gpu, 1475 Memory

Gigabyte 990fxa-UD3 rev. 2

Samsung 500 gb SSD

Kingston Hyper 8 gb @ 1600hz

New BenQ BL3200PT @1440P

Running Windows 7 64 bit, 64 bit client in MWO

No changes or mods to my Config files in this game

In game settings are now the same with I74790K build with the new BenQ 1440P 32" (just noticed that they are just a bit different from the FX-8350 in game settings.) Gonna change them to the same and run some more fraps benches.

Here are some runs done with my FX-8350 build with the new BenQ 1440P 32" for comparison.

Just got Windows 10 installed and all running smooth and updated. It is stable now, where as before it locked up on me, I think it was the killer NIC drivers that made it unstable. I used the same drivers that I did in Windows 7 to get it up and running turning it into a different ethernet chipset. All is good in Windows 10 and I after doing some tweaking to the OS and the looks of it, I have to say I kinda like Windows 10 ATM.

Just finished up downloading and installing MWO on Windows 10 and getting ready to drop into some games to see if performance is better then Windows 7. I will post some more fraps runs under Windows 7, but as of now looking at the numbers from the Intel rig Vs. the FX rig, obviously the numbers do seem higher for the most part. Mininums are up, Avg. is up, and highs are around the same if not higher. It's looking like for sure the Intel rig is the way to go for playing this game at least, if you don't mind spending the extra cash and are building a new gaming rig. I just also looked on Newegg, and the XFX 290X 4 gb is on sale again and its really hard not to pull the trigger on it. I will have to make a new plexiglass backplate mount for it though, It is around 2" longer and 1" wider than my 7970. Damn you newegg and your sales!!! :D

In matches under Windows 10 I had the 7970 OC to 1075/1500 on the ram, and ended up getting a drop error that took me out of the game with a error message after I died. I bumped down the OC on my 7970 to 1050/1475 on the ram and made it through the entire match, but it hung on the loading screen back into mech lab. I can not access task manager when it does this and had to restart since I couldn't close out of MWO. WTF?

Well, I installed Linux Mint 17.1 64 bit...and grub boot loader, and it has killed my Windows 10 boot loader. I have tried many ways to repair, rewrite, fix the boot loader for my Windows 10 install, but everyone has failed to fix it. Just when I got it tweaked the way I wanted it, looks like a clean install of it is needed once again. :(

Oh well, $hit happens. Good news is that I have the Windows 7 install tweaked the way I want it, and its running great! Temps all look really good and still running stable at 4.8ghz on the I74790K. All in all so far with the fraps bench numbers, I have to say that the Intel rig is throwing out higher numbers for sure over the FX-8350 system. However, this increase in FPS comes at a higher cost over my FX-8350 Amd system, and the real question is, is it worth the added cost to go Intel? Time will tell if it is for me at least, I am still coming to the answer to that question. All I can say is that so far, I am not unhappy with my upgrade choice, however, I wasn't unhappy with my FX-8350 build either. Both systems performed well for me, but the new Intel build does seem to perform just a bit better. I guess the next step is to figure out the graphics card upgrade, and if I am really gonna go full dark side with a Nvidia 980 card.....or just halfarse it with a new AMD card... :P :D

If you're gonna upgrade your CPU and your motherboard won't accommodate the new one, it's definitely better to go Intel for this game. There's really no argument there. Also, considering most people playing are clearly not adept at building custom water cooling loops, not many people will be getting the same performance you were getting out of your AMD chip. That makes a faster Intel chip a no-brainer.

Those numbers are looking pretty good, Bill.

I agree, if you have the cash, and do not want to support AMD with a purchase then in this game, Intel is the way to go, if you have the extra cash to purchase the parts. As for the cooling, the I74790K did not look to impressive on stock cooling, and even with the Zalman wasn't looking to impressive vs. my FX-8350 on Air cooling, stock or with the Zalman. With my custom water cooling loop, it seems to be acceptable in regards to temps vs. the FX-8350.

Keep in mind, I haven't modded my config files yet, and have not installed or used the core parker. As I have said before, I am a noob with that kinda stuff, and will most likely need some help from you guys on it. I really don't want to jack up my files, or mess anything up. I will need your expert tutelage to really be balling with the highest FPS I can get out of this rig. ;)

The numbers are showing to be better then the FX-8350 for sure, game play seems a bit "smoother" also with the I74790K build vs. the FX-8350. Both however was very playable in this game, even at 1440P, this was kinda a not needed upgrade for sure, but the finished wall case was needed, the other desk case I did was kinda "jerry rigged" and I needed the motivation to get a finished case done, so this Intel upgrade was the final push that got it done for me. :D

Nice work!

PS: It would have been great to see some runs with the FX8350 and the FPS optimized MWO for comparation.

As far as I know, the patches for FPS optimization was in place in better then 70% of the numbers that I posted for the FX-8350 rig. You can check the dates of the patch that they addressed the FPS issues, and I think this will confirm that. I am really liking the new build.... but I think some of that has to do with the new wall mount case. I am in love, it still has some work to be done to it, but its very nice.....should of built one a couple of years ago. :D

Btw... I still have a Amd 3+ board, a Asrock, so if I get froggy I can always pick up another FX-8350 CPU and its all good. ;)

I have no mood to play MWO but was curious enough to make some matches and while the minFPS and avgFPS are pretty smooth and a tad better (but the maxFPS Spikes be not as high as in the past) i could set anything to Very High and still have a pretty smooth gameplay.
I went for everything Very High and Effects, Particles, Shadows at High in a 1920x1200 Resolution.
A typical Benchmark now is around 65-35-80 (avg-min-max) compared to an old Benchmark around 60-35-105 with Effects and Shadows at Medium and Particles at Low.
Settings and old Benchmarks of my FX8350: http://mwomercs.com/...ost__p__4044931
PGI did a pretty good work.

PS: Aside of that i can honestly say i hate the direction the game takes now with Quirks putting even more Firepower on the already very much Firepower saturated battlefield - i dont feel i will do many more matches...

Hey Thorqemada....sorry to hear you have lost the desire...I know I am getting to that point some times also with this game. I do love the new map so far, only played it once though.

Here is a bench from my first game tonight, and this is looking really good :-)

I played a tad after the latest patch and my High-FPS went back above >100 FPS.

But yeah...i dabbled around while watching TV, cooking a meal and doing other stuff...sorry to the PUGs i was in...evened the streak of losses somewhat out this morning with some more serious gaming bcs if i play is still have my Goals to end up at least at a 1.0 W/L per Mech and no overall worse W/L Balance than b4.

Need 5 more Wins now...though after 17.000 matches the excitement has really worn off and CW does not play out fun for me...still the little personal "Goals" be left to be desired.

I am not a Mech-Junkie (though i can sit hours in the Mechlab wasting money toying around with the 13 Mechs i own) - new Mechs offer way less motivation to me than good + fun gameplay challenge.

Attractive hgh performance PC you now have Bill congrats! :)

PS: AMD will release Catalyst 15.3 soon - i will leave a notice if the MWO performance is affected.

Just a thought for future boards. ASUS ROG boards have allowed me to build some of the best quality gaming rigs for myself and friend's since making the switch. Nice rig man, and best of luck with that beast! Hope you get the heat issue under wraps :x

Heat issues are no longer a problem since I finished the new wall case and have my custom loop running. ;) And thanks... I am loving it so far. :D

Hey, thanks a lot for the prompt and very nice reply. Common courtesy and respect have become rare around here. I quickly realized after I posted you had the heat issue in the bag. I didn't realize there were 6 more pages of replies, doh! I built my current rig in early '12 and am going to be building my next game rig within a year, Intel and nVid-gfx based surrounding that beast of Intel's Haswell architecture. Regardless -- thank you again and happy hunting!

Addendum: Here's what I went with back then.. Cheers!

Broadwell will be out within the year, and Haswell would be a minor upgrade from that machine. Might want to wait.

Just this morning I decided to change the bios settings so I could take advantage of the speed stepping and energy saver options of the I74790K. So far doesn't seem like I am seeing any real performance hits. I will keep testing while playing in games, bench mark it and keep records of any FPS drops with the new settings.

I still haven't tried to hit 4.9ghz-5ghz yet.... I really want to get that, but I am concerned with bumping the Volts past 1.35 on this chip.
