This is why I record a lot of footage of any online game I enjoy and know won't be around for long, or will change meta/carrot stick up the treadmill to obsolete archaic stuff ala expansion.

That's why they need to get the new player experience right, to grow the player base.

I look at $/hour of entertainment. Those famous "AAA titles" rarely provide more than 15-20 hours for me. MWO has provided thousands (more than it should have, really).

Also...self-fulfilling prophecy here if enough people think like you, Alistair.

I've taken back "AAA titles" beacuse I wasn't happy with the lack of game play hours... I bought, beat, and returned for a full refund the first "Gears of War", all in the same day. I told the guy at EB Games, that an 8 hour campaign is not acceptible for a $65 game.

What PGI should do in the futur is make a sort of Stand-Alone version of MWO with Campaign, and at least Solo mode...

The already mentioned Mass Effect gives around 20 (VERY quick playthrough) to 50 hours per title and can easily be played 3-4 times before you have seen everything. PLUS ME3 multiplayer was fun for thousands of hours as well.

I enjoy MWO and don't expect to be quitting it any time soon. Russ actually tweeted yesterday that Sunday had the highest peak users, ever. Link

The game is also only technically a year and a half old, as the release was October 2013. That doesn't mean much to the people who have been here since 2012, but I guess at least it appears the game is growing it's user base.

PGI bit a big cookie when they decided to go on steam.

Lots of little things that need to be in so they are probably focusing on those things.

gotta do tutorials, add more to CW, finish mech packs, and more before they can get out on steam so I think its okay if a there are a few more problems and fixes are delayed a bit since they are clearly working hard to get stuff done.

I mean we got VOIP and 2 new CW maps coming. Russ talked about new gamemodes for it ect.

Hopefully by the time it dies they have working AI so we can at least continue to create matches with 'bots or something. The client could then be changed to where we could at least play online with our friends or people we know like multiplayer games of yesterday where you just connect with the people you are going to play with.

That way when they turn the servers off the game can fully exist on your computer still and you can play with your friends till the end of time or it stops working with the latest version of windows.

As i understand it, PGI are not allowed to sell or distribute mech likenesses in any media form but the game itself.

That's posters, t-shirts, miniatures etc. all out of the question, due to license restrictions.

For me, the uncertain longevity of the game is a major reason why I hesitate to spend more money. By the time Wave 3 is delivered, the game will almost be 3 years old. You're paying as much for the Gladiator pack as for 2 complete, brand new a-level games with both single player and multiplayer. And while not all those games let you play multiplayer with friends without needing public company-owned servers, you will at least have that single player bit forever. I can play through the Mass Effect trilogy 50 years from now, though I may have trouble finding other people who are still interested in the Mass Effect multiplayer bit. I can still play Mechwarrior 2, I can still play Diablo 2, I can still play Theme Hospital, I can still play Master of Orion, I can still play Little Big Adventure.

With MWO, we're paying to rent mechs. When PGI decides to shut down the MWO servers, the game is over. And your vast mechbay with 200 mechs with custom camo, cockpit items, C-bill bonuses, and modules.... it's gone. You'll have nothing left to show for it, except your screenshots.

That's the stuff that bothers me, right now. I'm uncomfortable with sinking more money into an aging game without owning the rights to play anything at all. Without PGI keeping the game alive, I can't even look at my mechs in the mechbay.

I don't just want to rent the permission to play with PGI's mechs, for hundreds of dollars, untill they decide to pull the plug.

I'd like to own... something.
t
These exact same things are true for lol, wow. Wot, and any other online multiplayer game. If these are your issues, you picked the wrong type of game to play especially since you dont seem to understand how things work. You think youre going to own your mechs? Well you can! Just pull em fro. The game files with meshmixer or the like! Otherwise your worries are unfounded. The game will ladt as long as it does. C9uld be a day, could be 10 yrs+. If you dont want to spend mo ey to enjoy the game, dont, but dont act as though it could be any other way for a game like this.

On the flip side of the coin, how often do you go back and replay a game 10 years later even though you still own it and can play it?

Not often. Only for the best games I've played. And having spent thousands of hours on MWO, I'd have to list it as one of the best games I've played.

I do regularly have a go at the classics. I play through Master of Orion, the X-com games, Theme Hospital, Fallout, Transport Tycon Deluxe. Every year or two, I'll get an urge to play those games, and I'll play it for weeks.

I did play WoW and TOR for quite some time, but after a while I started understanding why I hated certain aspects of traditional MMOs. And once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.

Not to mention Skyrim. Holy crap, look at how much time people are pouring into Skyrim. They spend hundreds of hours decorating their houses, and it's not even an MMO.

Well, removing the Beta tag wasn't much of a release, but let's not go down that path. Very cool that Sunday had the highest peak users ever. Thanks for the info.

Lol, Alistair, you cant really play with friends in this game, unless your idea of playing with friends is being your little 2 or 4 man unit in against 12 man premade getting stomped game after game. Atleast in other shooters you can get in a game with your buddies that dont always end up in 12 man stomps....

PLanetside 2, sure, it has some good players, but your buddy and you can go someplace where its not a massive amazing group of players curb stomping everyone

World of Tanks, while even your 2 man buddy platoon cant always win, when its 0-6 45 seconds into the game, but atleast you can play and make some difference..

MWO, its go in with your buddy, likely against a 6-10 man premade and get wasted game after game.....

I went in with as a 4man CWI unit about a month ago, and we won 1 of like 8 games, and every time, it was DHB, and other various awesome premades that just pretty much wasted us. In a few we were actually winning initially, 3-0, but in the end, we lost.....even when we got like CGBI and other smaller groups of clans on our side, we still got whipped in the end....this game does not reward playing in a small unit.....there is no Q where you can really influence it or have any fun unless your in a 12man....and as long as the MM is like that, I doubt this game will go very far. Not everyone wants to be a 1337MLGnoscopegodmode gamer.....some people just want to come on with ther buddies and play stompy robots and NOT have to face down premades...

Can you do that in CW? nope
Group Q? nope
Solo Q? nope....

and we wonder why the only players in this game are the die hards.....and the playerbase is small and shrinking.

In all seriousness, I could really see this game's PVP side of the house dying entirely upon a good PVE option coming to this game. Then, if its a 4-5 man coop campaign, players will opt to do just that, go in as a 2 man team, maybe with some commandable AI allies to fill in the rest and just play the PVE aspect for years to come....and that will be MWO, jsut like all the rest, a mostly PVE played game with PVP as a side dish......

what really confuses me is if the game is dead or dying, why the **** do all these people who constantly ***** about it stay?

still here on the forums being a warrior defending your opinion like it was given by god himself, if the game is dead or dying, leave. you are not doing anything by staying and saying "gam ded" over and over.

I would really love to see a PVE campaign but I think most people would be disappointed. How many times would the average player play through, 2-3 at most. That's a huge amount of work to maybe give a weeks entertainment. Then it would be complaints about the lame PVE and not enough content and wheres the end game etc. I think they should perfect what they have and make it a very good PVP game first and foremost. That is where everyone spends the real time.

I don't think PGI are big enough to build any large amount of quality PVE stuff.

Yeah Alistair, that is a concern. My other major vice is high fidelity flight sims for DCS. The meat and potatos of that game is in the multiplayer client. But if it ever went under there is still a single player mode and a robust mission editor so it would never die.

I wish MWO had a mission editor. :)

MWO will be alive and well for many years to come, dont worry.
Its a goldmine for PGI as there is a solid, loyal fanbase that doesnt really care about quality as long as they can stomp around in big robots. And they pay big time for new mechs.
For three years, the progress is shockingly low though.

Those times are long gone. Imagine you could play an old game whenever you want and for free if theres a newer one for sale. FFS think about the profit lost children.

Or floppies in case of fossils like Dune 2 ;)
