I don't understand this idea that you require a high pinpoint alpha or 60lrm tubes to do well in these events.

I have 20 tubes and 4 MLas and do just fine.

Yep. 20 tubes and 2 LLas for me. My standard challenge Mech is a Stormcrow with 4 x LRM-5 and 2 CERLL. Generally the only games in which I don't get a kill in that Mech are total wipes.

I got a point in ~75% of my matches, and it was only that low because I'm still leveling up my Enforcers. For some reason I have a more difficult time with the 5D so it sometimes takes me 2-3 matches to get a win (for the double xps) in that Mech, and even that often comes without a kill. The 4R and 5P don't have the problem.

I just played normally and it actually felt like the matches were pretty normal. But then again, I knew from the outset that getting 50 points wasn't going to happen so I didn't even try. I ended up with 30 points.

Total match score for a weekend would be interesting. I'd also like to see this same tournament, but let each kill+assist pair count as a point. (If you get 3 kills and 5 assists in a match, that's 3 points. 2 kills and 1 assist is 1 point. Etc.)

But the main thing is that the tournament needs to be set up so that it isn't just a pure grind. As others have already pointed out, this challenge required a minimum of 80 games to complete and realistically at least 100. At 6 games per hour, that's 15-20 hours of gaming over 3 days. And that's if you're good... if you're only scoring a point in half your games you'll need 25-30 hours of gaming.

Why does every challenge have to be an insane endurance grind?

It's causing some serious burnout for me, where I don't want to play the game for nearly an entire week after throwing 110+ games down the toilet on a weekend, just to knock out all the challenges.

My group basically doesn't even play on weekends anymore:

1) Challenge weekends cause weird gameplay that they don't find fun.
2) Completing the challenges takes an insane amount of time that people with lives can't devote to gaming, thus putting the rewards out of reach.

So... playing MWO over a challenge weekend is less fun for little or no reward. From their point of view, why bother playing at all? So they don't. PGI is absolutely scaring people away with these challenges, so I hope the metrics that they're collecting are worth it.

Right now I'm getting 2 failures for every success. And it's not because I'm bad, it's because I don't play to kill steal. Right now you're rewarding people who play like idiots, who don't play to win, with free stuff. And you're punishing people who don't play like idiots, who try to win the match rather than kill steal, by withholding free stuff. Unless I pilot some stupid high burst damage mech that I hate driving and then fight my own team for kills, I won't get to 50 within 3 days. It will take upwards of 150 games. Almost 13 hours if I spend 5 minutes in each game (lol). Over 3 days.

This is unacceptable and it destroys the quality of the game for the duration of the event. I think we can all agree that everyone has been playing like an idiot for every single tournament with kill requirements. Moreover it also fatigues players who grind it out, making them not want to play for a month. You could argue that the event is optional, but a free mech & bay will make it appear non optional to most people.

REPLACE THE KILL REQUIREMENT WITH A POINT SYSTEM! IT'S NOT OKAY TO MAKE YOUR OWN TEAM A BIGGER OBSTACLE THAN THE OTHER TEAM! IT'S NOT OKAY TO SHOEHORN EVERYONE INTO STUPID MECHS LOADOUTS!
Well when I compare THIS challenge to LAST WEEK's challenge, requiring the WIN for the point to count, I'll take THIS week's challenge every dang time.

Unfortunately for challenges the issue of KS'ing and TK'ing always comes to a head. I accidentally TK'd more people this particular weekend (especially Sunday afternoon) from the people desperately trying to steal a kill for a point than at any other time, BUT, that's what ALWAYS happens during these challenges.

The heavy, medium, light builds "dash" in, getting between a high alpha team mate and the target he's shooting at and die, then scream bloody murder about TK'ing.

It's frustrating, but, meh... I got TK'd my fair share too, just because of the same silliness. Got all excited and lumbered forward at 64.4kph in my King Crab, only to block someone's incoming missiles, lasers, ballistics with my ass.

Ultimately of the various challenges, this one was ok. I like the score based challenges, where it's (if I remember the formula correctly): (kills*X)+(assists*Y)+(damage/15-team damage).

Those I think worked out well, and as long as the value for Y was greater than the value for X, it kept people from feeling so desperate they had to do stupid things to get kills...

Personally, I like the random reward events like the Stocking Stuffer, but it makes sense that those are infrequent and for specific occasions.

For goal-oriented events like this past week, I'd like to see more of them based on match score. Someone else already suggested something similar, but it could have several tiers (numbers all made up; adjust as appropriate):

30 games with match score > 30 gets you a Mech statue.
20 games with match score > 60 gets you a stock Mech.
10 games with match score > 90 gets you a champion Mech.

To me that would feel more like a challenge than the current grind-fests.

The trick is to not require an insane number of games to complete any tier, at least in theory. Of course if you're just an average player then the top tier may be out of reach, but it will be because you don't have the skill to complete the challenge and not because you don't have the time to grind it out. In fact the number of games needed at each level could theoretically be just 1 if you set the needed match score appropriately. (Use your data to figure that out... but off the top of my head I'd say something like 75, 100, and 125?)

The Christmas event was pretty awesome. Or rather the awards were. It was a nice bonus to have without feeling being "forced" to do it.

I personally think that a combination of assits + kills = certain pointlevel will have a better effect on the gameplay. Having people get mad about kill stealing and stuff doesn't make the community more welcoming and friendly.

I'm also a very fond of the idea that a kill should be equally awarded as an assist. Since getting the last point of damage shouldn't be the deciding factor.

Assists should ALWAYS be worth MORE than a kill in a game based on TEAM WORK.

It helps mitigate the KS factor that builds such ire and results in so many accidental TKs.

The Halloween event was universally loved because it was low stress, and gave great rewards.

The Christmas event was similar but limited, but still a great event.

I like the idea of a free mech event, but the past couple have had very high requirements, making it difficult to achieve unless the player puts in 10 or more hours to get it. That's a lot of time to devote over a weekend. Perhaps the best way to fix this is to make the event last over the course of a week, rather than just the weekend. 7 days, with spaced out, reasonable sessions (~2 hours after work/school, for instance) allows players to complete the challenge with less urgency. It also encourages them to play on weekdays. It also gives them a chance to work on getting XP with new mechs, rather than forcing them to play an already mastered mech to multiply their chances of getting a kill.

Lastly, I miss the days of an easy to achieve challenge that gave a big prize, even if it was a rare event like the free Centurion and Thunderbolt in February and April of 2014.

Here are the mech "giveaway" events along with their requirements and how many games it took me to complete.

Win a Phoenix Mech Challenge (Thunderbolt) and 5 Wins for a Free mech (Centurion) - 5 wins 10 matches, each

To the Victors - 58 matches for 20 wins / kill / assist / stay alive

Like a Champion / Like a champion Mk2 - 90-108 matches for 50 qualifying wins

Adder Up - 133 matches for 80 "points"

The Like a Champion and Adder Up challenges had additional requirements for extras, like patterns and cockpit items however, skewing the number of matches higher. However, these extreme requirements just cause burnout.

I know that PGI can't make it so easy to achieve these events that they'll lose sales, but if only 1 mech is given away, that still requires people to buy another two of the same chassis in order to Master it. That encourages premium time, a hero purchase (I bought half a dozen heroes to round out my 3rd chassis) and more time in game.

Making these events a little easier to achieve will work in PGI's best interest.

You're killing us with kindness. We aren't used to this. It's awkward and I can't think of anything mean to say. Fooey!

If I may suggest something, could we see a challenge that gives points based on rewards?
In the game we get rewards for Dealing The Most Damage, or achieving a Solo Kill (a combination of Dealing The Most Damage and a Killing Blow). So, it'd be interesting to see points rewarded via the reward system, rather than straight up kills/assists.

1 Kill 1 Assist, you're hardly being asked to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, and you know what, you don't have to do it, you can play exactly the same as any other day and ignore the event.

No, you can't. Players are looking out for their own score and fu*k everyone else. There is no incentive to win the match as long as the individual gets their points. As a Dire pilot, I am getting abandoned virtually every single game. I have gone from regularly getting 700+ damage to half my event matches being sub 100 damage games because I get left behind and light rolled most games. The sooner this sh*t is over, the better.

They could give nothing.

They lowered the score. To the point that even the new guy who joined our unit was able to qualify for a few bags. He has been playing for 2 weeks.

This event actually is not as bad as most for making people alter their game play. Most people can play as normal and still qualify so honestly I have not seen alot of abberant game play and usually I kind of avoid events because of that. This one I have not needed to.

PGI has not put out an event in awhile. Likely because they had alot of complaints about them, and they have been focusing on the pts balance stuff. Some were good some were bad. As a player that dislikes special events in pretty much every game I realize that the majority of the player base as a whole likes them and even I enjoyed some of them, this one included.

Forums are not really a good baseline for the like or dislike of a feature as people happy with something rarely vocalize it. Those that are displeased raise the roof. Hence why most forums are toxic and alot of players avoid them. I really wish that they would put up a vote screen in game about feature changes and such that they were planning to get all those players that avoid the forums.

All in all this is a fun amusing event ANYONE can get in on. Some players may have to alter their playstyle to increase their odds on getting a bag. To them the reward is more important to the fun. Alot of us are just having fun and going "Oh cool look I got a cool prize" The fact that I have only had a handfull of matches not qualify has no bearing on this though as I never play the game for the events.

I also find it ironic that forumites complain that someone has necroed an old thread.

They also would complain if someone started a new thread.

Heh, really you cannot win.

This event is get a match score of 150, which is super easy to do. The infamous 1 kill 1 assist challenge was well... A bit **** and did cause a lot of kill stealing.
