The current Panther sale got me thinking, "Do I need to buy them when I've already got a RVN-4X?".
Granted, the energy weapon quirks on the Raven 4X aren't as good as the Panthers' but the quirks themselves are already decent: +30% to energy weapon range and -30% to laser duration. Plus, the Raven's energy hardpoints are mounted higher and that makes it naturally better as a ridge humping sniper.
Do you already own a Raven 4X? Do you still want to buy Panthers?
Some comparison builds that I made up (using ERPPC):
RVN-4X
PNT-10K
Panther For Raven Pilots?

2/3 of the Pan variants can pack more self-defense missiles. 2/3 also have more energy hardpoints. Their hitboxes are probably better as well (humanoid chest, legs aren't as big, shieldy arms). In some cases they get better quirks (namely [ER]PPC velocity/heat/cooldowns). They seem to accelerate/decelerate faster as well (Smurfys says 15% faster).
Ravens get higher hardpoints and a higher engine cap, and sometimes better quirks (this specific 4X variant is debatable).Their gun arms also aren't as vulnerable.

The Raven 4X is currently a better mech that all the panthers IMO, if we are talking strictly about strength. 2 big laser weapons with those quirks and you are pretty much the ultimate hill/corner peeker. I like pushing it all the way and do 2LPLs, 500+m range with almost no face time due to extremely short duration is super fun.
But the panthers, even if weaker, are more about PPCs and SRMs and tanky hitboxes. And I think they play differently enough to be worth having for funsies.

The Raven is an ugly bird, the Panther is humanoid like a proper 'mech should be. Of course you should buy them
Seriously though, the Panthers are really tough little beasties and a joy to play. Be ready to mix it up high-speed an in-close as well as sniping from range and you'll have a lot of fun with them.
(Disclaimer: I don't own any Ravens)

2 ERLL will do better on the raven 4x. 2 LL will do better on the Panther 8Z. Panther 9Rs offers a different take on the 2 x LPLs than the Raven...more fire with less range.

Ravens are great looking mechs they show real personality with their movements in battle and I love them.
Really like the panther also its good looking and loads of fun.
Im glad I have both.
My pick of the panthers would be the 8z 2 LL 1 srm6 with LL and srm cooldown modules.
