OK all I can find about this are OLD information. Can we get some updates at to what is tweakable now and what is not adjustable. The last posts with info are april 14th 2014. So can we get the ball rolling and figure out if it's worth messing with anymore, for both dx9 and dx11.

I'm not sure what your trying to change in the user.cfg file, but I think many of the old settings still apply (such as FOV).

Basically the config file is now gone, but you can still create your own user.cfg file with the individual things you want to change and save it in the old location (where it used to be). It will still work.

I created a user.cfg file and the only thing in it is the FOV setting (I am running 80 or 75 now I think). I just dumped it where it used to be and the next time the game started, my FOV was changed.

I hope this was what you were talking about and it helped.

This is what I use in mine:
cl_fov = 79
gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0

It sets the FOV back a bit, turns off cockpit glass, turns off DoF, and turns off the hideous film grain.

Since I set that discussion loose on twitch, here's mine again:

gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0
cl_fov=80
gp_default_cockpit_light=1

These are all the option I know about, a complete documentation by PGI would be great. There hasn't changed much though since then, only cockpit light was added.

Although I honestly don't mind those effects as much as some people, I am curious, does it help the frame rate a tiny bit disabling some of those effects? My computer runs the game OK, but every little bit helps.

Yeah, it does help my frame rate pretty significantly actually. I gain about 8 fps with these off in the current patch. Plus I hate all these effects anyway.

That's good to know, I might try turning some (if not all) of it off.

Ok, I am a noob regarding this. So on this patch,where do I put this file ?
Does it matter if it is dx9 or dx11 ?
What about the multi threading aspect? Does it need to be turned on or not anymore.

I know I am not the only one, I am hoping to centralize most info about user.cfg in this location. If you have alink and don't want to repeat yourself, feel free to add. But make it a recent link, not something dated to pre CW patches.

It will either be located in your installation's root direction (C:\Program Files (x86)\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online usually unless you specified a different location) or you will have to make one manually. Generally you will have to make one manually unless you created one previously. To make one you just go into to the folder, make a new text document, add your options (below), and rename it "user.cfg".

cl_fov = 79 (field of view amount)
gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0/1 (off/on cockpit glass)
r_DepthOfField=0/1 (off/on depth of field)
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0-1.0 (film grain amount)

Ok. is there a list of what can actually be modified on this thing? What are the parameters for said modifications, and the effects on your gaming system.

Plz let's try to be concise and precise. There seems to be a lot of witch doctor info about this.

If any of you can get some devs involved on this topic, even better.

There use to be a massive list floating around of everything you can potentially change in a user.cfg but I honestly do not remember where it was posted or if it is still accurate.

This has pretty much everything you can change in the .cfg and I think all of it is still tunable. A lot of these are adjustable in game now. I don't know what all of these do, but most of them are pretty self explanatory. Most that are set to 1 or 0 are binary with 1 meaning "On" and 0 meaning "off"

How anyone can tolerate PC games with FOV less than 95 is beyond me. Feels like I'm stuck in a tunnel every time I used to play COD.

(75 FOV, COD?! Really!??!)

These are the main ones that I know work.

Part of Ovion's Handy Guide to: How to Optimise MWO if you're having Framerate Issues or are using a lower spec computer:
user.cfg
The first thing and most useful thing is to adjust your user.cfg file.
This will be in C:\Program Files\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online (or your personal install location for MWO)
If you don't have a user.cfg, you can create a notepad file and name it user.cfg (ensure you have 'view file extensions' turned on, to void a file called user.cfg.txt)
If you have User Account Control active, you're best off copying (or creating) the user.cfg to the desktop, editing it there, then pasting it into your MWO directory.
If you have UAC active, in addition to the above, run MWO as admin (by right clicking on the launch icon and selecting 'Run as Admin') at least once for the changes to take effect.

In that file put the following:
Spoiler
  • fov is the Field of View, from memory this shouldn't be set higher than around 90-95, or lower than around 60 to avoid errors.
  • Cockpit Glass is the texture on the glass, Flim grain adds film grain, depthoffield is blur. These don't really do much gamewise, just eat quite a bit of resources, or obscure the screen a little.
  • MaxFPS is an FPS cap, meaning it won't attempt to run higher freeing up additional resources rather than trying to push for FPS, which can go to other things.- If you're hitting 30FPS fine, you can attempt increasing it to 45, then 60.
  • The rest are things I still don't entirely understand, but they help, so I continue to use them!

What about multi threading in user.cfg . Does it need to be turned on now or is that automatic in nowadays MWO ?

don't think there is any multithreading (at least not that you can tweak in any way)

OMG what a difference this makes....Dam !

link here. hence me asking the question. scroll down a little

http://www.onlinemec...u-modify-on-mwo

or here

This user.cfg is for a quad-core or better CPU with a single, Geforce 660 class GPU or better (can be modified to force SLI):

d3d11_TripleBuffering=1
r_MultiThreaded=1
sys_physics_CPU=3
r_TexturesStreaming=2
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0[/color]

You can add r_MultiThreaded = 1

0=no multithreading
1=enable rendering in a separate thread
2=automatic (this is the default)

I don't see a difference when using 1 vs 2 but some people say they do.

There are things you can do to make it more efficient as far as the cores go as well....

This is the one a guy in my unit gave me...had to make some changes but still good place to start!

d3d11_TripleBuffering=1
r_MultiThreaded=1
r_MultiGPU = 1
sys_physics_CPU=3
r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0
cl_fov=66
gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0
r_DepthOfField=0
i_mouse_smooth=0
i_mouse_accel=0
i_mouse_accel_max=0

Lol, what is DoF and Film grain? Seen it on these config file threads, but what is it and in game whats it look like?

And is there a cfg that can brighten the place up a little? The brown contrasting against and on everything is annoying....walk around a corner staring right at a mech and cant see it cuz its camo'd up perfectly to the brown wall behind it.
