I really really REALLY wish that was the Kurita warhorn. The current one is okay, if a bit weaksauce, until the 2 second mark, then it gets just silly.
Davion is...*shakes head* glad I'm not a Davion fanboy.
Exactly, I literally just posted the exact same thing on Reddit. The Kabuki shout alone for Kurita would make a lot of sense, unlike the underwhelming flourish they're apparently going to use.
OMG most of these warhorns are so hilariously bad.... Kurita, Davion, Marik who's responsible for this? FRR is ok-ish, Steiner and Liao decent at least.
The plus-side is that Steiner and Liao are my factions of choice pretty much, so I'll get 2 Warhorns each. You got away this time PGI but it was close....
Ok, I was really looking forward to hearing the warhorn selections and hoping they would be straightforward, iconic sounds that represent the culture . . . not unlike what we got for the Clans. These . . . these are pretty freaking terrible. There's a few high notes in them. Here's what I was expecting to hear. Other's opinions may vary.
Davion: The current one I agree is an absolutely terrible sound, and I can't listen to it without saying "News at 11" at the end of it. Something based on a traditional military march or bugle call, such as this, is more what I was thinking.
Start this clip around 1:05 for the kind of music I'm referring to.
Kurita: This one isn't so bad if you chop off the last 3 seconds (just after the second clap). But I was expecting something more honed in traditional Japanese music (since they are still reasonably strict followers of a Bushido-like code)
Liao: Actually pretty good. Just make the gong louder and more pronounced, with the resonance carrying through the entire few second clip.
Marik: Being that they are a pseudo melting-pot of culture, the electric guitar isn't a bad choice. There's something about it that just puts me off from it, but that's personal choice.
Rasalhague: The hammer-strikes are a good touch, but they should be evened out. Bring out the choir in a powerful and deep tone, while providing several even hammer strikes, and it'd be near perfect. Some examples for the effect I was thinking of:
Start this clip around 1:10 for what I'm talking about.
Or the background choir here with the hammer strikes added in:
Steiner: Where in this is the powerful roman/celtic influenced feudal monarchy? If it was a generic warhorn or something from the Heavy Metal then it wouldn't be terrible, but still not that great. Start pulling inspiration from music like this:
Listen to the whole thing . . . it's worth it.
Regardless, as they currently stand. I'll be waiting a little bit to see if anything is done about these things (since I'm not the only one having horrid reactions to them). When I eventually make my selections, if nothing is done, then it'll be based off the faction patterns and colors I like the most over anything else . . . which is disappointing.
I really like them, but they probably could be better.
Anyone remember playing Age of Empires 2? Remember the little audio clips the encyclopedia would play when you went to read about a faction? Some of those would be pretty cool.

I will reserve judgement until I shoot someone and hear them, but they sound really cheesy. Not hearing the war or the horn. Why didnt Kurita get a roaring dragon or something?
