EDIT

As suggested ... rather than a rank ... have a tag on your forum profile that just has a GREEN up pointing arrow for ELO increase ... and a RED arrow for an ELO drop. Amber Circle for no change.

Update it once every 24 hours or so

With the option to hide this arrow or show it as a player selected option

This 'ARROW' would give ZERO indication of your position in the ELO scale ... only if you have improved or got worse or stayed the same.

Hey

Is it possible for us to be able to check our ELO rating. I would honestly like to know if I am improving.

I know there might be an issue with min/maxing but I don't think we need the exact numbers.

Maybe a Pilot Skill Rank

X-XX ELO points = Recruit
Y-YY ELO Points = Veteran
Z-ZZ ELO Points = Ace

With many grades in between...

Recruit
Experienced
Veteran
Battle Hardened
Elite
Ace

Cant think of any more ...

No, please don't!

All this will do is cause an e-peen contest within the community. Dismissing other players opinion for their lower Elo rating or other such nonsense.

I agree Egomane.
its bad enough that I run across some founders who are full of themselves that they look down on anyone who are not as good as them or just look down on people in general.

heck there has been other suggestion about people being able to avoid being on the same side as new players or those with low ranks which this would be supporting those other suggestions indirectly.

You are both being way too negative!

Anyone who is bragging about being a founder will brag about anything. Its them not the founder tag that makes them be an idiot.

Preventing people from knowing how well they are doing in the game just because some people are idiots ... when ELO is a real factor in the game mechanics, is just legislating for the lowest common denominator!

Everyone knows you have to start somewhere and It will help focus you on improving your piloting skills.

I am a founder ... been playing since day one (or there abouts) not looked down my nose at anyone in the game.

People will be dismissed for one reason or another ... geographical location ... faction loyalty ... mech build ... age ... Gender ... Battletech player or not ... the list is endless.

If they want to be an idiot then they will be. That is not a reason for preventing people who wish to know, how well they compare.

So just because people are already discriminating (please consult the code of conduct on this topic) others for various reasons, you want to give them another one?

You don't need to know where you stand on the Elo ladder to have fun in the game. If you want a ranking make one of your own. Set yourself goals to achieve. Participate in PGI and player driven tournaments. There are plenty of opportunities to give yourself a feeling of self respect and achievement. You don't need something that can be a cause for trouble for it.

Again with the negative waves man! I want to give people a wayt to track their progress. I would like to KNOW how well I am doing and I would like to know based upon the grading system the GAME is working to. this is not a negative thing!

As for your discrimination comment... really?

What are you ... a noob? (JOKE)

My point is it does not matter how many ways they have in the game to label people ... they will invent something if none exists.

This will be positive for some ... and a tool for tools.

Russ Bullock said it ... The player base is incredibly mature. Have a little faith!!

Faith is for those without better knowledge. As much as I want to believe in the better of a human being, I have seen to many things to actually know better.

No, an appeal to faith is not a way to convince me that this is even remotly a good a idea.

I got this!! Make this a poll or I will if this disappears!

Simply make a green arrow pointing up, a yellow "--" mark for no change, or a red arrow pointing down that updates every 24 hours. You have no value assigned to your ELO, but you get to know if you are at least doing better or worse given your recent history.

I like this actually, as it is only a placebo with no real value behind it. It might still give some the feeling of achievment they look for.

Yep... it's bad enough with people comparing their imagined Elo.

Do what you do on the battlefield and let the chips fall where they may.

or how about this, if someone wants to know how they are doing then make it a private thing so player X cannot see player Y's elo.

other wise It will still be a problem and not a good idea.

as to the founder thing I didn't say it was all of them just a select few and it also stems from the fact that it will still negatively play a factor in game as well.

as I stated before people have come up with the not so bright idea about allowing players to select players based on 'skill' and has always been shot down.

however with with it is just one step away from that happening so I say no thanks.

after all it is no one's business what other peoples elos are.

And then the Elo comparison threads would start. Best leave it unknown.

aye Kjudoon
Some might see this as a good idea but in the end it would only end badly and would hurt players in the long run in different ways.

so it should always be left unknown.

how? if all we have is an arrow on our profile saying that our ELO went up or down in the last 24 hours?

Nothing to compare but gives people a sense of accomplishment,

no numbers ... just the Arrow showing movement

Even then I can kind of see it being a requirement for you to take a screenshot of your elo for unit membership... etc

this is why i agreed with the ARROW option. Just an indicator of progress ... or slide (leading to motivation to keep doing what your doing or to work harder!)

how is the progress indicator a trophy?

Because Elo isn't progress. This isn't a quest to hit maximum Elo. That's like saying the goal of a Tennis Player is to be ranked #1 in the world, but ignores the need to win tournaments and is only as good as your last game.

Nobody wins in this scenario.

Of course ELO is progress. It is a number ... the number goes up when you improve and down when you get worse.

I agree that seeing the number could be used for evil ... ;) ... but the arrow would be pure and innocent!

If your Arrow changed to an orange circle you would only have two options.

A - Your ELO has not changed because your ELO is at max
B - Your ELO has not changed because you have not improved in the last 24 hours

I play the game to have fun ... but part of that fun is often a sense of achievment

Some people find that feeling in winning ... others in getting ALL the mechs unlocked and mastered ... other in getting top match score ... ELO improvement is just another way to make the game more rewarding

It is being tracked so ... lets use it ... in a pure and innocent way ;)

I see what you're saying Wood.

The problem is 90% of gamers are not pure or innocent and would not use it for good.

Gamer nature be gamer nature.
