I play from a laptop that is in need of replacement. I run all my setting on low with the minimum screen size. So data rates and ping mean a lot to me.
I also play in a variety of settings since I travel for work and spend a lot of time on the road and in various hotels. These are not known to have the greatest connections and sometimes I am forced to play via hotel Wifi.
Best road experience I received was a wired Ethernet connection in a Staybridge suites in Dublin Ohio, right outside Columbus. Ping was around 25-35. Some of the best game play I had. Frame rates in the low to mid 20s, with the exception of Mining Collective, which just flat out sucks.
Worse I had was a toss up between the Elegante in Midland Texas and the Piccadilly in Fresno California. Both hotels are older and had no Ethernet conncection. Also their Wifi was pretty bad, especially in the evenings when everyone was trying to use it at the same time. Practically unusable. Pings varied from 200-300 all the way into the thousands and would lag very badly.
I have played on the Euro servers and I have a difficult time. I usually run in the 70-80 ping, on the NA servers, and unless I get Mining I can play pretty well. The Euro servers give me about 150-180 and the maps that play well, like Canyon and HPG begin to lag. Mining and Crimson are very difficult to play and the frame rate loss is very noticeable. River City is also slow, but usually when there is a lot going on. Otherwise it's not bad.
I realize that a lot of my problem lies with the hardware I am using, but I am a diehard Battletech fan and I love to play MWO, so I deal with it.
Once I get into the high 100 low, 200 ping range it is very noticeable.
