http://penny-arcade....crotransactions I love that video. It completely matches my thoughts on F2P/Micro-transactions.
It's one of the problems with LotRO, the fact they made the Ettenmoors accessible only to paying players. They have started to fix this, by finally allowing F2P players access to monster play, but they need to totally open it up.

When did boosts become Pay2Win?

Yeah, where I refuse to buy content that excludes non-paying players in a F2P environment, I would actually pay money to support a game that does not exclude the non-paying players. Like the video says, in a multiplayer game the players are the content so recognize how important that is and make the effort to keep them playing so you have an active gaming community.
On a side note, can you believe that people paid $70 just for a digital monicle?

LoL, I have trouble spending the 20ish bucks for a horse (well technically, just a new skin for the horse I already have) in LotRO, or for a Refitted ship in STO (Same ship as already in the game but some very slight changes). Little alone STO's '3-ship' pack, which is really the same ship with only the most minor changes and running more than 50 bucks!
Imagine MWO doing that, selling the same damned Awesome but 3 variants like the AWS-8R, AWS-8T & 9M 'All for the low bundled price of 50-60 bucks!

How is this topic not dead, and how are even 6% of people silly enough to consider boosts P2W?

Boosts won't give you an edge to other players in the battlefield. The prime example for P2W is World of Tank's gold ammunitions. In MWO that's not going to come as gold ammo usually gives you more penetration power and sometimes slighty more dmg. In MWO those would be like special rounds for AC's which would penetrate mech's armor right away and attempt to hit like ammo inside enemy mech's for example arm and blow it of with one shot. Fortunately that's not going to be happening. (But what if clans invented...)

"Inaccessible to the general public" Key words and they're yours. Lets imagine it takes 1000 days of 12 hours a day playing for free to save up for the best mech setup. Now imagine a 1000x c-bill earning boost, you'd get the best mech setup in one day. 999 days where that setup is inaccessible to the general public. Still not pay to win?
Thats a silly hypothetical of course but it puts the lie to your general endorsment on boosts not being pay to win. Founders mech is 25% and premium account is 50% iirc. 75% total isn't likely to be a big enough difference to be pay to win on the c-bills side.
However you can just buy things directly for real money so until we know how long a free player takes to deck out a mech fully we won't know how long you'll have the advantage by opening your wallet.
This is another arguement for an ELO system btw. With ELO if you have low tech mechs and you get matched against someone with a shiney Clan mech with all the trimmings its because they're a really bad pilot and need that gear just to have a chance against you.
The reverse is true like i mentioned previously as well,
if the boost is 1000x and it only takes 1 hour of normal play time for a decent mechwarrior to save up for the best mech setup then the whole boost deal is frankly a waste of money.
THEN we come to battletech where every mech technically are already lethal to start with, what's the 'BEST' mech setup?
there isn't one... since every single damn weapon and module or equipment you attach or swap into the mech have it's own pro and cons for the most part, though traditionally some things tend to be easier to use due to the common prevalence of certain conditions on the map/battle.
the exception of course are some of the improvement on designs etc that come up as TIME passes reflecting the new designs that eventually shows up on the field, but since we're following the timeline from the start, we effectively have until whenever it was introduced into BT lore to have enough asset to acquire them.
The closest thing to a 'BEST' mech setup?
The one you are GOOD at, since we can shove you into a fully loaded LBX-AC20 ladden assault mech and you will do JACK ALL NOTHING if you don't know how to use the loadout properly or how to best utilize it if you don't know what's the strength and weakness of your current loadout and mech design.

The only time a boost would be p2w is if there is one op unit that has much higher maintenance costs, to the point that you can field it constantly with an earnings boost but loose money and eventually have to switch out of it without a boost. Otherwise it's pay to progress faster.
