I usually have my main groups, and an extra group set on chain fire for when things get toasty. That way, you can get flow of damage going instantly when you want, or mete it out over time if the situation calls for it.

I go with two trigger set ups when doing that. One is the alpha, the other is on chain fire.
Yes, that's how I setup my "weapon groups" for my HBK-4P.

You'd want that as a secondary group and not your primary.
It needlessly spreads damage when you're running cool.
Sometimes I already have 3 weapon groups so adding more is not an option because pressing that 4th key on the mouse disturbs my aim.
Clicking multiple times did feel rather awkward for the first time but I'm quickly adapted to it. I'm talking about clicking very fast here so the enemy probably can't tell if it's chain fired. The main benefit is I can choose if I want to fire 1, 2, 3, or 4 lasers on the fly.
My laser boat Timby is now much better at firing her laser. I can constantly hose the enemy with lasers without guesstimating if I would shutdown or not when firing this or that group.

Remember OP, SPL boats dont chainfire unless you're juggling ie some sort of Trollmando **** goin on. ;D
For sure, bro. So far I still don't have a build that needs to chain fire (C)-SPL.
