Actually I think players with decent high speed internet, good machines to play this with and enough loose cash to buy into all these packages are much more numerous than you are willing to concede.

And exactly this sort of customer is the one that PGI wants to keep long time, hence making separate high res package would improve their retention and perhaps pull in new clients from steam. If the game looks like early this century, we are not going to be getting enough people in with steam, at least we'll get numbers and start seeing how their choices impact player numbers.
Yes, the game needs to run on lower spec machines, but that is no reason not to have high end catered for as well.

I would be fine with them dropping all the resolutions in the game to 1k, so long as they had an optional download for ALL 2k, or 4k.

Remember, the Catapult founders is one of the few with full 2k res textures.

More people need to see this, understand this and support this. 1K textures are not 2015, they are not even 2010.

You really start to appreciate the paid (!!!!!!!!) camos when you get close...

The paid camo's on my Atlai looks so sad.

Camos and paint should be top quality... Because that's their selling points.

I don't even have a top of the line machine, but I know I could easily support 2k normalized, and I would love to have it. It'd be great to have a 4k optional download, for the people with the machines to support it.

I know if I could afford a beastly machine I would want the beastly textures to go with it.

I'm all for standard 2k textures. I'm all for an optional 4k texture pack, even if it's a considerable download. I've only spent ~$100 on content for this game, so far, and I am a little disappointed with the texture qualities and the downward trend since launch. I'm just a programmer, so I don't know anything about texturing, but I can't imagine that making this change would be a massive undertaking. I do, however, understand that there are probably a large number of other projects for this game that PGI is working on. I, personally, would like to see improvements in: graphics (even if optional), current maps, cockpit displays, the UI, or any number of current features before I asked for new 'Mechs that don't really offer that much more variety of gameplay. The new M.A.S.C system for the Gladiator excluded. Shouldn't existing features be refined before a proposed launch on Steam? If PGI plans to create a larger player base by releasing on Steam, then why not do whatever they can to blow the competition out of the water? If the 'Mechs and associated camo/skins are the major selling point, then they should look as good as possible. What other selling point is there? MC and Premium Time go towards....'Mechs, right? I guess it's a case priorities. PLENTY of us have already spent money on custom colors and patterns, so why fix what isn't "broken"? Honestly, I just wish LRM's looked as good as they did in the Beta. *shrug* Truth is, none of us are in the board room and have a good sense of where PGI is going to take us.

Just for reference... how much video memory does the most consuming textures for a particular mech would account for (well, I guess I'm asking what is the worst case scenario in memory consumption, given what you know)?

I dislike "normalization." The last time PGI did something like that, my CN9-YLW lost its massive arm cannon and a great part of its appeal. Now, anytime I hear that word, I become skeptical.

Yeah, for PGI, normalization could well mean to lower the resolution of all textures to match the Jenner's current one.
