1. Why do you still play this game?
For the love of the MW genre, very first time I was introduced to MW was with the very first PC game way back on an IBM that I saw at my friends house, his older brother had Mechwarrior, GUNSHIP!, and ONE Must Fall, I got to play Mechwarrior and have been hooked every since.
And now? I've played alot of multiplayer games, Been through CounterStrike-CSS-CSGO, Battlefield-1942/2/4, Left-4-Dead 1/2, Minecraft, Operation-Flashpoint-Arma ect.ect. I just got bored of them mostly and either technology or friends moved on.

MWO is always changing, always keeps you guessing, and still surprises me once in a while, and for a Shooter game.. Thats pretty unique, probably because just like chess or any other good game, it was built on an amazing foundation, that being TT battletech.

I mostly feel like there really isn't anything better to play right now.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Its the swings man.. Never played a game like this where you can be doing really well, then suddenly be completely screwed so quickly and so harshly, it wears on me..
Just like anything, gotta step away once in a while. Especially when there is a huge change, like Clans, or Quirks, gotta let things calm down before jumping back into the flames.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
A.
Split ECM into 2 equipment devices (1ton G-ECM for personal stealth only & 3ton A-ECM for group area coverage), and redesigning its function based more closely on TT information to move it away from being the super Jesus-Box to an actual balanced feature.

B.
Solve hitreg problems, nothing is more important in a shooter than Hitreg reliability and honestly, if it isn't there eventually neither will your players.

C.
Convince Paul and other PGI staff to stop with Kneejerk & massive changes to balance and features.
Do things slowly and a little bit at a time if you actually want to balance things
And lastly.. "IF ITS NOT BROKEN, DON'T TOUCH IT!" (looking at you Jumpjets!, poor highlander)
Stop listening to whiny mouth breathers on Redit, come to these forums and start having some conversations with more of the playerbase, do votes and polls with the Majority of the playerbase before doing any huge changes, we're not all a bunch of tards, we might actually have some important insight or ideas that you didn't think of.

D.
Re-acquire Unseen content, get the classic mechs into the game, We want our War-hammer, Archer, Marauder, and anything classic to be part of the game where it belongs.
Except for the PheonixHawk-LAM, who wants that anyway :D

1. Why do you still play this game?

Nostalgia for the old games and CBT combined with the IP being held hostage by PGI, and it is still pretty much the most fully featured giant robot combat game out there [sadly.]

But mostly, it's habit, like smoking or drinking hard liquor.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

All the time, whenever some stupid unfun meta like the poptart wars or the next great LURMpocalypse shows up and the game quits being any fun to play at all, or simply when I get burned out on the same old thing every day.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
For example ECM re-design, balance problems.

Hire more than two actual coders and run the game on something more than an ancient virtual server hidden in Paul's basement.

Get rid of the ugly as sin cancer weapons and go back to the old damage texture system, remove the ugly drab artistic vision filters from 90% of the maps.

I enjoy it.

I like battletch and mechwarrior anyway.
I like stompy robots in general.
PGI has done reasonably well making a fun game

I have been, but not deliberately.
Short story - stupid work.

More a case of, I normally only get to play maybe 1-3 days a week max atm.
Today is the first time I get to play properly in about 1-2 weeks though. :(

More weapons, to unlock more mechs.
(Rocket Launchers, Rifles, Grenade Launchers, Artillery, etc)

More targets.
Tanks, aircraft, infantry, battlearmour.

Even if not playable.
Though imagine how much more money they'd make if they were playable. :P

A:) I play this game solely because I am a diehard Mechwarrior fan (I like battletech but honestly it's Mechwarrior that brings me to it). Ever since piloting a mech in MW2: Mercs I've never stopped playing the franchise. Side note - if they recreated that game alone...it would be epic. No other mech game has come within a mile of MW2: Mercs.

B:) I do. But it is randomized. I usually play video games more in the winter less in the summer. It's just the way I run my life. I don't think it necessarily has to do with the game or PGI. However, if they did release a whole slew of content in the summer id probably try to get on more.

Part 2 B: I also took a long hiatus to buy a new machine so I could actually see what I'm hitting. Theoretically, I've spent over $600 on this game between a new machine to play it, and various MC purchases -_-. I feel cheated right now...

1. I love the shite out of it.
2. I sometimes take breaks, but never for that long.
3. Expand game modes and CW. Also, expand the 'feel' of the gam;. Destructible terrain, larger battles, increase TTK.

Well, the game does provide an experience that you can't have anywhere else at the moment, and when I crave for that, I play a few rounds. After that urge is satisfied, I take a break of a few days/weeks, because I get bored from lack of variation.

The best way to improve the game would be to move away from pure mech vs. mech combat and add AI infantry and tank units. Along with some new maps and goals, this could lead to much more interesting battles and allow players to pilot mechs filling roles that are not available right now. Because let's face it, the mechs and equipment we have ingame is not all designed to be used against other mechs only.

Why do you still play this game?

I play because i have always loved the game of battletech. used to play kesami battle tech quite a bit

enjoyed the earlier mechwarrior titles . and could not wait for MWO . I just like the concept of heavily armed death machine stomping across the landscape laying down utter destruction on its unfortunate targets. whats not to love ?

Do you take regularly breaks? If so, why

Well unfortunately, the vision is not fully realized here and the game becomes tiresome after several days of playtime.

How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

Well if i was running the show .

1. i would create a stock mode only game with higher cbill payout and gxp earnings

2. i would take the current gameplay we have and move it into a mode called arena, where its a fixed cbill payout and gxp

3. War on heat, i would find and design a heat system that makes sense

4. would actually create mech warriors to pilot the mechs. tossing out the mech skills system and reworking it into a pilot skill system .
  • mechwarriors are killable , have health , and longevity based on how abused they are in combat. (take your mechwarrior out in battle routinely and get them hammered repeatedly, keep roasting them in the cockpit with repeated heat shutdowns) you can expect their careers to be short-lived.
  • mechwarriors will require hospital stays to recover from injuries
  • mechwarriors will be the new mech skill system the better skilled your pilot the better the mech operates in battle. the longer you keep the warrior alive the better skilled they become.
5. i would create an honor system where players can vote in game whether a player should be rewarded an honor point or loose an honor point based on their in game actions. honor points would also slowly accumulate through "completed" games played, those who leave early gain no honor.
  • honor system would only be in community warfare / stock mode
  • honor could be used to purchased special skins paint
6.would invest into all new maps , current maps moved into arena mode. including community warfare maps.

7. Cadet Mode
  • would require use of trial mechs would gain gxp, gxp requirements would need to be meet for all 4 teirs of mech
  • upon completing cadet mode the user could choose 1 mech from a selection of innersphere or clan mechs.
8.all paints and skins would be made more affordable
  • there would be even MOAR paints and skins /less cockpit items
  • there would be custom huds purchasable mc
  • there would be mech bling , head lights, nets, "mech balls" and other items to add some personality to your mechs.
9. Increase Time To Kill
  • all mechs would receive leg amour and or structure quirks based on the mech class with an eye on increasing light and medium longevity and increase prolonged fire fights and brawls)
10. Founders would get a access to a selection of founders only colors. and a special mech blingy item. most likely a giant sucker.

I like many of Mechwarrior's core mechanics of gundam fighting. Weapon weight, weapon size (critslots in most games, just hardpoint size in MW4), modular engines/guns/stuff (Medium Laser on a Locust is the same as a Medium Laser on an Atlas), various aspects of movement (arm swing, torso twist, etc.), etc.

I also prefer the more heavy and industrial artstyle of MW over the more stereotypical anime robot style that look more like giant power armor than actual stompy weapon platforms.

Compared to previous MW games, MWO has some advantages like better visuals (holy crap older MW mechs could look fugly sometimes) and much more smooth/fluid movement controls.

I wouldn't say it's "regular" because that implies a set schedule or routine. I just take periodic but long breaks from playing due to sheer boredness of playing the same thing over and over again. Then when I'm "recharged" I resume where I left off and continue the cycle...

In terms of the lowest hanging fruit, I'd want them to start caring more about the overall balance between mechs, weight classes, weapons, and equipment, to create more clear tradeoffs and to do away with direct upgrades (other than modules and the pilot tree, those are the exception). There's too many specifics to bother getting into them without derailing this thread.

I will add however that some mechanics could probably use a redesign (i.e. lock-on missiles, random UAC jamming) for making it easier to measure their balance state and/or just quality of life.

1. Why do you still play this game?
I love big stompy robots, and MWO is one of the better games to satisfy that addiction. I like it for the drop-in, drop-out match style that lets me play a couple quick matches if I have 15-20 minutes to burn rather than committing 45 minutes to an hour for League of Legends or Counter Strike.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
I take breaks from every game. MWO is no exception. I get burned out on competitive games faster than other games, so I'll usually play until I hit a losing streak or get a really good win in, then take a break for up to a week.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
Well the list is immeasurably long, but two things I'd like to see are closed beta graphical changes reverted and a reworked heat scale, that lowered the heat cap but increased dissipation to make alpha strikes more of a tactical decision rather than a doctrine.

1. Fundamentally, I love the game. I'm not even a BT guy, I was into Car Wars. But the building and playing, I just really enjoy.
2. Occasional short (few days) breaks.
3. I like the tuning they're doing. I mostly want more: maps, mechs modes.

1. Why do you still play this game?
Because it's freakin fun AND battletech.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Regular? No. Breaks? Yes. There are also other games to play out there. Break from the forums / gathering intel about the game? No. Never.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
There is so much to change, I still think the game is great right now:
  • ECM - no the whole LRM system needs a rework
  • CW extended with more background
  • More Lore in the game
  • First user Experience: tutorials and mentoring system (like dota 2) with support for different langauges
Contentwise:
  • some sort of PvE content with story background as "DLC" format content (PGI has to make a living of this game)
  • Solaris 7 for competetive folks with 1v1 2v2 4v4 and free
  • more maps for regular queues
  • new game modes for CW and regular queues

Oh god and please: The marauder.

1. Why do you still play this game?

There is something intrinsicly awesome about stomping around in a 50 foot high walking death tank and spewing forth laser, bullet, rocket, missile, & cannon doom upon other outrageous sci-fi machines of destruction. PEW-PEW MOTHERLOVER!
Also good tactical game with a different tempo to the other 'twitch' based FPSs out there.
Also HUNCHBACKS!!

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?

Yes, mostly because I have a bunch of other hobbies (and, occasionally real life stuff) that I enjoy doing. Or another game comes out that I also want to play for a bit, so I devote my limited gaming time to that for a while. It's the same way that I can honestly say I love pizza but I don't eat it every single day.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
I would personally like to see
  • the community warefare to feel like a world and a series of important conflicts with different and meaningful engagements, rather than a single set game mode with a really fancy league table
  • PVE elements, ideally in the form of episodic narrative driven content
  • a skill tree with diversity based on weight/mech/role, and options on picks rather than a single set of universal unlocks
  • an improvement in the cost of purchases, possibly even a player market in second-hand parts, so that there was less grind. nothing major, maybe 3% to 5% increase in cbills earned or drop in prices charged would be good for me
  • a command wheel with incentive for following team/lance leader instructions
  • a re-balancing of queue that acknowledges the gap between IS and Clan mechs
  • Calderon-Born and Urbanmechs to be shorter (and the Urbanmech to be the low value P.O.S. that it was in the books)

For example: for the love of the franchise.
2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

I'm curious.
Hear ya out
Keep it short as possible.
Thanks and keep it civilized
Edit: please keep it up. Perhaps we can even link this topic to Russ. Keep your answers short so he can scroll through it. Thanks!

1.I dont play many games anymore, this is primarily the only game I play.
2. YES! I only play for a few days at a time before Im bored out of my mind. I usually take few weeks or days break. Lack of game modes and certain mechanics that drive me insane, I could keep going on and on about this topic.
3. 100s of ways that I dont feel like typing. Mainly the grind, poor new player experience, poor mech design, poor weapon design.

I honestly dont like the game much but it fills the FPS itch I get and I do love Mechs.

1. Why do you still play this game?
It's generally a fun game playing both in the solo queue and in group drops.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Work keeps me on the road pretty often so I'm forced to take gaming breaks (don't own a gaming laptop to take with me). So yes, I do take breaks and I think that it's helped me to stay interested in this game for so long. I also take the time to play other games I like but MWO is definitely my primary gaming experience these days.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?
1.A proper system for collisions and melee would be cool, with melee centric mechs being introduced.
2.New modes (4v4 sound cool especially if they can integrate AI mobs of tanks/infantry)
3.Fixing certain outlier weapons (LBX, Clan ACs, etc.) and generally improving balance
4.General improvements like netcode/hit reg and graphical glitches

1. Why do you still play this game?
I barely still play, maybe a few games a week average now.

2. Do you take regulary breaks? If so, why?
Yes, (see answer to #1). Jump jet issues, ECM issues, map issues, matchmaker weight balance issues.

3. How can PGI improve? What would you like to have see it changed?

Jump jets: need to be fun. To clarify, they should not be slow and lofty, but fast and powerful. They can easily balance fast jump jets against easy poptarting.

ECM: The Angel ECM ability of GECM must be taken away, and made into a new separate Angel ECM equipment which can be slotted into the ECM hardpoint as a choice.

Map issues: larger maps would be good, and all the CW maps are too confined. They should not be based on the DOTA lanes, its just bad gameplay for this style of game.

Matchmaker: They need to make better incentives for playing the weight classes that are less than 20% of the queue consistently. CBill rewards have proven effective at making people play other weight classes than just Heavy.

Additionally, I've seen some matches where one team gets 3 Zeus' and 1 Victor, while the other team has 3 Dire Wolves and a King Crab. That is not proper weight balancing.

1. It's the only current Mechwarrior title, but I do still play the older ones.

2. The game tends to boil up on you if you stick with it too long, as it is very frustrating having the developer update so often yet fix/improve so little.

3. Fix ecm first off, launching to steam with the current mechanics will be as if not more disastrous than the response after going live.

Actually implement more maps that include more mode/lance driven content so the entire game isn't built around a single type of match and strategy.

CW has a long way to go, part of the issues would move it in the right direction with the first two change suggestions, but it is quite underwhelming for as long as it was in development.

It's a Fun drinking game. :)

2. Do you take regular breaks? If so, why?

Come on. Can't drink every night. ;)

3. How can PGI improve it? What would you like see changed?

Just let PGI do its thing ffs.

P.S. The Community can come up with 10,000,000,000 tweaks a day. The Dev Team can only change so much every 2 weeks. Total system rebuilds/overhauls are "unlikely" so the "constant and incessant whinging" about MAJOR overhauls really wears thin. The game plays great. Just build under the provided ruleset as one would for any other game, or Play Private and set your own House rules. ;)

Thanks PGI. :)

1)
Love the main idea of game, designs variety of gameplay moments. Love the strategic basics of the game and quite hardcore execution (not the best in the world but much better than common modern “press X to win” games). And this is gigant robots, and this is epic redesign of classic mechs and fresh look on board rues adopted for online game. Like it.
2)
Yes I do from time to time. Reason - for now this game has no global logic, this still session game. Public drops has no background, no global goal and no common sense - its just endless xp/money farm for the glory of the Farm God. I came back into game after CW was finally announced, and this is big step forward, but its very faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from how it should be. It’s unbalanced (matchmaking is broken, uncontrolled units blood fest humiliating pugs) its still not giving any feedback, don’t feels like participating in “huge galactic massive invasion, alliances are created and broken, honor and betrayal, epic battles and foul strikes, burning words, heroic saves, braking news….” You understand? its just .... meeeh! =( Just map with flashing dots, with some anonymous numbers presented as players, this empty faction chat window in which yellow warning message always hides writhing that players has wrote (get rid of it finally) its still click and get in session game with slightly different rules. The main disappointment, you don’t see result.
3)
On game mechanics:
Make it more hardcore!!!! Or just don’t make it any easier as it is now. More advanced staff and features, more equipment calculating and puzzles - we don’t need casual players here.
On game feels:
Keep working on bringing more logic into game. Get rid of public matches with no common sense. Focus on CW, make all matches valuable, connected to the lore, some story, some global events, something bigger than stupid farm. Make players part of fantastic MW world – THINK IN THIS DIRECTION.
For now I’m feeling ALONE i don’t feel like there is a millions players in MW galaxy. 50/60% time I’m sitting in my personnel closed and isolated hangar. More social stuff in game! I don’t know, some news lines, some global chats, message boards, events, tournaments and challenges announced by players itself.
New game modes connected to the global map (convoys, behind the line strikes, supply points attacks, supplies ambushes, etc), new game possibilities.
On technical side:
Work on game balance! This is colossal work that will newer end but without it online game will die. Matchmaking balance !!!!
