I love most of these ideas, and the ones that I disagree with (bounty) come down to application rather than intent.
We need more features like this.
Sadly each idea would take PGI 6 moths of fanfare and twitter posts to work to completion.

Before Launching On Steam, Something Needs Immediately Attention...

The most important thing is offering a gamemode for new players. Like in Starcraft, where the first 50 matches are against other new players. Everything optional of course. You can offer as much stuff as you want for new players but nothing will help them against us, the players with years of experience and fully equipped meta machines.
Lets say we have 4v4 or 8v8. TTK won't be a big problem with trials and unfinished builds and the low number of enemys.
It wouldnt split the playerbase because veterans couldn't get in those matches and new players still have the opportunity to join the veterans, if there are not enough players in the pool, with a warning that this might result in a semi-optimal player experience. Off course, having MWO on the Steam frontpage will mutliply our current playerbase by night, so having the cadet-queue be a barren land is outer question.
Tutorials and stuff is still highly important but imho the first player experience is the most important factor of it all and having a huge disadvantage just outright kills the fun.
I might just make a twitter account and spam it on russ's page.

Kicking this again. Sorry.
The game really need a in-game simulator for new players among us. Soften up the learning curve. A cool comic intro of BT and so on.
Steam is on its way and this has the learning curve of a pig with two eyes in the back.

Are we really gonna see this game go to Steam? I kinda think it was a pipe dream they will never achieve but that doesn't mean the new player experience shouldn't be much, much, much better. Really it just shouldn't be non existent which is what we have now.
Bump for Sarlic's awesome post.
