How to Win

**I will update this more later, I ran out of free time :) Feel free to post tips and tricks that will help new players**

The best way to win is to try to win. Negativity will quickly erode the cohesion of any Lance. Play your role as best you can, always endeavor to be better, and do not get discouraged by setbacks.

Play Your Role:

Command – The lance commander is responsible for communication to and from the lance, including calls for support, and coordinating the actions of the lance. While not as focused on combat as the MechWarriors the Commander still has to be a competent MechWarrior.

Scout – The scouts primary role is one of reconnaissance and finding targets for the MechWarriors. A secondary role is that of opportunistic attacks/harassing fire.

MechWarrior – The two main roles of the MechWarrior are that of attack and defense.

Tactics:

Maintain situational awareness. Keep communication channels clear, except to call out positions, and alert the commander of potential exploits and traps. Watch the others in your lance, and alert them to potential hazards. Provide covering fire for your lancemates. Try and draw the enemy out and keep them exposed, while trying to reduce your exposure and remained covered.

Attack the weakest Mech of the enemy lance, or look for an isolated member of the lance. If the enemy lance is good, attack the legs of one of the Mechs, and then try and reposition your lance drawing the remaining enemies away from the disabled Mech. Weakest could mean the most wounded, or the most isolated. If there is an Atlas far from its lancemates, try and take it out. If you can deny the opposing team of their scout then they will have to bring their support mechs in closer to target themselves. Taking out there commander will deny them of air support.

Once an enemy is wounded try and attack the same place on their Mech. Try aiming at their weapons to disable their weapons. If weapons are damaged on the enemy Mech try and position yourself to that side of the Mech. Try to be always moving when you are targeted.

When your team picks a target to attack try and stick with that target to bring it down unless there is a compelling reason to switch targets. Everyone should stay on the one target if possible, but don't lose track of the other enemy Mechs or of your surrounding.

Circle strafe in close combat to keep to the rear of your opponent. Circle strafing may be accomplished by torso twisting toward the Mech you are attacking, then constantly turning a circle as you move around the Mech. If you are the victim of circle strafing, then move your torso as far as you can toward the enemy Mech, and start a slow circle out toward the direction that your torso is facing. If you have lancemates in the vicinity, face your torso Perpendicular to your lancemate, so that you will not be between the enemy and your lancemate. Then walk generally to the side of your lancemate, so that if the enemy keeps themself to your back, your lancemate is facing their flank and as you pass your lancemate their back will be exposed. Tell your lancemate what you are doing by asking for a peel.

Training:

Do not underestimate practice. The best always get to be the best through perseverance and practice. Do not get discouraged by a couple of loses. Instead analyze what went wrong and work toward correcting mistakes in the future. If the game has something along the lines of skirmishes run them often against a variety of Mechs to find their strengths and weaknesses.

Terms:

Assault – Other than being a classification of Mech. Assault is a term used for direct attack. Specialized Assault Lances can be used to attack heavily fortified positions.

Battalion – Three Companies or Nine Lances or 36 Mechs. The Command Lance of the Command Company is led by a Lieutenant Colonel.

Brigade – Usually consist of three or more regiments.

Company – Three lances or Twelve Mechs. One of the lances will be a Command Lance led by a Major or Captain.

Division – Grouping of three Brigades, and support units.

Fire/Support – The role of fire/support is to stand away from the main action and rain down missiles, or other long range ordinance.

Lance – Group of 4 MechWarriors. The people in your lance are your lancemates. Typical make up is a Lance Commander, a Scout, and two additional MechWarriors.

Lancemates – The people in your lance.

Peel - Where one of your lancemates tries to stop an enemy Mech from being all over you.

Regiment – Usually consist of three to five Battalions.

Situational Awareness – Knowing where you are in relation to friendly units, enemy units, and being wary of terrain pitfalls.

NDA breach!!! Oh...wait...this is general discussion...

Dubiously eyes this guide to winning. Wonders about what games Belorion has been playing lately

Generally focused fire on the weakest opponent in the lance is the opposite of what you want to do

Since there is no cc taking out the weakest link would eliminate one of the threats quickly, Unless you can isolate one of the stronger opponents and take them out. The quicker you can turn the game from 4v4 to 4v3 the better.

Mostly I have been playing WoW, both arena and battleground on different level brackets. There are significant differences between the two games I relazise. MWO will be more damage in/damage out since there is no "healing". I played MechWarrior 4, actually been playing it some lately, Mech Commander2, the table top game...

eta: I don't mean the lightest. I mean the weakest. Sometimes this will mean the most damaged, or in the weakest position. Something you can kill quickly. If you can't kill it quickly then harrasse and evade.

1) If you can take out the scout, this denies the enemy intel.
2) Draw the enemy to ground of your choseing.
3) Focus fire on ONE mech at a time they will go down faster and stay down.
4) Never turn your back to the enemy this is your weakest spot.
5) Use the terrain to your advantage (See number 2)
6) Don't get tunnel vision, focusing on one mech, or your hud all the time will get you killed.
Theres more I'm sure.

3 Things:

Shoot

Move

Communicate

I'd say that last is the most important. And Communicate means being able to send info out to your lancemantes, and being able to listen to what your lancemates say. Amazing how many people don't realize communications are 2 way.

I would generalize this to 'situational awareness', but yes.

Make your opponent come to you. When out numbered run. If you enemy is hungry give him bait. If they are cautious make them brave. Beware of ensnaring and trapping terrain, use it to trap you enemies, but don't rush in yourself. An enemy that can't retreat will fight to the death.

Weaker is normally the flanker or faster Mechs. Getting rid of those pesky lil guys is important, and since they run up fast (using cover and concealment of course) getting rid of them while you are still sniping long range their wall of battle, is a good idea. Not in all cases, but not to be ignored.

Sit down and start game.

Have fun that is not at the direct expense of other players. (Shooting allies in the back on purpose, running off and abanoning your team, etc.)

If you had fun, you are a winner.

*** in the grass is certainly a prerequisit to winning, and personally I do not mind losing if it was a good fight.

Also remember that if your long range missile boat, and alpha strike will not help when they get too close to you. the LRMS will not arm and just bounce off.

Other than that lots of smart input already in this thread! but are the largest battles 12v12?

There is sure to be some confusion on the battlefield till everyone learns the maps, so try not to yell in your vent at your mates,
If your not the one actively on target get in to a position to help those that are!

constantly shifting your positions to throw your enemies attack plan into chaos,
avoid the circling unless you have them totally out numbered
draw fire to lure stronger opponents out of their positions when you have your mates waiting to flank them.
It takes team work but the VICTORY is so much sweeter as a team when a majority of your team is still alive (if not all ;) )
