it is possible for assaults to survive nascar. either through immediate withdraw to the center of the team (just dont point your back at the enemy), or to a good defensive position that you can hold till your team gets around the map. use lance chat, it can save your life and the rest of your lance as well.

The Executioner is pretty speedy but you're looking at only 25 tons of pod space to play with. 6 tons of that is hard locked heatsinks and 4 of it is for Masc, which can be pretty useful. If it had Endo instead of FF, it would have another 1.5 tons. It is what it is.
Maybe hold out for the Highlander IIC. That will have a pretty flexible loadout and a large Clan XL.

Not true.
You just have to play a bit smarter than the pug.
Pugs are predictable.... very predictabke on where they'll go, where they'll shoot from, where you can expect to see light flankers.
So when I play my DW I anticipate where the mob is going to be and head there preemptively. I don't try to play catchup on the last mech.
Go cross country, take that exposed shortcut early on cos the only thing that can ping you is a light and with its weapons they can only scratch your paint while waiting for their buddies.
Been playing assaults since CB and I rarely get caught by lights alone. When it happens, don't stop and fight. Mitigate the damage as best you can while still heading to the mob. Unless you're going in a nice straight line they won't kill you before you hit friendlies.
When the shooting happens don't stick around for that last shot. Gauge the mob mentality and start moving ahead before the mob does. More often than not they'll follow you. It doesn't mean charge forward all exposed, just move to the next cover point or firing position before the mob does.
Lastly never, ever complain to the team about your slow ass.
Edit - and I exclusively, 99% pug. Only time I've seen group queue was duo'ing with my brother and he quit a while back.

And my whole entire post was that it doesnt matter if they leave you if you play a bit smarter. Dont rely on them.
Assess and preemptively move to the next position. Use common sense to see where the pug would most likely be moving next.
Be aware of fights and make sure you're the first to move. If not that make sure you're not the last to move.
Ofc they'll leave the slowest behind. Just gotta think two steps ahead and anticipate what they'll do next. It's not hard with the limited number of maps we got.

Right so you're saying assault pilots should hold the line....
So you have covering fire while running away...
Gotcha

So run away to the team... that's faster than me and moving away from me.... but don't show my back to the enemy?

play to the strengths of the assault class. together they can put up a great defense. if your team is 2 clicks from your position before you have time to complain about it then forget them, talk to the other assaults and come up with a survival plan. this plan can include hiding, fighting, or heading off the team to rejoin.
if your plan involves throwing the other 3 mechs under the bus, then you only delay your death slightly. thats pug thinking.

you can turn your torso so that anyone following you hits an arm rather than your soft backside. even if you dont see anyone there, think about where they might be and do whatever you can to keep them from getting an easy kill. use cover to avoid giving away your position even if it takes a little longer to form up.
