Bitchin' Betty is the only improvement they ever made to audio.

I'm pretty sure they replaced all/most of the old sounds with the same update that fixed hitting the "sound channels cap" and thus hearing nothing for the rest of the game.

Have no idea if they are related, but I would imagine they did some major reworking to the sound engine to fix that and it's harder to change than just swapping out a sound file.

It would be nice if they allowed third party sound mods. It can be pretty sketchy but it would potentially take some work load off and potentially improve things.
