How about a petition to get a test server up and running with old code? I would download an old client shell to play it. I certainly recall more fun back in beta than what it is now.
But maybe history is a little blurred by time here.

They removed it because of framerate issues on older computers. I don't get it; why can't that be in graphics options?
they removed it because there was absolutely no reason not to use heatvision all day long. it was just too good.
the black camo Atlas DDC waiting in the woods 1500m away? no prob, use heatvision. it was stupid. and even nowadays heatvision is too good. i use it on nearly very map, despite the hot ones and alpine.

This is crystal clear vision. Watch those videos on the last page and see for yourself. the game was much MUCH more immersive in closed beta, no questions asked. PGI couldn't fix the game so they just cut features until it worked. They just ended up having to cut everything that made this unique\better than the old MW games. Hell, they cut some things that old MW games had, like IK.

^ This.
But, was disallowing heat vision on certain maps ever talked about? Or rather, only allowing heat vision on maps that actually are cold: Forest Colony Snow, Frozen City (+ Snow), Alpine, HPG, etc....
This would allow us players to actually fight and look around our terrain, rather than strapping our MAGICGOGGLES on when we land on Viridian Bog and scouring the screen for specks of bright white behind some leaves. Speaking of Viridian Bog, I wish they'd kept the fog we used to have, it really made it different. Pilots can't always choose their drop conditions.

so much worse than I thought
Wow, I knew that it looked way worse now, but seeing it next to each other ... I think MWO really is the only game on the market that's regressed graphically. And not only a bit, it's gone from "quite cool looking" to "2005 called, it wants its graphics back".
Someone should write an article on that.

Man...all the good memories.
it makes you wonder... what happened to the people who originally created MWO. And why today's PGI can not continue on their footsteps.
It seems like that a team created the skeleton on which MWO is based and then left. and its been 2 years the new PGI has been trying to analyze their work... ditching every aspect they could not figure out.

right?!?!?!
whoever was capable of crafting such an amazing pre-release product should be capable of crafting an even better POST-release product! right?!?
or at least maintain the same level of quality?!?
I must be on an island

This picture kinda makes me angry because everything is a washed out mess now. And the cause are stupid video filters and other questionable effects which makes this game uglier than it could be. I have a potent rig under my desk and MWO, while using pretty much of it's processing power, still suffers with low fps while looking worse over time. Have you seen the trees on the new CW map? Gross, absolutely gross. *shiver*
I don't really know if the engine is at fault but PGI should definitely do something about the performance. Sadly, graphics ain't mechpacks and don't bring money in so we won't see anything on those lines.

And for the veterans here, I've read the Lostech list, but I can't quite imagine how closed beta feels like. Does it feel like the somewhat whimsical and open-ended experience that videos show back then (particularly the older TheB33f videos), or does it have hints of the deathball laservomit/nascar meta that we have today?
PS. [Wrathful Scythe], your signature is +1 for me . . .

closed beta felt like the battletech game I always dreamed about. The slow pace of combat\damage combined with the collisions\knockdown and beautiful effects made me feel like I was piloting a mech. The current iteration of MWO feels floaty, fake, plastic, gamey, and cheap, in comparison. It's pathetic really.

MWO seems to go backwards. The game used to look and feel SOOOOO much better. Just look at the video that Khorn uploaded. It feels like mechs, not idiots in a robo-suit.
Please PGI, bring the old glory back to us.

One of the many reasons I wanted to grab PGI, pull it aside and ask "What the heck were you thinking!?"
Even the most basic research could have taught them this.
