Like MWO thats where this story starts.
Ebay and amazon are the best place to find these books, although haunting the local second hand bookshops doesnt hurt either, i picked up 20 titles at a local 2nd hand bookshop about 2 years ago.
And you can get E-copys too

^ That's the only MechWarrior novel I've found in local bookstores so it's the only one I read...But I really really liked it, despite some of it being pretty silly/stupid and being incredibly predictable. It's sort of like a popcorn thriller but I'm no book reviewer. Point is, it was very enjoyable to read as a fan.

Stackpole does have his cons though. Pretty much every book is geared towards a first reader, and there's only so many times you can read how a jump drive works.

They are slowly but surely releasing all the novels in Epub/Kindle format for purchase and pdf format (for free) for subscribers.
Drawbacks are the pdf versions are editions that were just before the final released books and Battlecorps itself is releasing stories very, very slowly compared to their earlier times.

Thats were you should start !
Its a great book... after you read it, you are hooked to the universe.
Gray Death Legion saga is awesome and its about a mercenary unit before the clans arrival. Precisely the setting for MWonline.
And its before the clan arrival. Reading stuff regarding the clans should be later. First you have to immerse in the Iner Sphere atmosfere.
And i recomend you download and read the free introductory PDF available on the battletech main site. They give you an insight into the factions and their motivations.
Download those 2 free Pdf for starters. Its an universe guide and a Short story compilation.

It's better than hunting down out of print books that either read like dry military history or embarrassing fan fiction.
