Maybe its my monitor or my gpu or god or the devil.

But I cannot see shi* on dark maps. Most of my builds are sniper builds. I rely on the advanced zoom module and I need to friggin see.

Using thermal vision or night vision is terrible. It is abysmal for sniping. Not using them at all is the only way to snipe but you basically cannot see what you shoot at.

It's been annoying ever since I started mwo. I don't understand why I am forced to play on maps where I simply cannot see. I cant see anything. Not enough to be even 1/1000 as effective as I am when I can goddamn see what's going on.

Each time I am forced to play on dark maps I cringe and think 'FU**'.

Just take those maps out of rotation or - for god's sake - let us finally choose the maps we wanne play in.

I have heard all the arguments and it still doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

And no matter how much you tinker with gamma or graphics the dark maps remain dark and miserable and I cannot friggin see. Cant see shiat.

This is the only thing that has kept me from playing quite often. The impossibility to choose maps or at least have a vote in lobby or the possibility to at least exclude some maps.

No, you have no influence on rotation whatsoever. Sometimes I get maps I hate (or cant see in) three times in a row.

Forest colony at night or river city at night are just no fun. And sometimes I get them three times in a row and then just stop playing. The last impression I got of the game in such a scenario (just happened) is so abysmal that I think about playing the following days but choose not to because those maps just suck.

Not being able to choose maps is the one major flaw of mwo. The one thing that annoyed me right from the start. The one thing that just destroys the fun for me every other game.

I just played alpine peaks and three !!! (yes three) ppl quit, each of them saying 'not this map,' or 'not again' or 'i just cannot do anything on this map with my loadout its useless.'

They just left the game.

We can customize everything in this game but when it comes to where to play we are forced to play the worst maps over and over again.

I would play right now. I wanne play right now. Id love to play in lets say canyon or mining or crimson. But I know ill prolly get river city night which simply is NO FUN FOR ME. So I dont play. :-/

And I dont understand why the devs simply refuse to give us even the tiniest tool to exclude a few maps. It just doesnt make any sense. And its hurting the game.

Those three guys just left and I am not playing right now cause I got one of the (for me) worst maps in exsistence (river city night) three times in a row. Where's the fun in that?

I swear to god, this is so annoying for me that i might rage-deinstall one day. Some maps just suck and I dont wanne play them. If that means I cannot play mwo at all then so be it. But i seriously had enough of that.

I've never had a problem on Factory (mining collective), as a matter of fact I believe that is by far the best map in the game.

River City Night on the other hand, there is a reason that is the most loathed map in the game. Just a culmination of being a shoebox you cannot see anything in. NO ONE likes river city night...

Hey, I never said anything about the factory. I love that map. I wanne play that map. I wanne run my robot around in that map cause its fun and it rocks. But I cannot just drop on that map in a pug game or cannot even give my vote in lobby to run that map.

I sit there thinking 'crap yeah, ill run my hellbringer in mining collective...that'll be a lot of goddamn fun.' Instead I get some weird terrible map. Long before mining or canyon or another cool map would come into rotation I prolly already stopped playing cause I had to play no fun maps again and again.

So my wish to rock on a cool map in an awesome mech is simply not possible.

Luv mining. Dont say I dont like it.

I hear ya, used to play every day for a few hours... now maybe once a week for a match or two. I had high-hopes for this game, but each week of disappointing patches gets me further and further from playing. I understand that you *should* design your builds for rounded game-play to prevent lop-sided mech configs (or steam-roller matches), but there is no reason why we can't choose a map when playing.

PGI is all about fitting into cannon, which I respect, but why would a mechwarrior attack a planet without planning for the battle. That's just reckless and dumb. I've recently started playing other games again, so thank you PGI. I'll keep patching my game every week in the hopes you guys realize what your customers want is simple to address - maybe I'll spend some money on WMO again? We will see (not holding my breath).

They used to have flair-launches in other MW games. They worked really well.

Yeah, it's stupid that you can't choose a mech suited for the map you are going to play on. You should be able to choose your mech's loadout AFTER the matchmaker has assigned you to a map.

Dwl...for some reason I am imagining a giant school boy table lamp, akwardly installed on top of the atlas, looking totally weird, illuminating everything. Then an urban mech comes along, shoots the awkward table lamp and the atlas says 'I CANNOT SEE SHIAT!'

* edit - im still laughing....

It's amazing that the the thermal and night vision of the future are worse that what we have today.

I'd like an Enhanced Imaging module that increased the maximum viewing range (i.e. see targets and terrain at longer distances) of thermal and heat vision.

I run balanced builds so I never have to worry about what map I drop on. I could do more damage and get more kills with meta builds, but those are just stupid broken and I refuse to run them. So I laugh at people complaining that they can't optimize their build for EVERY map, because that is not how it is supposed to work.

I want more dark maps. =3

Limited visibility -> shorter sightlines -> more dynamic play.

Imagine if Alpine were dark and you couldn't see shjt past 500m so an almost an entire team could pull off a flanking maneuver without getting spotted. We lose a lot of the possible tactics on Alpine because you can see mechs from completely across the map and it makes engagements very repetitive and boring.

My only gripe with dark maps is how taking fire or shooting weapons like PPC turn your screen dark for a couple second. It's a real dealbreaker in this aspect.

Once that is addressed, I can live with it.

night vision and TH vision ends at 600 meters or so.
a other reason why never use a long range build or PPC.

1. As Abisha commented, both "night vision" and thermal vision both end at ~600m, i.e. you can't see anything at all beyond that distance, no matter what you do.

2. Specialist sniping mechs are superb in CW, less so in other game modes.

3. Situation dictates the tactics & equipment, never the other way around.

  • MWO night vision is more primitive than 20th century night vision. As someone who used to be a gunner on a tank, I was really disappointed with how the MWO as a "simulation" game had about as advanced Night Vision as Doom 2.
  • MWO light settings at night actually make no sense at all because the optical illusions they use to create depth are not applied correctly. At day, when it's really bright outside, distant objects tend to look brighter. At night, when it's quite dark, distant objects are darker. In MWO, distant objects are always brighter, both at day and at night. So at night, objects look really dark up close, but look brighter from afar. Which makes no sense what so ever. You basically have to move further away from objects in order to see them better.
  • Night missions are fun when they add an element of uncertainty. On Tourmaline, a night mission would make infinitely more sense, because it would make scouting a lot more important. You wouldn't be able to see enemy movement outside radar range, so you would need to send scouts to locate the enemy. On River City night, a night mission doesn't really serve any purpose because you know where the enemy is, and due to the weird graphics (things are really dark up close), you just end up bumping into stuff when you're not using Night vision, but switching Night vision on means you can't see things that are far away. So ironically, you're using night vision to see stuff that's close and normal vision to see stuff that's far away. Makes zero sense.
  • When I saw Mining Collective in a preview video (where it was presented in daylight), I thought it was one of PGI's greatest maps to date. But that map just looks real bad as a night mission, because you've got red, blue, yellow and green flood lights to match the red, blue, yellow and green lasers. A good map should have a color theme, but this is something PGI map designers only rarely seem to consider.

I hate RCN, funny thing it likes me, has my highest W/L ratio of any map.
I have the same issue, past about 600m night vision just washes everything out using adv zoom, basically down to movement is all you have to work with.
What i have found works for me is to use night vision for traveling and when I position for sniping switch it off and work with the ambient light. There is enough unless your target is under ecm and in a shadow, even then if he shoots you have him.
Thermal is a bit better but is just flat out ugly to look at.

Yes, I absolutely agree, we should be able to know the map on to which we're about to drop, if only for a 60-90 second window inside of which you could select your mech. A bit like editing your CW drop deck but on a much shorter time scale.
