Private servers help us who are rather far from EU or US run servers. By giving us a decent ping to play the games at. Although I doubt there will be private servers I certainly would like to see them.

Did you know because of the distance us down here in South Africa get an average of +150 ping to EU servers and +200 to US servers? Just food for thought. And yes the gaming community here is pretty large. An example could be the 1300/500/600 man monthly lans in multiple different cities and the rAge expo we have yearly. The biggest yearly lan in the Southern Hemisphere.

I suppose everyone's knee-jerk 'no' reactions are coming from the thought that a private server must mean that it's running on the leasee's own box? Not necessarily.

This can still be done to achieve the same effect the poster wants without being a private 'dedicated' server. This will not affect cheating in any way, I imagine it will be the same as a public server without profile progression (XP/$$) and with a user set password and a simple map control interface. It will still be part of PGI's server farm and the user will have absolutely no control over anything aside from some game options, it's not like they will give users admin accounts so they can remote into the filesystem and wreak havoc XD.

How else can units/clans/guilds organize team events, practices, trials etc without their own space? Actually I would be very surprised if PGI doesn't take advantage of this. Tribes Ascend implements a similar framework, and from reading the MWO faction details it's almost an implied feature... It's not really a big deal to me at all, but from a technical standpoint it should be completely doable, h4x have no bearing on it.

I was hoping someone would bring up the Tribes Ascend style of developer owned & rented servers. Gives players the ability to have private servers for tournaments or just mucking around with friends, while also controlling the server end and preventing server hacks. It even helps the devs get some more money. In TA you can even gain xp etc. now so long as certain conditions are met (like number of players in the game).

Just play your private matches on the Piranha servers. They've said in "community warfare" that you'll be able to set up things like guild vs guild matches. You'll already be able to queue with friends that you want or set matches if you want to fight a certain group of players. You don't need private servers.
