Press R R R

There used to be an interesting whine thread about people intentionally NOT hitting R for hating LRM boats... but that's just a bad minority. The general population that doesn't use R are ones that weren't aware of it in the first place.
It's sad.

...or I guess that's the reasoning for those who know what R does but still won't use it.
Me, I use R almost as much as WSAD in a match. I need to know where to shoot my opponent, I need to inform my team mates that I'm facing not one but three enemies, I need to get some LRM support on this assault I'm staring down in my Commando... Or on the light that's chasing my rear... And so on and so forth.
It's a team game. Press R for the Win. Your stats will thank you for it in the long run.

Auto targeting is probably the best way to get the locks. If you shoot a target it should try to lock it, not just when in melee range.

I'm not fond of the autotarget unless we can disable it or override it. If I'm holding a lock for a LRM boat on charlie and someone calls out red st on alpha, I'm near alpha, I won't retarget, I'll just pop shots as they present, I know where it's weak.
And there are times when as a scout, hitting R on what you are looking is a bad ideal. You DO get notified visually and audibly whenever you get targeted after all. Most people have no clue that that's there but some of us do.

Contribute your armor HP to fight. If you are firing from farther than 500m, you are likely doing it wrong and spamming terrain/obstacles.
Truth of the matter, often times we have our hands full fighting, we ain't going to take the time to press R when we need to be using our fingers to fight for our lives. We'll get to pushing R when we can...but if you were 300m behind me, you'd be able to lock my targets yourself. In addition, you'd have better hit success/improved effectiveness due to more informed shots and significantly lower flight times to target.

I run a LRM boat from time to time and I never request the team hold locks.I prefer to engage line-of-sight when possible and I'll get locks myself.

We still won. But we were very sad.
Lancemates don't let their lancemates ignore R.....

Had a match two days ago, where I caught a lonely stalker made him (h)armless and told over voice to leave him alone because of that.
Sure enough four of our mechs leave the main group just get the kill while ignoring the enemy pounding our flank.

It's a stupid system, but we are use to bad implementation in MWO and just deal with it.

I strongly believe it is the auto targetter that has made everyone so damn lazy the R key: Remove it, and see how the game flows …

If there are LRM users (yes, there also are people who don't boat them) on the team, why would you make them useless?
I guess these are the the same people who leave assault mechs behind.
And not knowing the weakened spots of an opponent, is just stupid.
I've seen so many players shoot the undamaged legs of a mech with deep red CT and vice versa...it's sad.
I mean, are you really concerned that someone steals your kill?
It's far easier to steal kills with direct fire weapons.
What's the deal of not knowing anything about the opposing mech and not giving your team tactical information?
Imho, NOT using the "R" is just stupid.

No.
You get a warning when someone shoots missiles at you, but not if someone targets, tags or narcs you.
They took out the "You're being targetted." part from BB.

Yes, I know what you mean.
I've seen so many matches lost because the last remaining mechs were trying to kill a weaponless mech while another opponent just stood there and picked them appart one after another...

No, I've read somewhere... that short little beep you get that sounds like small bird tweet? That's someone locking on you. I don't remember the visual cue. And haven't confirmed it.
I've done long range scouting with ECM and had enemy mechs key in on me when I lock them. Early in my time here when I still carried BAP and Adv Sensor Range (not anymore, is a waste of a mod slot). Pretty sure it was the lock signal that alerted them, because I went unnoticed until I hit R.
Maybe someone who knows can go into more detail?
