I consider myself primarily an inner sphere pilot but I recently decided to pick up couple of clan mechs. I did play around in some of the trial mechs when I first started but, I wasn't impressed because I spent more time overheating then fighting. So, I've been a little skeptical of jumping on the clan technology wagon even though the first few MechWarrior games featured it prominently.

Since the clan reinforcements are on sale, I picked up a Timberwolf-D. As soon as I took it into the Training Grounds I realized I was going to have heat problems. I went to the mech lab and made a couple of changes to suit my playstyle. I'm not a big fan of ER PPCs due to the enormous amount of heat they generate. I swapped the PPCs for ER large lasers and the ER small for a medium pulse laser. I added an active probe and filled the excess tonnage was filled with streak ammo. After test run in the Training Grounds I was ready for a trial by fire. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much more than catching some ECM lights off guard but ... holy crap! This thing is a monster!

As long as the streaks are kept on chain fire it is fairly heat efficient and dishes out damage like a boss. Granted, the mech does 90% of the work. All I have to do is get a target lock, fire the SSRM-6s in sequence, and follow up with the lasers. It doesn't require a whole lot of skill, but it sure is fun. Between the active probe and 24 streak missiles, it is a light mech's worst nightmare. It's a great brawler and can quickly take down just about any other mech in missile range consistently. In about an hour of play I picked up 16 kills (6 in one game) and averaged about 700+ damage per game. I only got killed once and that's because I tried to fight a sniper duel on Tourmaline instead of closing with the enemy.

I haven't figured out how to post the build from Smurfy's site but I'm very pleased with it's performance. Not ready to give up on my IS mechs though ...

I've found the best way to use the "D" is to use the side torso pods, since they do not have the obnoxiously anchored Jump Jets, but still two Missile hard points.

So, i run
Prime arms for x4 lasers, for mobility in combat.
x4 srm 6's with Artemis for punch.

Stil have a jump jet locked in the CT, so you can use that to get over obsticles and spread damage, but the extra tonnage saved gives you artemis on the srms.

Now. Streaks.. I originally ran this with them, but they have one flaw. you have to look at the target to stay locked, making it les than ideal as a brawler. Paired with the damage spreading of Streaks, and I eventually found SRMs just to be more efficient.

To get builds from Smurfys, click the button along the top banner that reads, "Save and Share Loadout"
Then copy-paste the plaintext link wherever you like it.

The build I mentioned above for example.

I can definitely see value for streaks - clan streaks specifically - but I think they're more effective on a mech with greater mobility. There's a reason we see streakcrows; the speed is enough that if you need to chase a light to get in those hits you can, while still having a hell of an alpha against heavier mechs. The thing is though that while the Timber has good mobility for a heavy as far as speed, it doesn't twist so fast. And so for streaks you'll need to keep that lock if you're brawling, and the 'Crow can twist so quickly that you'll pretty much always be able to keep your lock. Timbers on the other hand seem to be suited more to direct fire without needing that lock, and so streaks are less effective.
