As if punkbuster protects against cheating.

The only thing punkbuster is effective at is ******* off gamers who don't cheat.
  • Random server kicks because their software fails.
  • Random bans because their software fails.
  • Random game crashes because their software fails.
  • Older versions used to have memory leak issues turning it into a memory hog.
  • The inability to join some servers just because punkbuster doesn't like your face.
  • Customer support.. wait, what customer support? You can contact them with an issue and they'll tell you stop crying and stop cheating. Even if you contacted them for something completely different.
  • Punkbuster used to think the Steam ingame overlay was a hack and banned / kicked you for it.
  • No automatic updating.
  • Tendency to install ever-running processes on your PC that continue running even if no game is running and you just booted.
I could go on for ages about this piece of cow #####.

And you know what's ironic? Every game 'protected' by punkbuster has tons of cheaters on their server.
I'd almost start to think they're permitting it so they don't run out of business.

So yeah.. Have I mentioned I hate punkbuster?

LOL Come on now, don't be coy, tell us how you *really* feel. :)

Client Side hit detection is usually the most favorable way to deal with things. The reason it is used, mostly in FPS games is obvious. The only other sane alternative would be to have server side hit detection with a Quake-like delay in your shots, but that could spell disaster for those with slower connections or those who live in far off places.

I think Client Side hit detection is the best option. Aim Bots are always an issue regardless of how you work with things. Just look at Quake Live. It's an older, server side netcode and Aim Bots thrive. It's easy as hell to predict latency.

Punkbuster, wait that does something? I never recalled it ever doing anything useful. It always seemed to be place din games to make the multiplayer a little worse.

There's no greater compliment than being called a hacker when you're not. Funnily enough the times I've been called that I've often thought my aiming was crap because of all the missed shots that they apparently didn't notice. :)

Devs will not discuss their plans with us, and I also hope its not Punkbuster. Near as I can tell its like DRM on video games, in that it sometimes causes problems for legitimate users and not much else from what I've seen. While I prefer a game to have server side detection it's not infallable; The Hack just needs to be able to offer prediction algorithms and intercept packets so the game files aren't modified. That will make it more difficult to code which might reduce the number they have to detect, so worth doing just for that.

A report system can augment software detection but it needs to factor other things into account. Some people just report people they don't like, or think are cheating who actually aren't. It won't be a report=autoban, but an account that develops a trend of being reported could be flagged for monitoring. If someone reports a flagged account a PGI rep should be able to watch them or review a replay of the game. Abusers of the system should lose the right to use it, perhaps in exponential measure. 1 day ban the first time, then a week, a month, forever.

Yeah, no Punkbuster please. That program is junk junk junk. I sometimes would get a little lag spike when reaching servers across the ocean and bam, kicked from server by that trash.

"Aimbots" don't have to shoot the head, all they have to do it lockon dead center in the target box or track center torso mass so lasers keep hitting that same spot. Only way to spread damage around would be to turn your torso and make it hit your arms or something. Just play mechwarrior 4 at higher difficulty the enemy units even those uhm hover vehicles will hit your center torso dead on almost all the time leaving the rest of the mech pretty much unscathed.

Can honestly say I'm completely in the dark when it comes to aimbotting. My 1st time hearing about something like that. As for hitbox skins I kind of agree with the others. Seasoned mech pilots, the ones who've played for years already know where the critical areas to aim are. Besides if someone has taken critical damage then that becomes the spot to aim at. And I just can't help but feel that players that resort to actually reskinning muchs with hitboxes are the kinds of players who if they can't exploit the game somehow that they generally lose interest in that game.

My experience with the last 2 days of open beta is 80% instand death through heatshots! There are aimbots on the field and they work!!! When a Jenner with 130 kph comes around a corner and headshoots me once, that's ok. But constantly, it grows annoying very fast. :)
Also being killed by headshots over maximum distances with ppc or gauss fire may be possible, but the amount of instances where this actually happens is paramount atm!
There must be something done about this!
Randomizing the hits would be a very good measure anyway!

I doubt it. You are the classic definition of "that guy". You know, the one who is bad@games and starts whining when he loses.

What mech are you playing? Are you in an atlas? Do you just stand around being an easy target? You know, there are people out there with incredible hand/eye coordination, and hitting an immobile target is not all that hard.

You can also turn your torso to present them your arms/shoulders. This will spread the damage over your whole armor.

Being headshoted by a gaussapult can happen, esp if you just stand around and let him try 2 or 3 times. When a gaussapult tries to shoot you, just ******* MOVE and get cover. Stop being bad@robots.

nah

Please try describing the way you play, the mechs you use and so on a bit more. I think we may be able to help you.

Devs won't discuss their security measures. I'm sure they have something in store for cheaters and hackers.

they don't want to tell us now but mechwarrior online excretes a powerful nerve toxin and they activate it if someone is found to be a cheater.

Unlike previous MechWarrior games, this one will be entirely hosted on a company controlled server. This should allow them to track and ban cheaters pretty easy.

This type of grouping also allows people to report each other for such offenses.

I think we'll be ok.

This doesn't stop aimbots or hitbox skins.

It does help with the vast majority of other possible hacks though.

Just realized you only meant for reporting.

In all my months of playing, I have only seen one obvious aimbot. I was in a Jenner running full speed between buildings and got headshotted from across the map. Then several teammates were headshotted in a short time in the same circumstances. One time is pretty good. Most of the time when I am headshotted, it is in an Atlas, which is asking for that.

In the last two days I have noticed an increase on players using aimbots. Sucks when you start to spectate and happen to see 2 of your teammates targeting reticles snapping to arms legs and joints. It is a shame I now need to fraps and start reporting these users. What a waste.... all those using aimbots have no honor,... Grow up and learn to pilot.

i just got oneshotkilled by a gausspult.
i ran in my dragon around a corner on forest noticing a gausspult 50m off, i am 81km fast moving transversal he notice me and turn his torso towards me, hes slow 15-20km i guess, he shoots onetime without stoping his mech or torsomovement. out of this movement with a single volley he kills my cockpit and i fell over dieing..no scratches anywhere on my mech, both gaussguns hitted exactly the cockpithitbox only. this is beyond human abilitys.

in WoT there is more than Aimbots, there were visual hacks to remove all foliage and make tanks looks like glowing clowns so skins were negated... shaders and recticules to tell you exactally hown your shell will land and lead points... not to mention living stats on players displayed in game with predictive win/loss %

even with all that i could usually hold my own very well...

The main issue MWO could have is aimbotting, so this is terrfying... with WoT and Hawken and games of that ilk the devs could record a patch as a demo by capturing clients packet data and replaying it by rednering there view point though the engine, by capturing all recived and sent packets you have the entire match and the file is crazy small... were talking half a megabyte so... the devs have tools to find catch and destroy you, and i hope they do...

on a side note does MWO have the Alpha Strike ability?

Heads have 33 Health when fully armored.

Dual Gauss deals 30dmg
3 PPCs deal 30dmg
AC20 deals 20.

None of those listed above can 1-shot you (when fully armored). You'll have a beet-red head health indicator, but you'll be alive unless you store ammo in your head.

A Jenner would have to carry 4 Medium Pulse Lasers and 2 Medium Lasers and hit you perfectly with every ounce of energy to 1-shot you... while running full speed... all in the head. Either that, or they would have to hit you with a perfect SRM4 blast followed by 4 Medium Lasers without a single missile or laser flicker missing your Head Hitbox.

You can put an ERPPC on a Gauss Cat, I've seen that, and you can run 4(ER)PPCs, or dual AC/20's.. and other ways.

If you would like to report what you believe to be cheating behavior, then you can send an email to support@mwomercs.com with a full description of what happened including the names of players and Mechs involved, the time/date of the match, the map, and [if possible] a screenshot of the illicit behavior. Suspected cheating can be sent there, to support, but if you would like to report "confirmed" cases of hacking (as in reporting someone who clamed to hack the game or someone posting hacking instructions) then please send an email to support@mwomercs.com and the Support specialists there will handle it.

The Support Team is the only group that can handle reports of in-game behavior or perform administrative actions on peoples' game accounts.

I'm moving this to Off Topic for now, since it's not a discussion about MW:O gameplay - it's about game security measures and modern internet gameplay. Be careful to not discuss cheating in MW:O, though, or it will be locked and reports may be filed.

And a subsequent proof it doesn't work due to netcode issues.

The game is server-sided and you can only make a clientside aimbot, thus he can't hit that Raven at all.

1. 81kph is slow, not fast.
2. twin gauss can't one shot a clean cockpit.
