Also.

DHS in this game are funny. You get one free per 25 points of rating in your engine up to 10, and can slot more into your engine for each 25 points past 250, so a 300 rated engine has 10 built in DHS and 2 free slots for more that won't use critical slots in your mech.

The gotcha here is that the free ones in your engine are "Trudubs", that is, they add 2 heat capacity and dissipate .2 heat per second from your mech. All other DHS you add are 1.4 heat capacity and .14 HPS dissipation. This sounds ridiculous (and it is) but be aware that pilot skills add extra heat dissipation, so for most builds (those around 18DHS total) you'll end up with them all functioning as if they were 2.0.

This is important to understand, though, because a 250 rated engine with it's 10 internal "free" DHS will give you a higher heat capacity and dissipation rate than a 225 rated engine and one extra DHS (to bring you up to the required 10) because the external DHS will be a 1.4 DHS instead of 2.0.

And, for clarity: A 300 rated engine with two extra DHS filling it's internal slots has 10 at 2.0 and 2 at 1.4 - only up to the 10 included DHS actually function at 2.0.

Hmm, interesting. I'll make sure to keep that in mind. So far I'm not having too much heat trouble while piloting the trial Hellbringer, so hopefully that's a good sign. This is the last post I can make till this evening since I'm still new, but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has posted so far. I really appreciate it!

Yeah, that's not really going to cause heat issues (and is irrelevant in Clan mechs, as you can't change their engines anyways) but it's a good thing to understand as far as overall MWO mechanics goes. At least, for future use when building mechs.

Premium time applies to the cadet bonus as well, pushing that 8m cbills to 12m cbills, assuming you play all 25 matches in that one day.

really? pity i didnt know it

but how, isn't the cadet bonus coded like separate achievement rewards, does the premium time apply to c-bill achievement rewards? i don't recall that when i was on my cadet bonus the game told me that i could earn so much with the premium time too...

Ah, I hadn't considered the changes to achievements. You wouldn't get the premium bonus on it anymore. My mistake, I've been around a while ;)

So far so good! Still really enjoying the game and having a blast with the trial mechs. I honestly haven't had this much fun while playing a game since Dark Souls II came out for PC.

It becomes more fun once you start to own mechs. They perform much better from the 2X basic bonus after completing elite tier skills.

Skills example : complete 3 hunchback basic tier skills - unlock elite tier skills. Complete any 3 medium mech elite tier skills - unlock master tier skill for all mediums.

In short: LRM's can seem crazy at first, but this is absolutely a L2P matter. People hate to admit this, because being killed via LRM's regularly means you're not as good a player as you may want to believe, but that's the reality of it.

True,im LRM user and one guy in this forums said in other words that im noob to use LRM and the LRM can be beated with AMS,but im IS mech user,so IS LRM can hit the enemy mech whatever if have AMS.

To OP: LRM mechs are very useful support mechs, but if u only have LRM in ur weaponery, forgot to kill anything in close quarters battle. There is advantages and disadvantages.

You forget to tell them if opposition has ecm cover the whole match you can't do anything with lrms.

That's not entirely true. If you can target them (via UAV), then it just takes twice as long to get a tone-lock. After that, you can use LRMs to strip armor from several locations at once. LRMs are also extremely good for racking up component hits, because each missile does so little damage, but a hit on a component destroys it. Higher damage weapons can destroy the location outright, so there is less time to take out the components therein.

LRMs are primarily support weapons, and are best used against enemies that are already being engaged by someone else.

Just an update. Finally got into my Timberwolf today and I'm having a blast. Averaging 600-800 damage per match. I ended up going with quad ER Medium Lasers and quad SRM6 w/ Artemis. Absolutely loving it.

Hi everyone!

As the title says, I'm new to MWO, but I'm not new to the Mechwarrior games. I played Mechwarrior 2 a long, long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) when I was a kid, and more recently have played the Mechcommander games and have begun getting into the tabletop game as well, having bought the newest box set.

Anyhow, enough with that. I do have a few questions about the game that I figured I'd ask while I was fooling around on here. I'm currently about to start my "training" games.

1) I'm most interested in medium range and brawling type engagements. What is your personal favorite chassis for those ranges, and why? Feel free to give tips on loadouts and builds, too!

2) Is it worth saving up for a Clan chassis? The MWO rendition of the Timberwolf is gorgeous, so I've been thinking of saving up for one while I was looking at the game.

3) I was going over some videos on YouTube and happened across one of a Stalker with six PPC's. Is that... a normal thing to see?

4) Another question related to a YouTube video I found the other day. Are LRM's still as incredible powerful as what I saw in that video? It was rather old, but the games basically looked like one big game of rocket tag.

Other than that, I can't really think of anything else. Feel free to add me in game if you'd like. I'm planning on getting a headset soon (or at least, Blizzard Soon).

Your story is a common one around these parts, so know you're with kindred spirits here!
  • For mid-range brawling I'm a big fan of lb-x, ultra ac, pulse lasers and streaks. My favourite IS build is the Atlas-D-DC, I throw a bunch of pulse lasers on that guy but I keep the AC-20 installed. For the Clans, I enjoy the Hellbringer B variant: I modify the loadout & omnipods to carry 1 LB20-X, 2x SRM6 + Artemis, 2x MPL, 3x ERSL, & ECM.
  • Some people call the Clans OP while others call them nerfed, but the Clans are totally worth buying into for the aesthetics alone (imo). They are much more expensive though, so as a new player you may want to start with upgrading some IS chassis, or possibly limit yourself to Light & Medium-class Clan chassis. The TBR-A variant is currently all the rage, but you have to wait 'till June unless you don't mind purchasing w/ real cash in the Gift Shop.
  • The 6x PPC Stalker is a relic, back before Ghost Heat was vamped up. The current Stalker trend is a laser build. I'm not familiar with the specifics as I've focused mainly on Clans for the last year (that's another thing about this game: it's hard to invest heavily both in IStech and Clan Omnitech unless you are a hardcore 5+ hours per day gamer and/or have a heavy wallet), but what I can tell you is that many Clanners are fearful/outraged by it, and that's saying something.
  • The lrm arms race is also a thing of the past. Nowadays, most pilots look down on lrms with disdain. They aren't useless mind you, and in the right hands (heavy emphasis on right hands) they can be deadly. If you were simply just deterred by the lrm fiesta, however, know that now there's a fairly good mix of weaponry being played... in comparison to 'those days'... (shudder)
Guess that covers all your questions, but one more thing to add, the Community Warfare feature of this game is still in BETA. There's a really mixed rating on it among players, but you should still give it a shot. There's also a big event going on currently, so the gameplay right now does not accurately reflect what it has been. So don't let anybody deter you from it, just give it a try.

:) Cya on the battlefield!
