I'm guessing some rubber banding action, where the game put both mechs in the same spot for some portion of the burst, and both were low enough health to die from a partial burn.
Cool video - one for the "ok, so this one time..." books.

You killed the mech with half your alpha. Dead mechs dont take damage. The rest of your alpha went into your buddy. I have seen this a lot actually. A group of people shooting a mech. once the mech dies their weapons fire passes right through it and into what ever is on the other side.

He must have been very very close to death because your pulses, passing through the enemy, instantly killed him.

If I had to guess. MWO recognizes deaths after the client sends the message to the server that you are dead.
So if the teammate was closer to the server than the guy he killed, this would be possible.

I got a double kill with a single AC10 round once. I fired a kill shot at an enemy Atlas, only for a friendly Raven to run in the way and take the hit to his rear CT. It blew him up and kept going, finishing off the Atlas.
Frankly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
