you underestimate machine guns, 4 machine guns have a higher dps than a gauss rifle (0.8*4=3.2 vs 3.16) and on top of that they have a very good crit chance against the structure

also why do you call the original poster 'it' -_-

I said `machine gun` in singular,please read again.

It depends on what Mechs have been released. Recently, there was a huge spike in the Light population due to the release of the Urban Mech. Since then, my queues have been pretty equal, with each weight class represented as being over 20%.

Normally though, Mediums and Heavies are the most popular, roughing tying to the highest percentage, with Assaults trailing along in the lower 20s. Lights usually have 10% or less. It's not that Lights are hated on by players so much as a lot of the players in this game do not have the skill necessary to pilot them. Also, since you're a newbie, you won't see as many Lights anyways; they are the least friendly newbie Mech in the game due to their fragility. As you progress, increase your elo, and exit the Cadet games, you will begin to see better balancing.

Yes, 3/3/3/3 is active in the game but it is not hard locked. In other words, the Matchmaker will do its best to fill 3/3/3/3 within reason. If there aren't enough Mechs of each weight class available to satisfy the rule, then it will use the next best Mech to do so. For pre-made groups, the 3/3/3/3 always applies though.

Hope you still visit this thread ACRaven. I understand that you didn't like facing the same enemy mechs over and over.
I assume you don't want to follow in their footsteps and use the same mech configurations which you find in the Meta.

I cannot change the enemy you face, but i can show you how to not get slaughtered without using Meta tactics/mech builds.

A guide i made. It's a big textwall but it's filled with a decent amount of details to get you started.
Non Meta Light Mech Tactics Guide.

Understand this....These tactics is not for everyone. Some adapt to it while others don't.
As you try figuring out where the most popular travel routes are on each map you will die a lot while adapting to these tactics.
I paid a hefty price in getting killed over and over till i figured all this out about 2 years ago. I still have disaster matches though.

Next is Smurfy. Use it before buying mechs and remember that a mech is not just all about the the quirks, weapon hardpoints and their locations.
It is also about how far can a mech twist it's torso and arms to the sides as well as downwards.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...echlab#modified

Finally. Get used to having your arms unlocked if you haven't allready.
It gives you an advantage in uneven terrain, close combat and faster response times with your arm mounted weapons.
You can unlock them in the settings.
One guy i meet on these forums keeps them locked, but presses left shift to unlock them temporarily though...it's all about what suits you.

I am, at best, a "fair" Light pilot. I enjoy running my Ravens as a change from Thunderbolts. But they are not usually my first choice for a match. Being a dedicated and good Light pilot requires a differant attitude than I generally have.

Best game I have had in my Ravens was; a 700 damage, 4 kill night. I also took less than 10% damage in that match. Running a Raven 2X with 3x LL and leg sniping opponents engaged with my heavier teammates.

Next match, I came around a corner to find a King Crab with an ECM friend only inches away. I did not get a shot off in that match.

You have some good matches and some bad ones. Does not matter what Mech you play.

When I first started playing MW:O, I thought I wanted to pilot fast Lights. I learned that I have a tendancy to run to the fight and stand in the firing line trading shots with opponents.

To me; Heavys and Mediums are more suited to my playstyle. Lights can not take the damage (but are fun on occassion) and Assaults are too slow.

ACRaven; take your time, use the Trial Mechs and determine what suites you. The Trail builds may not be the best setups, but they could be alot worse. Try them all, you might be suprised what actually "feels right" to you.

My favorite mech to date has to be my Spider 5D with 3 mplas. I have just over 4700 drops in this, and it never gets old. I will say this though, I look for lone snipers and lrm boats because I know that in this mech I have the advantage.

Also, having that many drops in a light (BTW, I have all of the IS lights mastered) you really get to know the maps very, very well. So, there aren't a lot of hiding places that an experienced light driver doesn't know about.

Many players want the big damage mechs and lights typically can't mount those weapons, or a lot of them. So you will generally see fewer lights in drops. The exception is whenever PGI releases a new mech (reference the Urbie). Then the light numbers will increase until enough people get over the novelty.

If you enjoy driving lights, stick with them. I know that I get a LOT of invites to games because people really appreciate a light driver that actually spots, locks, and calls out targets and enemy movements.
