We've seen with overwhelming interest in various other threads that the MWO community wants new 'mechs to be released as the DLC that will keep this game running. However, downloadable mechs sort of implies that not every 'mech available in a given era are included in the core product.

With that said, when MWO releases the core product, which mechs (Or which kinds of 'mechs) should be DLC only, and which ones should be available for free?

The, the game itself shall be free, paying should only get you things which you can also aquire through playing faster. As soon as the game is not fully playable (or simply imbalanced) in its free to play variant, it will be dead (See pay to win).

The maximum of which i would be OK with, would be players being able to "buy" clantech rather early on. But even then one should not be able to spend 200 EUR and by a clanmech or fully equip your IS-Mech with clantech on the first day of the invasion. (See pay to win)

I hope none will be DLC. DLC now is like the same idea as the Mechwarrior 4 Mech Packs in which the game data is already in the game but you need a simple code to access it and those who don't pay for the code will be under advantaged then those who do pay for the code. No, I hope new mechs are brought in to this game through the patches since this will be a MMO and f2p. That updates may bring new content such as weapon systems, maps, and mechs. No mechs should not be DLC but rather just implemented later on as new content.

Although I agree with AJC's idea, I don't see it happening. I would however pay to have a true 3025 Battlemaster.

No DLC. They can find other ways to make money.

DLC is a content ripped from game to squeeze the money out of it. Nothing makes you upset more than paying 75€ (a lot of money) just to get message you have to pay additional 20€ to complete the game. :)

Not sure that it falls in DLC, but more that I'd like to see a regular introduction of 'Mechs on a weekly or biweekly basis. Along with a rotating stable of free to play 'Mechs, that can then be purchased after you've had a chance to try them out. This way new players can try a variety of 'Mechs before having to drop their hard earned C-bills, and vets can try out new 'Mechs that may not already be in their personal stable.

Wait - who is saying that they WANT to have to pay for mechs? Are they mad?

DLC is a way for game developers to get us to pay for stuff that should already be in the game. It's far FAR too common nowadays. In fact I sometimes hold off buying games (like Oblivion and Fallout New Vegas for instance) because I know that there will eventually be a "GOTY" or "Complete" edition of a game down the road that includes all the DLC.

Now, that being said, the nature of this game raises certain questions. I mean it's not going to be a MMORPG. It's basically going to be Battlefield: Inner Sphere 3049 right, except with just mechs and no vehicles or aircraft? Actually that makes it more like Call of Duty doesn't it (hopefully sans homophobic 10-year olds)?

If I bought a shooter game for instance, and the devs started offering more powerful weapons or more powerful vehicles to buy as DLC I'd quit the game right then and there. That right there is the very definition of pay to win.

I don't believe for a second that people would prefer to have to buy their mechs. Do you think they'd sell the CGR-1A1 Charger mech as DLC? The BNC-3E Banshee? Who would buy it? No - they would offer only the more powerful mechs or mech varients or mech weapons as DLC. "Download your Heavy Gauss for only $10!!!!".

No. Thank. You. You can take your Pay-To-Win and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Edit: Now, official expansions that actually expand the boundaries of the game in a meaningful way I could get behind - like adding vehicles or aircraft/aerospace to the game. And, of course, vanity items like paint skins/camo and that crap (stuff that has no actual in-game impact) I can understand as DLC - and if people want to waste money on that stuff go right ahead. I'm just totally against pay-to-win.

i agree no mech should be DLC, i would however like to see maybe a style pack, like "Classic Battlemechs", it woudnt change gameplay, only the way that they looked. i think that might be interesting thing to look at later on in MWO life.

EDIT: Wait what? How did I not see Kodiak's post?

y u no hivemind me earlier?

-----

I wouldn't mind if Premium content consisted of alternative versions of mechs in the game. For those who prefer the classic designs of mechs, we put down a few bucks or so for one. Considering that classic mechs tended to be more simplistic in design, I'd think that would be both profitable and pleasing to the fanbase.

It should be up to others if they want to download the extra models though. If they don't, the premium classic mechs appear like normal MWO ones, but perform just the same. If they do, then they can't use them but get to see them. Sound good?

We should have to pay for everything --- why anyone expects someone else to pay out a huge sum of money only for them to consume it for free is just beyond me. I know I won't be paying for a sticker or new paint job for my mech --- I'd rather do that work myself.

Why do people expect stuff for free? Damn... Pay your way!

So the size of your bank account should equate the your effectiveness on the battlefield...that's um well that's just ludicrous. Let's throw all sense of fair play out the window. The devs CHOSE to go f2p. The specifically are making the decision to not sell tactical advantages.

Absolutely no mechs should be DLC. That just makes it unfair. I am disappointed in you. Also DLC maps... that would be even worse.

I wouldn't be comfortable with this option. I mean it is supposedly free to play and if you pay its for something that isn't a tactical advantage.

I don't think the concept of DLC really applies to free to play games, since all new content is rolled out into the game at will. Of course you may have to either buy or earn the in game credits to use the new content when it comes, but the similarities end there.

I think the OP was using DLC to mean the same as new content. Not necessarily paid for DLC.

Yeah, no content that provides a tactical advantage should be pay only. Everyone should have equal access to any new content that provides tactical advantages, or limits gameplay options to those who cannot get paid for content.
