And before anyone says its an online game it cant be hacked, Warthunder claimed that and that's been hacked and they have now admitted it.

A cata has 84pts of armor in the CT and 42 Internal structure (+quirks). Ofc a light can get through there in 6 salvos, as long as he has a 22pt alpha (a firestarter gets around 30). Seems more like you are trying to excuse your terrible piloting, if he actually managed to hit CT with every salvo. What was it, did he catch your lrm-boat?

So as to hacks I do not know but I do know its possible for a light to take out mediums to assualts without help.

Packet hacking for anything else (damage, location and so forth) would be incredibly difficult because the server is matching the packet transfers from 24 clients.

^^ Truth.
OP, if your CT/ST was "one-shotted" by a light that would be one thing. Six shots.... I'm surprised you weren't dead faster. The light pilot wasn't hacking.

In general, lights are capable of taking on just about anything here as long as they are properly positioned and configured. Many of these light builds rely on XL engines (will die if you destroy a side torso), and run hot (will limit their engagement time and/or make them shutdown). Try to take advantage of this by sticking with your team to maximize your return fire to the enemy and force him to disengage and aim for the side torso (left/right side of the center mass) to potentially kill them faster. If the light is too fast to hit reliably, try aiming for the hips of the mech. This will allow you to hit the legs of lights (a legged light is a dead light 99.9% of the time), or hit their CT.
Seeing that you are using a Catapult A1, it would be good to know what weapons you are using. This mech in particular has issues with lights because it does not have any energy of ballistic slots. Streak missiles are great against lights, but they suck against just about everything else. LRM's have a min range that will make you meat for any brawler light. SRM's have an unreliable hitreg track record and are slow +non tracking; making them difficult to use against fast targets.
Hope this helps!
(PS: This is coming from a primarily light pilot. These tips are both general observations on how light pilots play and general knowledge on how the game plays.)

As far as hacks being widespread, nether myself nor any of my friends (to the best of my knowledge) use them. It's simply a matter of experience.
Depending on your loadout, if it's a splatcat (all srms) you should have been able to take him out. If you only have lrms, maybe swap some out for either srm6s or streaks, and make sure to load a BAP. Other than that, the only other piece of advice I have for you is to make sure you don't get separated from your team.

Please notice the Armor Distribution of this maxed armor Catapult A1 at 422 points.
The total health is 639 when adding 422 armor and 217 structure.
However on the cockpit there is 18 armor and 15 structure, a single hit of 33 damage will instantly kill you.
On the CT, a rear torso hit of 70 damage will kill you.
On the ST, if you have an XL (Extra Light) engine, a rear torso hit of 50 (20 armor + 30 structure) will kill you.
The average single shot of any high power build is approximately between 35 and 70 damage. Though the highest damage ones tend to rely heavily on beam weapons which, if you are moving and not stationary, will not be able to quickly kill you.
There are no hacks required, and no hack in this game is capable of allowing someone to kill you faster or to kill you from an unnatural position (LRMs aren't hacks, so that doesn't count; yay indirect fire!).
Here is the hitbox distribution of the Catapult.

Purple: CT. Orange, ST. Reddish orange: Legs. Green: Arms. Blue: Rear STs. Yellow: "Head."
If this says anything, this is a topical brawler's build with SRMs. The Streaks are for spam and anti-light purposes. Notice the armor distribution?
Armor distribution is everything. It allows this "ROFLpult" to survive amazing abuse, despite having 126 points of armor.
A more in-your-face fight where it manages to tank very well, until its weak side is discovered.
And here's how to build one so you can see exactly how the armor was distributed to take maximum advantage of the hitboxes.
And here's how a light can kill anything with ease.

Link for those who can't just click on a video.<--Same vid but directs to youtube itself.
From the very first enemy (an afk Thunderbolt) to the Stalker, to the Jenner and Cicada, to the Locust.. every enemy is killed by sectioning their body parts off. Some like the usually "invincible" Stalker was killed in less than 12 seconds. Every body part I target is called out by the inserted "Targeting Computer" voice (the original MWO Betty) as is every time I receive massive damage to body parts or enemies actively target my body parts, while the more general information is provided by the prompt yet somewhat obnoxious Mechwarrior 3 computer voice.
"Target: Head. Critical Damage. Target: Head. Destroyed." "Target: Left Torso. Damage. Target: Left Torso. Critical Damage. Target: Left Torso. Destroyed."
"Warning! Left leg targeted!"
"Chain fire, engaged."
Things like that, referencing parts of the HUD or events in the world that you normally might not even realize is happening.

but what im curious about is in pilot skill i opened lrm5 range 2 if i was to add the module to the catapult at that point then upgraded to lrm5 range 3 would the module automatically upgrade or do you have to pay to upgrade it.

Yes, modules upgrade automatically, for free, when you unlock higher tiers. I would recommend cooldown modules over range in most cases. Especially with LRMs, you will rarely be able to use them effectively past 500 m, let alone over 1 km.

Odds are the light didnt need that many shots to kill you.... he probably touched off your ammo which was stored in your CT or in a side torso and blew you apart in a couple of quick shots. I know I have killed an AS7 Atlas in as little as two shots to the rear right torso because the noob didnt have CASE and I set off his AC/20 ammo. He cried hacks too.
