That's not fun. :(

I score a memorable pug match of 1000 damage yet my game crashes due to the print screen thingy that appears after I take a screenshot, making my game crash after numerous times of random blinking, attempted task manager opening to switch back to the game, and then after a short while it crashes in every case.

I wish this could be optimized better and it wouldn't be such like this.

That sounds like a third-party program running in the background stealing the game's focus and crashing it in the process when you're triggering the Print Screen key.
Check your systray (lower right on the desktop) or task manager for anything in that regard. You also might want to use CCleaner or some similar tool to check the Windows startup entries of automatically run programs you don't want or need (though that's more advanced stuff).

MWO features a built-in screenshot mechanism utilizing Print Screen, which on key press saves a JPG of the actual screen into your Windows user profile under the path "Saved Games\MechWarrior Online\ScreenShots", so there's no need for any additional software.

Small amendment: actually Print Screen AND F12 work, so try F12 as it might not trigger your troublemaker. ;)

Read the thread title, thought I had a similar issue. After reading the OP, it does not sound so similar anymore.
All I get is a complete freeze-up of the client when I hit the key, and I have been thinking it is just my computer slowly dying and not being able to cope with the load of the screenshot-feature. -_-

Technology. When you do not know your stuff, it baffles you like no other. XD

Well it has to encode the screen content to JPEG (CPU) and save the actual file to disk (HDD) so there are your two main culprits to check: slow or busy CPU and a dying or full HDD.

Or your memory's flaky, temps a bit high, a cable damaged, the moon out of orbit... you name it. ;)

With the crash, do you get your screenshot even with the crash?

Make sure you are running the game w/admin privileges (right click on shortcut, properties, compat tab, check Admin at the bottom).

Is your windows up to date?

Do a complete chkdsk for each drive then a defrag.
