This is exactly the reason why I am not going to buy any mech packs anymore unless I am satisfied with the looks of the ingame model.
Screw all the bonus stuff for early adopters - if i buy something based on the concept art, the real deal should better look like the concept art.

PGI, I do not mind that you want to standardize the looks of the weapons; it's what the community asked for, as far as i know.
And on some mechs you have done a pretty good job.
However i do not agree with your idea of how the standardized weapons look.
*gives his Firebrand a "i am disapointed, son"-Look*

Plus you ignore the fact that some hardpoints on some mechs do not need a rework.
Example, the Awesome: instead of totally reworking the PPC carrying Energy-Hardpoints, just keep the looks of the barrels as they are, and change the muzzle to what ever the player chooses.
PPC = no change
Lasers = put in a lense
Flamer = well, place the flamer inside of the current barrel; get creative here.

Consider the current barrel as... well.. as the armor which surrounds the actual weapon.
Pro- Bro-tip: If you would have done this with the Catapult K2, your customers would have a bit more faith in you, PGI.

On that note: lets not forget that we got the Urbanmech, and it's actually cool, unique AND viable.
So, there is hope. ;)

Honestly, I think the concept art right now for it looks awesome. The one we see on the Resistance 2 page.....lets just hope we dont end up like this OP says.....with that 2nd image....just yikes.



And any thoughtson what it's quirks will be? Wonder if it will get massive Arm armor buffs to kinda simulate those huge shoulder pads.

how would they deal with the armor implications though?
right now the game is designed with armor allotments for 8 sections (3 with front and back) to do something like this they would have to add in 2 more segments and then decide so they split the armor between those 2 new segments or give them "free armor" which would cause rage.

I'm thinking Hunchback-style ST buffs, assuming the giant shoulders stay in place regardless of weaponry. And possibly Arm buffs, as you say, to simulate those mighty pauldrons... which would also have the net effect of helping to protecting the STs. Still, they might not be all that impressive, as the Mauler is more known as a dakka Mech than a tanky one.

As such, I expect some nice AC quirks, though doubling down with specific AC/2 quirks for maximum trolliness. Missile and LRMs specifically will likely get some quirk lovin' as well, while Energy, contrary to the entire rest of the R-2 pack, will get only a brief nod, if at all.

You can only ever mount a 325 Engine. That's not even 65 kph with speed tweak.

In most cases you are pretty much going to be forced to run a STD engine over an XL which is going to eat up your tonnage like mad. Or risk the XL engine and side torso getting popped.

The mauler comes with 304 - 412 armor points. (The max a 90 tonner can have is 558) which puts you roughly 4.5 tons of shy of max.

The biggest problem is going to end up being the ammo for such ballistics. At roughly 3 tons of ammo per gun, you are going to be even more hard pressed for space. Especially so if you go XL, or Endo to save space.

Does this mean the Mauler will be bad?

Pfft, in MWO, you can do anything with 4x LL...ANYTHING!!!!! If I really want to punish you, it'll be 4x ER-PPCs.

ill bet money the 6 ballistic hardpoint mauler will get like ac 10 or or AC20 quirks, while the 2 ballistic variant will get the AC/2 or ac 5 quirks.

Thats exactly why I cant come up with a good build I like that keeps the look of the Mauler......

I want it to look like a Mauler, so missile racks....but none of the builds I concoct are any good...I wouldnt really dare take it into a PVE arena, much les PVP...Mauler seems slow as a tub to..easily circle jerked.

Yeah, and this fear of the mech not being the size of a pin head so it cant be hit hitbox thing we got going...its making PGI go from giving us things that look like guns to things that look like piddly little idk whats.

They should go down to shoulder level at least. Why why would they stay up there like that? It doesn't make sense to have nothing there.

Because its a part of the torso, not a detachable box like the Timberwolf's Ears. I mean, look at the Resistance model, where are your arms going to go? THey will prolly just get those doors over the missile pods when you load no missiles.

Judging by the art they will just get a little shorter I'm thinking. Look at the Banshee missile box for instance. The Mauler torso will still be there at the shoulder joint, but won't extend higher than that like it does with the missile box.

Those missile racks will be nice CT blockers when getting shot from the side.
