I'm one of those people who enjoys RPing the part of a clansman. The trials and the strange culture is simply fun to replicate in the MechWarrior games, so I would really like to see them implemented... just not at the cost of nerfing them. So here's my idea.

3050: Introduce the clans in a PvE event. Have NPCs control the invading army from beyond the periphery. I say this because I want my first experience against Clan mechs to be overwhelming and devastating. I want to get hit by a 35 ton Puma and wonder if I had actually been hit by an 80 ton Awesome. I want my eyes to buldge when I see a 75 ton Mad Cat moving as fast as an Inner Sphere medium mech and sweat bullets when I see how far and hard it can hit. Devs, I want you to make me want to run away when I see a Ryoken shrug off a direct hit by an A/C 20 and strike back with its Ultra A/C 20. Make a successful mission against a clan not one where you destroy an attacking cluster, but one where you simply manage to slow them down long enough for the rest of your regiment to escape to their dropships before you are overwhelmed.
.
3050: Introduce the Clans as a playable faction in the homeworlds (let people make a new Clan character on their account). Give the homeworlds a persistant map like the one your making for the Inner Sphere. After the 2000+ planets of the Inner Sphere, the few dozen of the homeworlds should be nothing. Clans can fight for enclaves, resources, honor, glory, all that jazz that makes RPing a Clan warrior fun. Trial of Positions, Possessions, Bloodright, they all translate well into fun tournament style gametypes (don't forget to add the codex system!).

3051: Add Clan player vs Inner Sphere NPC PvE missions. The battle of Tukayyid happens this year and we still have Operations Bulldog and Serpent to look forward to. By this point, I.S. players should have at least some salvaged Clan equipment from their own PvE missions, have ready access to former lostech weapons and equipment, and already be familiar with the abilities of Clan machines, so introduce Clan vs I.S. PvP game types.

This was something I came up while listening to the NGNG podcasts today, and may not be the direction you go with, but the gist is I really want to play as a Clansman, and I would love it if you found a creative way to make that possible without removing the threat factor of the Clans.

I like it. It incorporates my suggestion regarding the introduction of the Clans as well as add some fresh ideas. How about voice overs?

How about a scripted event when you as a regular warrior, hear the batchall over the general frequency as your CO tried to figure out WTH is going on. I will quote such an event later on.

Now this is something I could get behind.

I pretty much prefer Clan vs Clan battles anyway.

Sounds like a fine idea to me and I'll likely be looking on it from the cockpit of an inner sphere mech. I could get behind this easily enough. But I think you will have a lot of players too impatient to play the Clans to wait for this option.

But I do think it's a fine idea.

It's a damn fine idea, I like it. While I don't think I'd mind fighting real players during the initial wave, this isn't a horrible way of handling the tech gap in the beginning. Clanners get to RP/live out the different trials and get used to their own mechs, then we get to meet them in battle after a bit of playing on each side.

Quote

In the early hours of 20 March 3050, Colonel Hannah Caitlin, commander of the Third Regiment of the Twelfth Star Guards, was roused from her sleep with the news that DropShips of unknown origin had just appeared above Icar. Someone calling herself Star Colonel Jera Carns was on the blower demanding to talk to the officer in command. The colonel found bedlam in Ops Control, as the staff, most just out of bed, tried to get a handle on the situation. The colonel gave curt orders to alert the troops and notify the commander of the planetary militia to ready its forces.

She opened the link with Colonel Carns. A strangely accented voice acknowledged her call, and immediate issued the following challenge: :"I am Star Colonel Jera Carns of the Fourth Wolf Guards. What forces defend this world?"

The Old Lady, to her credit, replied immediately:"I, Colonel Hannah Caitlin, commander of the Third Regiment of the Twelfth Star Guards, command here and stand ready to repulse any invaders. I demand you further identify yourself. I am not familiar with a merc unit called the Wolf Guards. Which House do you-."

She was cut off by Carns.
"We are not honorless mercenaries, nor are we in the employ of any of your corrupt Houses. Our identity is stated. You will either inform me immediately of the composition of your forces or I will be forced to attack without the honor of the batchall and with all the forces at my disposal. You have one minute."

Twenty minutes later, the First Battalion, 30 kilometers south, reported contact with armored infantry and Mechs of alien design, but that report ended mid-sentence, to be replaced by a nearly incoherent MechWarrior screaming that the devil's legion had come to Icar. Despite her years of command, Colonel Caitlin could not help looking around at her staff as they poured over displays and asked in a peeved voice, "All right, I give up. Just who the hell are these guys?"

With them pretty explicitly stating no PvE, I'm not really sure how this is supposed to work out. Regarding the advantage of the clans, I'd say just keep it like BV: That stupid Puma and it's 2 ERPPCs gets to fight an atlas according to BV!

Well said there would be no PvE when the game launches. They didn't say if there would be PvE missions a year after the game has launched and the Clans show up. That gives me hope.

This is a really good and well thought out idea but I would like to defect to CJF on Clan day one. I want to invade!
