That's a developer issue not an issue with Steam. My understanding is it's because of a crash related to achievements, but there is a work around if you look for it. It had nothing to do with advertising and nothing to do with piracy prevention. If you're going to bring tinfoil hat stuff at least get your facts straight. Google works really well.
