Actually I HAVE tried offline mode. It used to let me play Mount and Blade but then ceased. When I contacted Steam re this issue they advised that I would no longer be able to use this feature with many steam based games for various reason that, filtered of foreign subtances basically boiled down to the fact that Steam couldn't show advertising to people playing offline. ( or monitor what they were doing for "piracy prevention". Sure)

Thanks for the Flame, it's cold here right now.

That's a developer issue not an issue with Steam. My understanding is it's because of a crash related to achievements, but there is a work around if you look for it. It had nothing to do with advertising and nothing to do with piracy prevention. If you're going to bring tinfoil hat stuff at least get your facts straight. Google works really well.

I reinstalled Mount and Blade out of pure spite, then went in to offline mode and I'm now playing it.

Though I did manage to die in my first battle after loading up my old character... I'm fairly rusty at this game. I should stick with a ranged weapon next time.

OH WAIT... not THAT kind? Whoops.

All joking aside, 99% chance it will involve flash via Scaleform v4. This is built in or supported by all the major game engines, and used for GUI's now. DOW 2 has it, the new Unreal Engine 2 games use it, Deus Ex: HR uses it, all the Crysis games and Far Cry use it, etc.

Neither and not Steam either! How about just loading it normally like every other game.

As has been pointed out through out the thread so far "every" other game doesn't use straight menus anymore, and what's wrong with using the Steamworks platform? Factual reasons only please. It provides a strong MP framework for developers, and is a built in DRM so they don't have to use some of the more severe and intrusive forms available from other DRM manufacturers, however; I haven't heard anything indicating anything from PGI about even considering Steamworks, yet.

Surely Browser and Flash are not the only options for how to run the game.

I am against browser-based launching though, its foreign and unknown to me, that makes it dangerous and frightful. I did not want to deal with it in BF3.

I just want to click an icon on my desktop or in steam, and be in-game, and stay in-game until I'm done. That's all I really care.

I second this. Will also add that Steam usage has always been very user-friendly in my opinion. STEAM at least does NOT require an internet connection to *play* a game. However, Steam (or any game streaming service) should be optional! I don't like this whole exclusive bandwagoning of EA's Origin (**** you BF3) and Gamestop's (formerly Stardock's) Impulse. A game SHOULD NOT require a membership to such services.
