I want to avoid having to shoot off my own teammates' legs but getting left behind is the leading cause of death for everyone in the assault lance other than the gargoyle and that one timber wolf thats always with us

How not to be left behind:
1 - Use team chat and/or in-game VOIP.

Yep. Team chat is highly useful. You can also set a coordinate where you can all group up and move as one

I had a game tonight where my lance dropped in Assaults on River City in the far spawn point near the ship ... where you always get left behind, as the other two lances NASCAR away from you, and then you die as you try to cross the water to catch up.
Except, this time, the other two lances on our team turned and came back to us, and gave us covering fire as we crossed the water.
It was glorious.
We won the match.

TBH sometimes its going to happen,
oh you spawned in the bad spawn and your a 53kph dwf
and your solo in a PUG!
unless your team all immediately move to help you, for you at least its gg
its sad but on certain maps with certain spawns you just do not stand a chance, welcome to MWO.
