30 Seconds? Hardly. It’s that just to get it all loaded up and start to see. No way can I do that for every map – even at 30 seconds a map you’re looking at >10 minutes to check everything before a map. Nor remember. Again, I change on the fly. I might decide even a favored build it might be interesting to swap something out. I do not have time to waste doing that. And when it’s been over a month since I used a mech last, definitely no way I’m remembering it on whatever map. And again, I play with friends, and have limited time. Extra reason not to waste time. So bully for you that you have an amazing memory, I hope you’re studying some foreign languages because learning some would probably do a lot for your future career path no matter what industry you’re in!

Also, you make presumptions, I’ve never accidentally shot someone in the back while testing. I always find a wall and shoot aiming as high up as possible, making sure no one is in the way. Only time I’ve done an early match FF was before I remapped my # keys above w and accidentally bumped one when I didn’t have my hand in the right place to throttle up.

And nor is it lazy that was a known issue! I never knew that, sure I can look it up now. But I never knew of it before. It’s such a blue moon scenario that I usually forget about it before the match is over, so have never searched the forums about it.

30 seconds is all it takes to get to testing grounds on a hot map and check the heat of a mech. That gives you all information you need to know since it won't be any hotter on a cold map. There is simply no need to test it on any map (please don't tell me you makes notes) - just a little thinking.

Also, you are aware that you consider yourself here more important than any member of your team you risk to hit? Isn't that the very essence of a bad teamplayer? (yes that is a serious question)

Far from it, I don't think I have a better memory than average ... I just don't need it. All you need to know is how certain weapons work and estimate how certain builds work - remembering the exact numbers for every mech and every build is simply pointless - in the heat of the battle that does not really matter anyway. Its like driving cars - you don't need to know the transmission of all gearboxes - you need to know how it works and have an eye on the rpm (the heat in MWO).

And by the way - I do work as a consultant in IT projects - trust me - 90% of all decisions and behaviour is made either because people are lazy or because they act like apes.

well, in that case you are an exception - sadly many people just "test heat" and just shot in the direction in which the look and don't care if a friendly mech just moves past.

seriously: look it up, you have to delete certain files once and then set your weapon groups once to get rid of it. Of course thats some work (actually to your own benefit) and of course your not lazy ... why again don't you just do it?

I do it when I am on a new chasis just to make sure I have the right weapons group and to see how much heat I get from an alpha... Of course I never shoot anyone, which is the complaint most people have for weapons "testing" ....

Heh.

I got a 3 way TK going that way on the enemy team. Saw an enemy VTR blocking the entrance to the volcano on Terra Therma, a couple of grognards sitting behind him. Lined up my Gauss from about 1200 and laid one in the VTRs kidneys. Guy turns. Looks around at his teammates, then turns back to poke at the volcano entrance. So I lay another GR shot in his kidneys. He turns, alpha strikes one of the guys, insta-killing him. Other dude starts shooting back and they tear each other up for a bit, long enough for me to close and kill the Victor right after he finished his other teammate.

Funny part was the VTR was being driven by a pretty well known, extremely vocal, self proclaimed Comp Guy, back when the poptart Meta reigned supreme. So getting him to TK his own guys, then tell him how it happened on chat, THEN kill him? Was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done in this game.

Psychological warfare at it's best... Good effort ;)

I do it because I want to. I don't even care... I make sure to go out of my way not to hit people but if someone walks in front of me, especially on HPG when everyone shoots at the circles leaving the spawn, I'm not going to shed tears.

When I do it I aim for rocks or walls. When some one hits me I look to see who and prepare to fight them out of the old beta days of when team killing was far more rampant and there was no penalty for it. Use to be one simple alpha into someone would start the whole team into a killing frenzy of he-shot-me-must-destory with the team killing three or four mechs. Now most of the time I see "sorry" or the like and forgive n forget.

It happens every time you click in from alt tabbing.

Alt-Tabbing while waiting is a bad habit. I can't count how many Dire Whales get left behind and eaten alive because they didn't have their finger on the W button during the countdown. Their team might slow down for them if they're moving, but not if they're holding still because the player is reading email or the Forums.

Sometimes my groups are wrong and I find a nice wall to test them on.
Sometimes I clip the trigger on my stick, and it fires, might clip someone else .
Sometimes alt tabbing in does it (even using icon or alt tab). (dual monitors)
Sometimes I clip the mouse button.
One time I missed the chain fire key and hit alpha... My friends banshee didn't need that arm anyway...

I have a logitech gaming mouse and sometimes the software for it doesnt like to load intially...
Thus I test whether I only have 2 firegroups...or my full 5 at the beginning of a round occassionally..

also to get a ballpark idea of how the planet's heat is going to effect my firing cycle...
I mean If I cant fire 2 CLLPS+4 CMLPLS on Chain+2 CLLPS+CLRM20 without overheating....useful info

Sigh! This player base seems to be made up of some of the most cringe-worthy complainers I have ever seen. <smh>

I will admit I occasionally do testfires because the interface really isn't clear on which things are on the left (arm/torso/side of the center) and which are on the right, but I always always make sure I'm not looking at anyone when I do it, and usually I try to stare at a very close (~4-5m away) wall or piece of floor.

This mostly happens when I forget that we have a Testing Grounds (it's easier to forget than you'd think).

The main reasons I test fire are:

1. To to sort out that my right side weapons are grouped and my left sides are seperate.

2. To see if I overheat with an alpha on Mordor

3. To contribute to the laser disco party

It's due to alt tabbing. Personally I added mwo as a non steam game to steam to enable shift-tab web browsing.

I always regain window focus with middle mouse button, no accidental shooting that way.
