Ok so I have my primary weapons over here, now what do I do with those spare 18 (or 36?) tons?...

...thought no reasonable person ever.

If you invest in one or more of the heaviest guns in the game it's not "backup", especially not if that weapon is effective at all ranges and no heat. Gauss rifles are either a centerpiece in your arsenal or not part of it.

there are better weapons for an assault than just boating gauss. gauss is a hog. it takes up a lot of room on a build (much easier to justify on clan builds though as all the high end weapons have the same weight). i guess if you enjoy the 'hiding in the rear and sniping' form of gameplay then by all means, dont let me tell you how to equip your mech.

when i have to choose between a second gauss rifle, or a pair of ll/lpl/erlls/erppc, i like to pick the latter options. more damage, no charge, and infinite ammo and it adds versatility. i personally perfer to get up close and brawl but when i do snipe its not all gauss.

That said large lasers and gauss go together like peas and carrots.
