It's 3048 in the current timeline.

The Owens doesn't show up till well after the clans invaded, and the earliest source book I can find it in is Technical Readout: 3058, fully ten years from the present year. At the earliest it was probably in production and testing by 3055. So unless some radical revisions happen in this reboot (a possibility to be sure), I doubt we'll be seeing it.

It's based heavily on the Jenner, which is confirmed as being in-game. No use double-dipping as it were. Try the Jenner out, you may like it as much or more than the 'ole Owens.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

That's what it feels like, I've heard a few die hards say that you don't deserve Battletech if you haven;t been here since the beginning. Thankfully, most of the community is kinder than that

Mr. Smiles, I'm naming my first Atlas after you!

Great survey and great analysis. I enjoyed taking the survey, even if I did have trouble answering some of the questions...a bit indecisive at times what I'd want to see and what I felt was best for the game. Means you picked some great questions, no?

Great job again, and bravo.

Well, sadly, in every group of people there seem to be those who like being elitist prats for no reason other than to soothe their own waning self-esteem.

Thankfully, as I've noticed over the years, behind every forum troll is a sad, lonely teenager who isn't worth the energy it would take to roll your eyes at their jerkiness.

Or, according to my statistics in the "has played BattleTech since it was first released" group, a sad, lonely 45-year-old man who is equally unworthy of your energy. Which is actually worse, because those 30 years of difference should've gotten them a bit of decorum.*

So, next time someone's telling you something like "If you haven't played BattleTech for [X] years, you shouldn't even bother being here." just imagine a balding middle-aged man surrounded with pewter miniatures and moldering BattleTech books with (25% of the time) no stable employment, and you'll have the person who's telling you they're better than you

* Disclaimer: If you're a 45-year-old BattleTech player who has better sense than to snap and snarl at newbies, then no, I'm not making fun of you, only the 45-year-olds who feel it necessary to log onto these forums just to be elitist jerks. If that's still you? Well, either suck it up or stop being a prat.

To clarify, I wasn't trying to be elitist, I assure you. If I came off as snobbish I do apologize. >_>

You asked after a 'mech, and I thought to myself "He's right, the Owens wasn't on that list, and I like that 'mech too.. let me see.." And I checked Sarna and then confirmed it with my own TRO manual.

Mostly, I was offering an alternative to your preferred 'mech, as I'm probably going to need to be doing the same thing. My preferred 'mech is the Highlander, and I do hope it's included, but who knows if it will be. That said I'm probably going to be cruising around in an Atlas if the Highlander doesn't make an appearance. Either way, I'll be happy.

As an aside, I'm 27 years old, and have been interested in/playing/collecting Battletech & Mechwarrior stuff since I was about 11 years old or so. My family didn't get a computer that could run a Mechwarrior PC game till around the time of MW2: Mercs, but I do still have the game and all the games that followed after it I'm happy to say. :P I have a collection of about 50 Battlemech miniatures, many of which I purchased with Christmas/birthday money at my friendly local gaming store growing up, along with Battletech novels, board game hex maps and several source books. I've been involved and have gotten familiar with the universe for a long while now, but wasn't there at the beginning either to be sure.

Having said that, I love the universe in all it's incarnations and want to help new players in any way I can, by offering resources & answering questions. Hopefully I can do that without seeming elitist, as in my own mind I'm still a relative newbie when it comes to Battletech. You could be involved with this game for twenty plus years and still not know everything, which is in my view, a testament to how amazing and rich the Battletech Universe really is.

That's my two Cbills on the subject anyway.

To Mr. Smiles: Thank you for the effort and time you put in to the survey. I very much enjoyed taking it and look forwards to any future surveys you put together!

Nah, you were offering sound advice. I was mostly referring to the people who refer to anyone that isn't an avid table top role player as an twitcher. I don't even know what "Twitcher" means.

A Twitcher is some one who focuses on games that rely more on twitch reflexes than tactics or strategy, believes those are the best games created, and wants every other game that comes out to be like that. The stereotypical FPS/Console player (not all players of that genre or of consoles fall into that stereotype thankfully, just enough for the generalization to stick).

It's mostly a cop out answer, I don't like pegging people as something like that when you really have no clue as to what they prefer..or what they may come to prefer if given more options then whats normally found in current games.

I thought the results were very interesting.

Main thing you said tho is: PGI? If you make a MechWarrior game for the masses, you'll have a smash hit until the next big game comes around. If you make a MechWarrior game for the fans? You'll have a smash hit for life.

PG are you reading and listening?

Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, etc. do not fall in that category, right?

It doesn't really matter if they do. Liking that type of game is not wrong nor does it make someone a Twitcher. To be honest the term is a prejudice derived from dealing with aggressively vocal adherents to the stereotype. Frankly I really don't care if a game emphasizes twitch reflexes or not, the interface (which rewarding twitch basically is a part of the game interface) is only a part of what goes into a game.

I also have to admit I am avid anti-console. The controller type interface that is in use now does not lend to interchangeability between games (each game has it's own button combos to do the same thing...grrr.) and the ergonomics (generally leaned forwards towards the screen with one's hands close together pushing at small buttons a 1/4 centimeter to 1/2 centimeter apart) do not lend well to longer games or changing from playing to doing other things. PC systems can have their interface hardware easily set up out of the box to be leaning back in a comfy chair with the primary input devices set far enough apart that the user can interact with them with minimum fatigue. Try to do that with a console without slapping together a home built controller or having to purchase one separate from the base system. Toss in the fact that the price of a newer system (basic system of 1-2 controllers, the base unit and maybe a game) runs about as high as an out of the box baseline PC and does not have half of the versatility and you can see why that is one thing I will not invest in.

Hey Smiles,

I missed this survey the first time around. Any plans to update the responses and/or add additional questions as the community grows?

Edit: I just noticed the survey is still available, so I plan on taking it. I just wondered if you have ever gone back through and changed any of the results, if they have needed changing, as more people take the survey.

I think it would work well if you had ad's on billboards on city maps.

The only problem with this is the 2012 Fnord Whatzit being advertised on a 3049 billboard. *cough*Anarchy*cough*Online*cough*

Just finished the piece and I agree with you, If they make a game for BT/MW fans it will around alot longer than it will be if they just design it for the F2P player

Nice to see this survey coming to life once again. It should get a bit of an upgrade, though. :)
