R9 280X Vs. Gtx 960

I've decided to upgrade from my old Radeon HD6870 to a somewhat newer GPU, which shouldn't cost to much (I'd rather wait until prices of GPUs drop and NOT blow 600+ bucks into a new card on its release day) and last a couple more years.
I don't want to/have to play every upcoming game in "ultra" settings.
I've basically wanted to grab a R9 280x, but then I've found out about the GTX 960 and done some reading.
Long story short: Are there any reasons why I should still pick the 280x over the 960 (4 GB version, of course)?
Otherwise I'm set.
My CPU is an i5 3570k, 16 GB DDR3 RAM.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

A R9 280X is a better card then the GTX 960 (the R9 280/ R9 285 is only roughly equal,) as long as you don't have to worry about the PSU.
The rollouts within the next two weeks are non-events: Prices won't move, relabels don't impress anyone …

I'd wait and see what 3xx series does to GPU options and if there's further tweaks like the 285 had improved tessellation performance which may have made their way into the "relabels"

I will say I was hoping that somewhat of a small portion of these cards would be rebrands :/
I was at least hoping the 390 would be Fiji as well.

If it's in Budget, I'd say go for a R9 290X or GTX 970:

btw
use throttlestop to max ur cpu

even though it SHOULD, the gtx770 has enough to max everything, this game is not that optimized and so it won't without a good processor
for my gpu i had to downgrade the graphics a little bit, like the particles and the on screen effects,
but you can run with max textures and any ammount of antialiasing you want. it makes no difference to these cards
you will only compromise on antialiasing to get like a minimal boost, but you can run postaa or even fxaa for free basically
the max aliasing settings will only cost you like 5 fps
well 960 should be better but still, this game is... weird

I'm satisfied the way MWO runs right now, so I'm certainly NOT doing the upgrade for this game.
My CPU should be good for another 2ish years.
As for the new Radeon series: it's going to be the rebrand of a rebrand of a rebrand. Same reason why I'm actually leaning towards a GTX 960.
It's certainly newer, probably about 3 % slower than the 280x but a lot more power efficient, cooler and quieter.
I may add, that I'm living in Germany, thus I can't do all those fancy Newegg deals and the pricing of PC components is a lot higher over here than in the US. A GTX 960 for instance is about to cost me $280.
A GTX 970 starts at $370.
I do have the money, but am not willing to spend so much on a GPU, which is basically outdated, as soon as arrives at my home.
Since the native resolution of my screen is 1680 x 1050 (and I don't plan to replace it in the upcoming future) I don't think that I desperately need the extra power of the GTX 970, at least not while paying this huge amount of extra money.

Get the GTX 970; Start to think about replacing the monitor in a year or two …

Because we already know the details behind the 300 series if you've been paying attention to the news releases.
The entire 300 range are rebrands of the existing 200 series clocked higher for more performance. And some of the 200 series were already rebrands of the 7000 series some 4 years old.
The only new GPU AMD is releasing is its halo titan esque product which is Fiji with HBM 1 limited to 4GB VRAM but much higher throughput.
This is also going to be priced in the higher bracket of the market and AMD'S usual cheaper performance pricing.
Given that you can afford it I would buy a 970 and be done with it.
The 960 is an ok card; the 4GB version pointless unless you SLI because it doesn't have the horses to utilise that 4GB to a playable extent.

If his Ivy Bridge 3570K is overclocked to 4.2ghz+, then he does not require a new CPU. Haswell on average, only performs ~10% faster clock to clock vs Ivy

In that case, I'd go for the R9 285, if it's within your budget. The 285 has the latest version of GCN(True Audio and FreeSync Support). The 960 2GB would also be a fine choice

Anyway, partpicker doesn't work well for germany. You can get aftermarket 290's for 300.

Cheap, cool and needs little power.
It runs MWO on ultra I think, at least high.
Careful not to buy one with a poor fan management.
They even have a 4GB version now. I can recommend the Asus STRIX.

See my review of the 2GB variant on alternate.

I did replace the fans in the end cause they were still spinning and slightly audible for some reason. The fan manager software is not best but still far better than the EVGA.
With a very quiet fan profile it reaches 71C on MWO with my 2x12cm bequiet fans.
I can run MWO at 60C if I push the fans a bit.

The GTX750TI is only slightly better than my current card and actually I was looking to make a significant improvement.
I think I'll go for the GTX970, so thank you everyone.

Good card and just took a price cut.
