It's to reserve your download.

In essence its MS finding out how many plan to actually upgrade for free on release, and how much server bandwidth they need to provide.

As to your second question im running the Win 10 TP as my main OS and have been for months, no stability issues or game related issues since i've been running it.

Just a reserve your copy of a upgrade as DV stated. It is my understanding that it will be downloaded and installed come June 29th or around that time. I have also been running it for several months now, and have fraps numbers posted on here in some of my threads. It would seem as of now now issues running it on my rig and this game, however, Windows 7 did so better FPS at this time and the last time I checked it, around 2 weeks ago.

It downloads now, just doesn't install to release day i believe. They can gage how much bandwidth they need on release day, and get some of it shipped out before then,

How is it? Call me backwards but I am very pleased with W7. I heard horror stories about W8 and how it took "nanny" to a whole new level and contrary to what was intended was less user friendly. Some people complained they could not even look at their own files without a lot of hassle and how optional functions were cluttering the interface. When I heard that I decided to stick to W7.

Windows 8 wasn't that bad, there were certainly way's around the Metro interface which was most complaints, 8.1 removed the need for that entirely as you never need to deal with metro.
In terms of nannying i wouldn't say it was worse than 7 but then i always turn UAC off (it's like the first thing i do).

In terms of Windows 10, obviously the early days were bumpy, i haven't had any compatibility issues for the past few months.
The start menu is pretty redundant these days, (can't remember that last time i used it) as all the important things are available from right clicking the start button.

The only minor complaint i have is that some things have been moved from the control panel into a new settings area whilst other aspect were left in the control panel

If you plan on upgrading to 10 ( i haven't yet found a reason not too) then yea. It'll save you doing it on D day when it will probably be super slow.

Any idea if it offers anything special to gamers? Performance improvements?

Better under the hood resource management as you get with any upgrade, and of course down the line DX 12 will be Win 10 only, which will provide significant gaming improvements when games make the jump to be compatible with DX 12

This is a good question, Ive installed the 10 TP from USB as a flat install never as an upgrade.

Given the only requirements is that you have the correctly updated version of 7/8.1 i would think an upgrade rather than reinstall else you could do it on any 7/8.1 install regardless of it being an updated version or not.

I'm running the WIN10 TP in a notebook Dual Core 2.20 GHz with only 2Gigabytes of RAM and a NVidia 9100MG, and it is running VERY smoothly for the old hardware, similar to a Linux Ubuntu i used to have on it. Before that it was a vista and it would take forever to do anything on it.

You will lose you Win7 licence when you officially upgrade it to Win10 when it is released and Win10 is bound to your PC and wont work on a new one when you change hardware afaik.

Double clicked the updater, left it unattended
Everything worked fine
All apps and games worked after the upgrade (I actually bothered with a dual system before that, pfft)

Things work fine, if games can adopt dx12 soon enough I might not have to upgrade my IvyBridge i5 once again :D

Though a M2 slot or 2 might make me :D

Exact things on licenses and installs have not "exactly" been clarified yet

Last I heard was that you can do a clean install after upgrading, though that could also mean a reset not installing from an ISO

I thought you could only download 'till the 29th? This early thing was to avoid them renting a big enough server?
