Did You Join A Unit Or Stay Solo. Why?

Have been a staunch Lyran Comon wealth Pilot, since Table Top, however these days I am not sure which faction I would join, would have to be Loyalist and not jumping factions, other than that still unsure

You do know that literally none of the things you complained about actually happen in units, right? Everyone plays whatever they want. There are no mandatory training matches, or things like that. I've been with a unit for 2 years. I haven't logged into our TS3 server, or talked to anyone there in 3 months, and last night I popped in, they were all like "Hey Iraqi, long time no see. We're gonna do a drop, wanna join us? Sure guys, what do you want me to bring? Whatever you want man."
The things you are complaining about happen only in the competitive team. So in my unit, we have/had 2 of those. If I don't sign up for them, I don't need to worry about scheduled training sessions, builds ... etc. If you want to be in the competitive team, then you gotta get competitive.
Also, even though we have ranks in many units, they are only there to help you recognize who's been more active, and more experienced. They don't really enter into our social interaction, because we're not 6 years old. They are there to help you understand the organizational structure.
Just like how a business has management, and staff. Same here. Except there's no pay difference, and no real rank difference.
EDIT: I wonder why people have those stereotypes of units. It's a very curious thing for me. I've interacted with at least 38 different units so far, in my time with MWO. Not a single one of them fits these common misconceptions.

Because 95% of every clan or guide (or whatever they are called in a particular game) I have been in has been super structured and taken them selves way to seriously. That remaining 10% of clans was never anything more than a random group of guys who would, on occasion, group up and cooperate and often lacked cohesion when they had to work together.
Maybe I've simply suffered poor luck in choosing the right clans but this is what experiences have taught me.

That makes a lot of sense now. Most of the units always have these super well put front pages, and everything looks like it was taken right out of an army recruitment manual "DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THE BEST?" "DO YOU WANT TO WORK AS A MEMBER OF A TEAM DEFIES ALL OBSTACLES?", and that kinda stuff.
I guess it's because they want to look professional to outsiders. On the inside it's like the mess hall after morning drills, honestly.

I play this game on a laptop using a touchpad. I like to goof off and do silly things people might get upset over if I was in a unit and they were relying on me to pull my own weight. There are days when my FPS mysteriously drops from 40 FPS to 5 FPS and I'm completely useless in game. Other days my FPS hovers comfortably above 20. I think I would have to solve those technical issues if I joined a unit. I'm just going to be a casual gamer for awhile. Maybe later I'll find a unit. I dropped a few times with [BOSS] when they were short a man. I would probably try to join them. It seems like there are some cool units out thar, regardless.

When I was in a unit, the interviews, after a short trial period, were generally just in place in an attempt help weed out ***** and nothing more.

He's got it, let in one string of asterisks and you realize "Welp... not doing that again."
For most (and by "most" I mean "us") the "interview" is a quicky in game and on TS followed by a group discuss of overall impressions and a quick Yea or Nay. Excessive profanity, racism and humor that's a little too blue are quickly snipped.

Also i don't like premades/group drops, unless you're fighting other premades/group drops it's a stomp, which is something i hate being on either side of.

In public queue, groups only play groups, and there really is no time commitment fr being in a unit. Do you guys think we operate on a schedule, and log in daily? I haven't been on my unit's teamspeak server in 6 months, and I'm still part of the unit.
