1 Week Lifecycle?

For all the long time players here, is this game pretty much over after your first week, or after you master your mech? Or is that the point where you are expected to crack open your wallet an begin the free-flow of cash for the ridiculously overpriced content in this game?
What is there to do after mech mastery? What am I missing??

The only thing you really need to buy is mech bays and those cost 300 mc which if you spend 7 USD (1250 mc) can get you 4 extra bays.
They give them out during challenges though so you can get a bunch for free too.

The longer-cycle is in picking and mastering different or new mechs, each of which requires purchase of 3 chassis variants in order to master that particular type.
Aside from usually weekly events and competitions which are generally good fun and encourage use of different mechs, MWO has no "end game content" as you might understand if from other games. I suspect that most veteran players, and certainly those founders who knew what MWO was supposed to have been, might give this as an example of one of the reasons why MWO has longevity issues.
It is fair to say that different types of mechs will have radically different play styles, e.g. an Adder plays totally differently to say an Atlas, so there's additional fresh experiences to have, but in essence you're correct.

That said. Maybe you don't like the three you have. And you are eyeing up another chassis. Strip your mech, removing all equipment and modules sell it. Buy a new one. Equip it and master it in turn. Continue.

I have 68 'mechs. Some have over 150.
Also, 'mech mastery is where the game starts, not ends.

Rank 2 and 6 both have mech bays and can be reached over a two week contract.
The issue is that building a decent drop deck takes about 12 mechbays, not to mention buying all of the mechs and modules, at a reduced rate because CW rewards are pretty bad in the C-bill/hour department.

MWO doesn't need an "end game" any more than LoL needs an end game. You just play and hopefully you have some fun battles. While engaging in said fun battles, you'll earn c-bills, which lets you change things up by buying new mechs or tinkering with the ones you already have. Prices are high, though, and it takes a long time to fully tweak out a mech build, let alone several mechs.
Community Warfare is one way to take your game to the next level if you're interested in joining groups, but it's also not really end game by any definition of the word.

If getting new mechs does not appeal to you then you probably will not like this game.

Mech bays are quite cheap. Buy one hero mech at the most. Spend everything else on mech bays.
Buying new mechs and levelling them can be.. well.. not quite fun, but... compelling? >_>

Play the game.
If you are after a complicated and compelling progression journey then you are going to be sadly disappointed.
If you want to drive around in a walking tank and shot other walking tanks in the face with neato pew-pew-laserbeams then you're in hog heaven.
Neither path is "right", it's just that the game provides one thing in aces and you either like it or you don't.

Things like:
-Find mechs and weapons that fit your style
-Try different load outs and try to be creative
-meet new people and shoot them
-get purple epic gear in CW
-read into BT lore and get all delusional RP'ing a mechwarrior of sorts
-find something in the near bottomless well of intricacies and pointless matters within and around the game to complain about on the forums.
-join a unit so you can call everyone else scrubs and other ****
-challenge yourself in not so good mechs
-get pokemon syndrome and try and buy em all
-git gud
I don't know....you've mostly got to just like shooting giant robots with sweet weaponry.

Since you're new, I'm assuming that you know nothing of BattleTech/MechWarrior history and lore. If you did, then you would understand the crazed fandom many of us here have.
That being said, for someone unfamiliar with that, think of Pokemon. I assume you know about the catchphrase, "Gotta catch 'em all?" That sums this up. There are hundreds of Mechs in this game and the fever to "own them all" is very hot. Each Mech has its own unique quirks, geometries, behavior, movement, weapon loadouts, etc. When you finish with one type, you move on to the next.
I personally own about 80 Mechs at this time and plan to buy many more in the future with in-game C-bills and occasional Mech Packs.
The gameplay is the big draw. This is something of a thinking game. You can't run and gun or you'll get shredded. You have to work together with your team to win; better coordinated teams carry the day. As a result, it's a refreshing change from the CoD style gameplay that seems so pervasive today.

I am enjoying blowing stuff up with lasers though... I suppose I need to just wait and see how things turn out!
Thanks again!

I am aware of all that, hence why I wrote in my original post:
"Aside from usually weekly events and competitions which are generally good fun and encourage use of different mechs, MWO has no "end game content" as you might understand if from other games."
The OP is a new player, hence my attempt to describe what he or she might consider progression from the paradigm of other games and game types.

We can both agree that MWO does not have 'end game content' but whether it needs it or would benefit from it is an entirely different discussion.

And yep, the game is all about just getting more mechs. Unless you want to play competetively of course.
