But more than that, I hope for a dynamic universe...
That I can play beyond the traditional PvP formula... For example, fighting in a scenario where one team must attack a base not only defended by mechs, but also turrets and vehicles (Mechs Players or AI, Turrets/Vehicles strictly AI)...
That in the future, my battles means more that an increase of C-Bills and XPs, but also a % chance of conquest (or defense) of a planet for my Team, Faction or Mercs...
That if I want to help defend against the Clan, or compete in an arena for the best MechWarrior, or help Victor Davion beat his treacherous sister, etc... , I can do it...

Indeed, I hope they give the right incentives to play as a team (for pub games).
I know it is really focused on "clan related" gameplay. Clans don't need incentives to play as a team
But not everyone is prepared to join a clan.

I'm hoping the game will run well and be well balanced. I don't mind to much about cosmetics etc because they can be added at a later date but as long as the core game is solid then it’s going to be a winner.
If the core game is awful and plays badly then anything else built/added on top will be a fail.

1. No boating - only what the varient slots allow for. This was the worst part about MW4. And so far its looking good for MWO.
2. Heat management - you know actually having to manage your heat and tweak your config to work. This was also practically missing from MW4
3. Electronics Warfare - give light mechs a better role in battles. I like all mechs but in past games light mechs were just smaller lesss formidable opponents who played a very limited part in the battle.
4. Balanced Battlefield - dont make MWO a short range only or long range only game. AC20's, Gauss, PCC, LRM's and SRM's should give pilots a choice on how to do battle on a given map. Dont make LRMs too gimp so that Catapults are just a good looking but rather less than functional mech.

Fun gameplay.
That's all I ever ask for, and I like to think I'm a good judge of whether a game will be fun or not, and know when I should pay for a good game before release.
Only exception I can think of was Borderlands. Not my cup of tea.

failing that; overall fun game-play, periphery states and pirate kingdoms, a robust community, and as many mech designs as possible

But- this does still count on the community. I get royally fed up with impatient, childish players hurling insults at new players. Fine, I might sound like a complete care-bear but seriously, it can be off-putting to new-to-BT/MW players when their first hour/day/week of experience in MWO is being hurled straight into a full game only to have "Pros" tear into them because they don't even know the controls.
Yes, I know- you'll always get trolls, idiots and players that are just morons or who feel smack-talking is the mature way to deal with things- but giving players the choice to at least match themselves with some form of level playing field in terms of experience would be nice, if only until they find their large, stompy Mech feet.
That aside- I'll be glad to see the Devs stick to canon- of course there may be some time-jumping so we aren't waiting 10+ years to see Omnitech and Clans, but it's worth it for the experience. Whether things get implemented so we see NPC-controlled Clan mechs appear as a "Third" side in team-deathmatch style games or otherwise doesn't bother me- even if it's just checking the store and seeing new kit, players will be happy to get their new stuff.
As many others have stated- knowing your games are making a "real" impact on the game-world is going to be a nice feature I can't wait to see- whether you're going solo, operating in a Clan or House- knowing that 1% of territory control was -your- doing is going to be a real goal to work for instead of just "I must get experience/Cbills to get X". Goals, achievements and directions for players to work towards will make MWO a really Gucci experience.
I don't need to say I "hope" for good visuals, we've already all seen that the engine is doing MWO justice and then some. Provided I know it isn't going to make my system cry synthetic tears of woe at the requirements I'll have no problems. My only real concern is latency, being in the United Kingdom I can only cross my fingers I won't have to put up with a long-term experience of high latency until other servers are set up. Knowing I can be in a lance with players across the world is the biggest, best feature of all- one I'll look forward to experiencing.
Lastly, a good community. Of course we've got our old hands who have been piloting Mechs when over half of us were barely capable of emitting a single syllable squawk (let alone progress past cell division or the twinkle in our parents eyes)- but I'm hoping everyone will be united under the Dev's banner and support one another and the fine staff- it's a true honour for us to be playing this, after all- how many of us have wanted a new Mech game?......exactly, MWLL can only fulfil so many desires.

But to add to all of those good posts, I would 'love' to not have a matchful of WoT chat spam that included 'My team sux; my team are noobz, you all suxorz, you F@#King Idiots....etc, etc, etc....'
I miss the civility of 'Dangit! You killed me!!?! ... Nice shot and good game.'
