Hello all,

Next month I'm going to travel to China on business but I will have a few days to enjoy the place.
Will land in Hong Kong and a day or so later will be on a boat to the province of Zhongxiang where I'll be for a little while.

Do any of you know anything I will like to try out when I'm there?
Any tips for sights to see or things to buy cheaper than in Europe?

I will be there for just 2 weeks and mostly working, but I will try to enjoy most of the free time as I can, and to do so, if any of you have any advise, it will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Edit - Regarding purchases, there is a chance to get things from Macau. Not sure about Japan though...
Also I'd like to bring something back to my office colleagues for them to taste, some strange fruit or candy or snack :)

Err, there's not much an European could enjoy there, but since you're going to have free time you could visit Huangxian Cave one of largest caves in the world, though it receives almost no foreign tourists and fail to attract more because government doesn't really like Murican kids chopping off pieces of stalagmites and urining at the corners of the cave.

As for buying stuff cheaper than in Europe.. buy anything you can, electronics, clothes, canned and dried food ( you can carry them over back home and consume it there, so you'll save on purchasing food for a while)

Electronics and cloths? How about IMPORTANT THINGS! Like 40K, and BT miniatures?

lol guys :D

The caves are actually a good idea!

I will keep that in mind.

As for the other stuff, well, I've been told brand things are almost as expensive there or in Europe but the food... I don't know if they allow us to carry all kind of food back...

Brand names!? You're in China, you can get a knock off that's just as good as the real deal for a third of the price! (All jokes aside, I hope you enjoy your stay there. Also, when you are at a hotel, ask the concierge if there are any great spots you should visit, they generally know about these things)

If you can find a small bag of Durian fruit hard candy (the good ones will have tiny flecks of real Durian in them) buy that and take it to your co-workers back home. Its an experience like no other... The looks on their faces as they try them as the flavors rotate across their tongues. I can best describe it as very ripe mango, pineapple and lychee followed by methane and rotted cheeses but before the methane and cheese can become overly offensive its back to sweet mango, pineapple and lychee.

The hard candies I found were about the size of a pencil eraser so they are quite short lived.
