i had my best results with:
ORION ON1-VA
then
ORION ON1-V
don't own the M sorry. got the protector on sale and tried different loadouts. all with lots of fun and i used the protector for CW when it was 250 tons limit.
but even when you don't get the protector orions are fun mechs to play with
i like all my orions won't trade them
cheers

M isn't really good for much, aside from the entertainingly silly 'rapid fire' LBX/ASRM4 builds. Not really worth the XL money, tho. Take it if you are a completionist, otherwise there isn't much going for it.
You might see a 'this is kinda like a timber but weaker' thing going on, but that's the story of the orion. At least SRMs and ACs are taking the main role, instead of the timbers ERGODML & friends. Still somehow love the mech. Not even sure why.^^'

beware of putting 4 srm6 in the orion's arms.
they are flimsy arms, and the convergence on these missiles is awful even with artemis - definitely not the platform for 4srm6.
griffin > awesome8r > catapult > stalker > jager'A' > orion (FOR 4xSRM6)

why not the ON1-M?
I was theory crafting the other day and this looks rather nice:
ON1-M - 3x LPL, 1x UAC/5 (STD280) -- XL320 version - 4% cooler, 10kph faster
It gets 20% cooldown for the UAC/5 and 12.5% each cooldown, heat generation, and duration for the LPLs.
It could also do a brawler build with 3x SRM6+A and has a 25% cooldown quirk for it, combined with a juicy 20% cooldown AC/20. I'm surprised this variant doesn't get more love.

The orion isn't the best SRM mech, but it's a solid one. The AC20+SRM builds are almost competetive if used correctly and well covered. You ranking is a bit off, to say the least. First, SRM-griffin and SRM-stalker basically beat every other IS-mech when it comes to SRM.
Awesomes, on the other hand, are one of the most vulnerable mech in the game because of their size and it's costly to attain good speeds above 75 ton (dont even mention XLs). Hardly makes a good brawler against any good player. Catapults are terrible SRM mechs, their covergence is around the same level as the Orion, but the arms are the most vulnerable parts in the whole of MWO!

1 UAC is absolutely never worth it. Takes far too much attention, requires constant facing of the target, and just doesn't do enough damage to justify the shortcomings. 2 UACs tend to be very useful.
The V is especially better since it also also has 20% laser duration quirks. So you'll get 2 short LL bursts and the firepower/suppresion of 2 ultra-acs. Toyed around a lot with the mech, but never could find a better build.
Just checked the ON1 VA/Ms quirks, and i actually just forgot that the VA has no AC20 quirks anymore. The M variant btw can't equip a third ASRM6, though, since it a got CT-missile slot. Would be AC20+2xASRM6+ASRM4.
I guess that isn't much different to a VA. Latter one has a bit less AC20 cooldown, but more velocity and further reaching SRMs. So there isn't a huge difference, but i'd still recommend the VA for the additional missile slot and range. It's just a bit more of build variety, and everything relying on more than 2 laser is usually better served by the K.

Both the V and the VA make decent ranged mechs, much better than they do brawling for me.
My V finally started doing good when I set it up with an ac10, two ppcs and dual lrm 5s.

that's how i play my orions; ranged. (gauss + erll)
i really can't do brawling with such a slow torso twist, but if you can pull it off with lbx and whatnot then that's great too

Don't know why, if you need a sale, the next Hero event will have the Protector on sale.
