After 3 years of mwo. I have finally decided to purchase a couple of hero mechs.

what are my best options if i want the biggest bang for my buck?

( not restricted to the ones that are on sale right now... other heros will get their sale in the next week and the week after... confirmed by russ)

If i want to choose 3, what should it be?

i hear the wang and the huggin are pretty good... how about oxide?... or misery?... grid iron maybe?... jester?... iliya?

I don't like any of the ones on sale right now. what is your play style? what mechs do you like now?

I can rule one out for you at least and best I can offer. Don't buy an Illya right now the heavy key is overcrowded as is. Just my 2 cents.

Huggin abuses its SRM4 quirks exceptionally well.

Misery gives you some build paths that no other Stalker offers.

Personally, I'm partial to the 2x SRM4 4x ML X5 Cicada, and the AC20 2x MPL YLW is a solid Centurion. The Firebrand also gives you the closest thing to a Rifleman that we're likely ever to get.

Good for you, Jack!

All the ones you mention are pretty good. I think the ones that terrify me the most on the battlefield is the Oxide and Huginn.

The trouble with hero mechs is that most of them are one trick ponies. For this reason, I would get the Misery or Jester, because at least you can do a few different builds with them. If you intend to play a lot of matches with your one hero mech, it's good to be able to mix between builds.

Huginn and Oxide are the biggest one-trick ponies in the game.
Grid Iron is just different flavours of gauss rifle vomit
The Ilya is a triple AC5 or UAC5 brawler. People will run gauss on it, but that's probably the worst dual gauss mech in the game.
With the Misery and Jester, you can experiment with different variations of MLs, MPLs, LLs, LPLs and PPCs. On top of that, the Misery can slap on a ballistic and a missile weapon.

I guess the wang will be number one. (no gridiron for me i guess)

now i have to choose between huggin and oxide... and something else.

my playstyle is flexible... effectiveness is my priority.

YLW.

106 kph
tanks well with an XL
ac20 and 2 MPL
In and out face wrecker
A surgeons scalpel
first hero, still the best hero.

Huginn is less of a walking CT, but has more vulnerable legs.
Huginn as JJs for terrain, Oxide does not
Oxide has higher alpha, Huginn has more DPS
both are rather vicious in the hands of a good pilot.

The Huginn and Oxide are both good missile lights, with the Huginn being the crazy DPS machine and the Oxide offering higher alpha bombing passes. If you want to do SRMs in a light, you're best off picking up one of them.

The Yen Lo and Grid Iron are powerful but limited single gun specialists. They do what they do well, and they're fun, but they only do one thing. You're going to kit them out once when you buy them and never touch their loadout screens again. Whether they would be a wise purchase depends on how long you can see yourself enjoying their playstyle. Do you love AC/20s like a family member? Are you a dedicated gauss sniper?

And the Sparky, Firebrand and Misery are all rock solid chassis that exchange some of the weapon quirks of their base variants for unique hardpoints. It's impossible to go wrong with any of them; they will never be bad 'Mechs. But their quirks don't provide the kind of unique experience you get with a Huginn or Grid Iron.

Those are the only ones I'd really consider.

If you like Assaults I would put the Misery at the top of the list for heroes.

It's one of a very select group of mechs that are just good based on potential loadouts & geometry.

It has almost non-existent quirks, and still manages to be one of the best assault mechs the IS has.

I think the Firebrand offers a lot of variety in loadouts. It has nice high mount and is generally a fairly agile mech with decent speed. Right now, IMO, it is the most versatile Heavy hero.

Huggin, lol, I mastered that thing before quirks, and it was attrocious. I ran all kinds of troll loadouts on it after while just trying to at least find amusement in it. Nowdays, it spams SRm like a machine gun and is likely to see nerfs if the whiners keep it up.

oxide, lol, I played that one before quirks too. SSRM2 boat for me, and I played this in the background for every match I dropped in:

Hover in back by fatties, waiting for that vulture light to show up. Jennering: begin! As the match progresses you just aggromagnet chaos form around the map splatting anything you come across.

nowdays, SRMs for similar effect, but less fear from enemy lights. Oh the fleeing lights, they couldnt get away, their panicked zig zagging, jumping, turning...... and eventual dismemberment and death was so yummy.

On the subject of SRm, I must mention the Golden Boy. I have had A LOT of fun in that thing playing close support to a Fatty pal. oh the reactions when something peeks over the hill and gets a giant SPANK of 70+point alpha of SRM in their face while they were worried about that fatty pal standing next to my silly Kintaro. Hot as blazes, but doesnt matter really, and makes bank on companant destructions.

I also enjoyed X5 with near stock loadout. Those SRM2 cool down pretty fast. Easy to get in two strikes per strafing run without even any extra facetime.

Mechs I would avoid:

Pretty Baby. Just... don't even.
St. Ive's Blues. Speed, toughness, firepower: pick two. ST. Ive's picks: none of the above.
Dragon Slayer and Heavy Metal get honorable mention. DS is in Time out with the other Victors yet, and HM has side torsos made of paper and the rest of the HGN issues for baggage.

I guess a rule of thumb is: if it is one of the oldest ones(like what is on sale this weekend) make sure it comes recomennded on the forums. The ones that arent are sub par, mostly because PGI has learned how to build mechs a lot better and the old ones have gotten left behind. Heck even my Dragon heroes have weird convergence oddities with the arm weapons. PLus the visuals. I mean, look at a Hellslinger and then look at an Illya. In short, the older ones need hitbox passes and quirks to be brought up to speed, minus the few that come recomended like the Wang.

Misery is still hands down one of the best mechs in the game.

Jester is extremely strong at laser vomit

Grid iron is flat out OP currently

Yenlow with a XL and ac20 is pretty god mode

Ilya heard you like autocannon 5s bro.

Heavy metal had warhorns before it was cool, and it is pretty balanced.

Oxide is Under powered but plays similar to a spladder.

Pretty baby is a waste of money.

Boars head has 6 energy, and an XL 400, its Amps go up to "eleven"

Hellslinger is unique in that maps have opposite heat effects.

La malenche ive heard is bad.

Fang is close range good Flame is long range good

Gray death and pirate bane are nothing special

Ember is balanced but a firestarter, so... slightly OP hit boxes

Goldenboy is gold and cheaper than 500 bucks. it is slower than any other kintaro. it reminds me of a boxer.

St ives is a vindicator. and vindicators have gargoyle problems in a medium

X5 is the fastest medium im pretty sure, kicking it up to 150KPH it is the ultimate striker/flanker/fader/light chaser

Firebrand is the best jager in my opinion, though my opinion of jagers isnt high. It has high mounted energy and ballistic.

Deaths knell is nothing special

Anasi just flat out is under-performing.

Huggin is a guaranteed 1.0 KDR mech. ammo dependent.

Dragon slayer is a giant jumping centurion just like all victors.

Protector is shiny but nothing special, then again, neither are orions.

I like my Ilya and my Jester.

Ilya with 3 A/C5s and cool down module is great. Throw in some MLasers, it's a party.

Jester is all about the biggest XL engine you can take. Mount 2 LLasers and 4 MLasers (along with JJs) and it is a fun ride. Nothing like going almost 100kph in a Catapult lol.

I have been using the Ilya this weekend. I have ran it with dual gauss, LLasers, dual A/C10s or triple LBX10s in the past, but the triple A/C5 has yielded me the best luck.

Anyway. The Ilya is a good mech with a nice STD engine and some fast firing A/C5s. The Jester is a hotrod built for speed and decent firepower. I enjoy both a ton.

Well, you have made it known you're not much for energy builds :). I prefer the 2 LLaser, 4 MLaser for more heat management. Plus I carry full JJs and still have the option of dropping a couple heatsinks for dual AMS.

I think the main reason I don't carry 4 LLasers is because I could do the same build in the K2 (well, a bit slower).

got the max JJs and 9it0s 40% on smurfys. I just didn't find myself killing stuff well enough with the 2/4 build
