Top guys always get help from others so they really are not top guys. That is way tourneys are such a joke and not worth bothering with.

The top of the leaderboards for the current tournament are really high.

I'm not a terrible player. In solo queue I'm always at (or near) the top of the match score. While writing this I'm some place around 35th on the board. To get to the top I would need 3 solo kills a game for every game.

Assuming you didn't do even 1 point of team damage let's guess at the numbers in a pug drop:

800 damage (800/15) = 53

2 solo kills = (30 + 20 + 10)X2 =120

10 kill assists (10X9) = 100

Win = 10

Survive = 10

Total = 293 X 10 = 2930

For me that would be a really good game, and that's still not enough to get to the top of some of the leaderboards. Crazy!

Just means the people ahead are better players, sorry, its just, the way it is, I had a 35 I think, 30 something might have been 38, in my Griffin, and a top 50 finish in my Grass Hopper. In that one, I had 3,4 and one 5 kill games that scored, and 400 damage at least, and plenty of assists,most damage, and solo kills kill games.

OP, if you are solo player you will almost never get to top score. The top guys usually play in groups and feed kills to one guy. Then they get like 3500 score at the end of the day.

YokiLin is running solo top of the Oxide board, while I'm languishing in 58 place in my Fang, guy plays a mobile intelligent, aggressive game, which is the style I like, so I trailed around as best I could, to avoid the stationary flock, guy won us that match on his own, without getting much reward as far as improving total score

There are simply, above average players, like myself, and Exceptional one's

I would guess some are better, but I would guess some are aimbotting. 3+ solo kills a game is huge. Yes, you can get lucky sometimes and pull off a 3+ solo kill game and I can see if you are grinding away you'll pull off enough games to get up high on the leaderboard. But 3+ solo kills means your whole team is shooting at someone else, and the 3+ you solo killed are crappy enough not to be able to touch you.

I can see it in the oxide. You are fast, you've got 4 srm4 or 4 streaks if you are light hunting. You find the worst players on the other team, the guys just standing still. Those guys don't even realize it when you shoot them in the back the first or even second time. Or if you can lock in behind the hero commando with back armour of 6, it's a one shot kill. But even then, you still need to play a ton of games to have everything fall perfectly in line.

And breaking top 50 doesn't make you a better than average player...it makes you one of the rest of us. I bought the commando on Friday and have been in the top 50 each day of the tournament.

That is what I have been thinking as well. One solo kill, sure but if the other guy is half competent and the majority of the fight is 1 vs 1 you will get pretty banged up yourself. 3 times in a match? That sounds like you have to be very lucky if you are to do it 10 times in 4 days no matter how good you are.

There are enough bad players and bad builds in this game where I can camp the cave in Forest colony on my Orion and kill 2 heavies and an assault that go in one at a time and have builds that are so heat inefficient that they shut down in front of me nearly heat-neutral Orion and that quirked LBX with SRM4s rip immobile mechs rather quickly. Heck, some players with gauss let me charge them down over 1500m of open ground in Alpine and kill them with SRMs.

Solo killing 3 noobs isn't that hard unless you have a high heat mech.

really depends on the quality of the competition. Tenore, DONTOR or others I drop within CGBI on my ALT, often run some very hot mechs. Come across them, 1v1, and your Orion will be a smoking pile. Ditto if it's guys like Heim, Proton, etc.

Matchmaker keeps tossing you against the likes of them, it's rather hard to get 3 kills, more importantly, 3 solo kills.

I wish I would get a few more matches where the noobs were on the other team, not my own. Or better yet, on BOTH, so I could rack up a few nice 1000 dmg, 6-7 kill matches.

Well I wouldn't say "isn't hard", it is hard.. but it is doable.

Here is another tip for you all participating in the current tournament : solo kill does not mean going 1v1. It could also mean he's shooting at someone else and noone else but you is shooting at him.

Here is the first of my 10 matches that I was proud of, because I got 4 solo kills (although only one of those I consider a proper solo kill).. start watching from min 3:00 then skip to 6:20 after that kill :

solo kill it's simply kill most damage dealt and killing blow together, nothing more

actually i can prove it

>Solo Kill:

>Achieve both "Kill Most Damage" and "Killing Blow" for the same target.

I am still not convinced. Say only 3 are involved. You are far from guaranteed the killing blow AND most damage. If you sneak up on someone that is roughed up chances are you get the kill but not most damage. Almost all my solo kills in the Yen-Lo Wang has been 1 vs 1. To many variables to do it consistently unless the opposing team act like sitting ducks.

If you hit a Griffin from behind, while he's shooting at your team's Direwolf, while your team's Direwolf is shooting at a Stalker.. you get a solo kill on that Griffin without any damage to yourself.

What mechs do you tend to focus your fire on? Do you have such a mech on your team? Then escort him and flank around.

Depends on what I drive. I've done lots of kills by going after stragglers since I have limited ammo but often I don't have the luxury of saving it for kills, not if I want to win the match (This apllies to the Yen-Lo Wang, in energy mechs it is another ballgame entirely).

I'm rank 2.
And have been playing solo. Truly solo, in pugs.
But yes, I do get help from others. The other pugs, cooridinate with VOIP in game, and game chat, move together, shoot together setup flanks etc.

With just a little help, and a nice attitude.
If I get rank 1 at the end of this tournament, some lucky soul (I've been taking screens of every game, and recording matches) is going to get a Gift Mech.

My advice, to people wanting to do these tournaments but doesn't want a set team is this.
Cooridinate with your fellow pugs. You don't have to synch drop, play only in group que or anything like that.

I've been doing this solely as a pug, to see if it was even possible and have been pleasantly surprised.

Stay good mannered, even tempered, help your team mates, shoot straight, don't face hump the target, give your team mates plenty of firing lanes, don't be afraid to go off to help a lance that needs help if you can get there in 30 seconds or less. One mech CAN make the difference.
Most importantly TALK to people, use that push to talk.
Second most important is be relaxed while playing. If you get an epic hero match, don't try to duplicate it. It'll just push you into making mistakes. Take breaks, go out for a run, hit the weights, whatever you do, get up and away from the computer for a while.

Exactly, that's whay I've been trying to say to these people.

It's the attitude that wins you the tournament.

50% skill. 50% attitude.

Play it after the tournament when everyone is back in their big alpha mechs. I'm enjoying the TDK right now but I know it won't last.

Heh. I'm in my X-5 and the number of streak crows and big aplha mechs out there is still plenty to ruin my day when I'm not paying attention..

I still see mostly the big alpha mechs running around.
This tournament hasn't changed much. The only difference, is I'm in my Fang instead of a TDR. And still getting the job done.
This tournament, has broken a lot of bad habits I hadn't realized I'd gotten into.

Unfortunately this is so true. I have seen some of the 50 top dogs of several categories. Some were really good and deserve their position. It was also fun to recognize some names from those lists because PuGgin hasn't felt so anonymous.

Then there are some "top dogs"...well...where you simply shake your head and it is glaring obvious that there is some kind of manipulations going on. In one case I was shot out my mech early and thought: "cool, now you can learn something from that dude by watching him play" and spectated from his cockpit. I was flabbergasted how bad a shot he was and how he played. And that guy has a score of 3000+.
