This is, in some ways a question to PGI, aswell as to point it out to people / poll opinions.

For a LONG time, we didn't get the Royal variants, they were a no-go.
We now have 5 this isn't on the cards anymore.

Yes, for the most part, we can make the Royal Variants using other variants, but it'd be nice to have them in game as an option.

For the ingame mechs, these are the Royal Variants:
20T - Locust - LCT-1Vb (XL160, ES, FF, DHS, 1ML, 2SPL, 2MPL)

50T - Crab - CRB-27b*
55T - Griffin - GRF-2N*
55T - Kintaro - KTO-19b (XL275, FF, 2ML, 2SRM6, 1LRM15, 1NARC)
55T - Shadow Hawk - SHD-2Hb (STD275, ES, FF, DHS, 2ML, 1LBX10, 2SSRM2)
55T - Wolverine - WVR-7H (STD275, ES, FF, DHS, 1MPL, 1UAC5, 1SRM6+AIV, 5JJ)

65T - Thunderbolt - TDR-5Sb (STD260, ES, DHS, 1SL, 2SPL, 3ML, 1ERPPC, 1SSRM2, 1LRM15+AIV)
75T - Black Knight - BL-6b-KNT*

85T - BattleMaster - BLR-1Gb (STD340, ES, DHS, 4ML, 1LPL, 2ERPPC)
- BLR-1Gbc (STD340, ES, DHS, 4ML, 1LPL, 2ERPPC. Command Console)
85T - Stalker - STK-3Fb (STD255, DHS, 4ML, 2ERLL, 2LRM15+AIV, 1GECM)
90T - Highlander - HGN-732b*
100T - King Crab - KGC-000b*
*Variants in game

This means there's 7-8 Variants that could comfortably be released, for little to no effort, which would mostly cause no balance issues at all.
- There is one mech here that could be an issue, which is the Stalker 3Fb, as it carries ECM, 6E, 2M points. The rest are fine though.

So the question would be - why not?

The variants used by the old Terran Hegemony's "Royal" units. They tended to mount advanced technology in quantities not normally used by the other 5 member states of the Star League. Most of these mechs either did not survive the Succession Wars or left with the Star League Regular Army when General Kerensky took them into self-imposed exile (their descendants would return in 300 years as the Clans).

Star League Defense Force

Lost variants of older mechs specifically used by that organization's "Royal Unit". Most of them were taken by Kerensky's Exodus, you know the people who become the Clans. Some were brought back into production after the schematics were found in various memory cores, but for the most part they were gone and unable to be reproduced.

In lore, a Royal Variants were used exclusively by the Star League Defence Force's Royal units.

To quote Sarna:
  • Royal regiments were nearly identical to Regular regiments, with two exceptions. Royal regiments consisted entirely of soldiers of Terran Hegemony birth. Further, Royal regiments were the initial beneficiaries of BattleTechnology innovations - all Royal regiments were equipped with the ultimate in weapons development. Royal regiments served as the backbone of which each military region's force was built around.[10]
Essentially, the 'best of the best', with a bit of classism thrown in.
Many were locked away or left with Kerensky in the Exodus, so weren't readily available (very rare, if any left at all outside of Clan Space), and almost all used 'Lostech' to some degree.

And in that, it did make sense to not have them lore wise.
But, now we do have several of them, which opens up the rest.

You know, I'm surprised HG hasn't gone ape on Sarna for using the Macross derived images.

Some of these variants popped up again when Wolf's Dragoons rolled in for their recon mission to see the state of the Inner Sphere. It'd be interesting to see some of these get proper implementation.

lol, for as long as Sarna has been around, you would think that /someone/ at HG would have to know about it, and if they /don't/ then they're even bigger idiots than I thought.
