Now I know most know that I no longer play this game however that does not mean forever. So in prep for a return some day including other such games as the new starwars battle front. DooM and also too run MWLL at max graphics. The resolution I play at and don't plan on going any higher is at 1080p.

Current card is the GTX 660 OC and now I am looking for a upgrade.

Along with my I7 4770k the game is still running in low FPS and I can not understand it. MWLL runs just fine.

So after checking through cards and peoples opinions and of course my budget I am stuck with two choices.

A GTX 960 OC brand

or a R9 280x OC brand.

From what I see the R9 has a performance increase and high Vram for future games. the only thing I am worried about is its out dated tech going back too 2013 as the GTX 960 is 2015.

PSU is 650 watts so it can handle both cards. So if any one can help me make a choice please leave your comments below. All help is appreciated.

What are you running your CPU at? MWO is CPU hungry with the sweet spot being around 4.2ghz

I run a i5-3570K at 4.4ghz, ATI HD 7950 3gigs/oc, 8gigs ram on Asrock Z77 Pro3 w/Corsair GS800 PSU

Below is for the normal queue. CW queue drops FPS a few notches.

Run the game at med/high settings and FPS locked at 68FPS. Unlocked FPS max was 100FPS with nothing going on last time I checked but the 40/50 FPS drops would give me a headache. Depending on action low drops recorded 49FPS, avg 57FPS.

The last time I dropped my CPU speed to baseline 3.4ghz to test, iirc max FPS dropped only a few points but min FPS dropped to around 31FPS, avg 46FPS but that was many moons ago.

You might want to wait for AMD to make their move with their new GPUs so you can evaluate pricing. Yes, the new cards will be expensive, but older cards prices will probably drop a bit. That might make the decision easier. Either way, just get whichever is faster when you want to spend your money.

^this advice brought to you for MWO

Depending on what feature levels other games will support, which may still be a year or years into the future before they are widely supported, you may want to get a GTX 960. I wouldn't recommend it if the 280X is significantly faster (I haven't looked at benchmarks lately). If it's nearly a wash performance-wise, then the 960 supporting the entire DX12 feature set may be a bonus. Hard to say for certain since that would be speculation with no evidence to determine anything.

My I7 4770 is sitting at 3.5 at the moment So I could just clock it up with out any issue I ain't wanting trouble with my I7 now Don't have the money too repair if any thing does go wrong. As far as I can see the R9 280x does have quiet a performance over take too the 960 mostly where you hit 1080 or higher then it shines. Also 128 bit bus was a little concerning showing the 384 the R9 has. But mwo for some reason just demands so much which it should not really I mean I run MWLL no problem and that game is really top notch even too this day. I guess its just this new Cry engine or the fact the game is not well optimized ?

edit: oh wait sorry its not the K version just normal 4770 I7 but it does have turbo mode enabled and can reach 3.9

The 960 has a smaller bus because it uses colour compression same as all of Maxwell meaning it can get twice the performance out of that bus.

Odd... so I sport an i7-3770K PSU, Gigabyte's GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 8gb GSkill, 1050w Corsair PSU, a decent ASUS Mobo, etc (7 total case fans + CPU liquid cooling... people say it's loud, I think it hums along lol). The GPU is factory OC'd, the CPU is not OC'd... I could but won't... and I am pulling 50-100 FPS in game, with drops as low as like 42 for heavy action. I'm kinda curious why your FPS takes such a huge hit...

I do have one question for you since you own a 660... does your GPU have issues with the display drivers crashing and recovering while in game forcing you to restart the game?

No my GTX 660 has never crashed too date. But I think its because your TI version blows the regular one away but a fare amount.

But sad news R9 280x is out of my price range in South Africa its very expensive. So the best I can do is a 960 the most powerful out there or something like a ASUS GTX 680 DirectCU II Top

They did think the GTX 980Ti might show up for $800, but whom else can we ask?

the GTX 680 is Good! if your PSU can handle it i'd say go for it!

GTX 680 is between the 960 & 970 (Just like the R9 280X), Nvidia Recommends a 550W PSU Minimum

I run a 7870 and get 60FPS maxed(no AA). A 960 or 285/380 should have no problems.

I'd say that either one will do just fine. This game is CPU hungry like hell and thus any "newer" card should do fine. The graphics of this game are from 2012-2013 anyway. It hasn't changed all that much.

I personally bought the R9 290 last fall with the aid of some calculations from 3dmark as the best price point for a new GPU. The current gen games were a bit laggy on the graphical side and needed an upgrade... Not in this game though. There might have been a slight performance upgrade in MWO, but I was good to go in this game before the upgrade too. I had two 6850's on board before.

I run the same card as you and have always had massive display driver problems. Finding an old driver from Invidia is quite helpful, but far from perfect.

@Kohrn there is no System u can have to run on max. with stable 60fps and higher.

Its just the game.

But if u looking for a new card I would say, wait for the release of the new AMD R9 3xx series.

I have tried so many options too try and get some good performance out of this game but nothing seems too change. All other games have large ammounts of performance increase when I upgrade various times except MWO. I have gone too just about every possible fix. Power options, hyper threading , various config tweaks, etc I am just coming too realize its the game but when I hear others with less powerful systems getting better performance then I just get confused.

It is discussions like this that make me continue to encourage PGI for the early adoption of DX12. The asynchronous graphics calls in DX12 will greatly increase video performance. This will not be an incremental increase in performance but a very large increase. But alas, DX12 PC hardware will be needed and since PGI wants to maintain a large user community to keep the money rolling in, the adoption of DX12 will be a very slow process.

Such is the disadvantage of a Free To Play game business model. Embracing new technology in this game is a business risk that needs to be considered in the light of how this new technology will increase or decrease the PGI revenue stream.
